opener and handle. and it particularlyrelates to a combination can opener and. handle usefut for the; dispensing and consumption of fruit juices and liquid beverages.

It is: among the objects of the present invention to provide a convenient, readily man'ufac compact, easily manipulated combined handle and can openw which may be readily handled: by the housewife or other member of the household: to open. cansof' fruit juices and carbonated beverages: such as beer; and at the same time provide ahan'dle, enabling ready disensing or consui ipti'on thereof;

It is another object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive, relatively small, light weight implement capable of mass production for utilization and opening and carrying beverage and fruit juice cans, which may be distributed as a-premiumor in connection with or to enhance thesales-of varioustypes offrui-t juices a'nd liquidbeverages;

Still further objects and advantages will ap-'- pear in the more detailed description setforth above, it being understood, however, that this moredeta'iled" description-isgiizen by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since" various.- changes. therein: may be made by thosev skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.

In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most suitable, according toone embodiment of the present invention; to provide an approximately- U-chaped, relativelystifimejtal bar which may be readily stamped-out in one or two; opera".- tions and formed intothedesirecfshape and'isize', which will enable ready application to ando'perring of a can and at the same time which will enable ready attachment to such can to be used as a pouring handle or as a handle to enable ready manipulation of the can or drinking of the beverage therefrom.

In the preferred form, the can opening top is provided with a double claw pivotally connected to the can B, which supports the opener in the pivotal movement thereof for opening the top of the can.

At the same time the can opening portion is provided with a down-turned abutment to ride against the bead at the top of the can when the opener is used as a handle. As shown in Figs. 1 to 4; the can opener takes the approximate form of at! with a base Wand an upper leg H and a bottom leg l2.

The upper leg H terminates in a pointed element i3 having a cutting nose I4 with the sharp edges l5 which will cut into the top 56 of the can A, leaving the opening ll, the edges of which will be turned downwardly so as to enable direct drinking from the can A if desired.

The turned-down portion of the top l6 of the can A is indicated at l8.

The upper leg H has the down-turned pivotal claws or hook members l9, which may be stamped out of the same metal and turned downwardly, leaving the shoulders, as for example indicated at 20 in Fig. 3. These claws or hooks have an open space as indicated at 2! and have a contact edge as indicated at 22 to abut the side wall 23 of the can in the position of Fig. 2 and 3 to swing pivotally upon the upper bead 2.4, as indicated in Fig. 1.

It will be noted that the base I is inclined somewhat at an angle of 90 to the upper leg ll whereas the lower leg I2 is at an inclination of between 120 to 150 to the base l0, which lends itself to a proper handle construction, as indicated in Fig. 2.

At the end of the leg I2 is the inturned portion 25, which is designed to snap under the lower bead 26 at the bottom 21 of the can A.

Although the device B is made of relatively stiff stock, the resiliency between the legs II and I2 in respect to the base In will permit the upturned leg 25 to snap under the bead 26 and hold the handle in firmly in position.

The leg I 2 may also be provided with a conventional cap opener having the opening 28, the camming face 29 and the nose 3!] to fit under and lift the cap. v

' Opposed to the upturned leg 25 is the downturned stamped-out portion 3| which will abut the upper bead 24, as indicated in Fig. 2, when the handle B is serving to carry the can or enable pouring or drinking of fluid therefrom. 'The entire structure of Figs. 1 to 4,. may be readily stamped out of metal in one piece and may be inexpensively formed and manufactured, so that it may be distributed as a premium or advertising or sold at relatively low cost.

While there has been described herein a preferred form of the invention, it should be understood that the same may be altered in details and in relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.

Having now particularly described and acertained the nature of the present invention, and in what manner the same is to be preformed, what is claimed is:

1. A combined can opener and handle for beaded cans comprising a U-shaped member having a base, an upper leg and a lower leg, the upper leg having a forwardly-extending triangular shaped opening end section, said upperleg having a central claw member extending rearwardly and two side claw members extending forwardly to engage the can and the lower leg having means to engage the bottom bead of the can to enable the opener to serve as a handle, and said upper leg having an angle of substantially to the base of the U-shaped member and said lower leg having an angle of substantially between and to the base.

2. A combined can opener and handle for beaded cans comprising a U-shaped member having a base, an upper leg and a lower leg, the upper leg having a forwardly extending triangular shaped opening end section, said upper leg having a central claw member extending rear'-' wardly and two side claw members extending forwardly to engage the can and the lower leg having means to engage the bottom bead of the can to enable the opener to serve as a handle, the last-mentioned means including a lip to latch under the bottom bead of the can, and said upper leg having an angle of substantially 90 to the base of the U,-shaped member and said lower leg having an angle of substantially between 120 and 150 to the base.

3. A combined can opener and handle for beaded cans comprising a U-shaped member having a base, an upper leg and a lower leg, the upper leg having a forward-extending triangular shaped opening end section and the lower leg having means to engage the bottom bead of the can toenable the opener to serve as a handle, the last-mentioned means including a lip to latch under the bottom bead of the can and the upper leg having-a lug to latch inside of the upper bead, and; said upper leg having an angle of substantiallyEBOf to the:base of the U-shaped memher and aid jlower leg having an angle of subetween 120 and-150 to the base.
