The side flanges I4 and I5 thereon are of a uniform width equal to substantially one-half the distance between the side walls of the container. However, it is obvious that the dividing partition, article supporting and reinforcing insert of this invention is readily adapted for use in containers of vother than rectangular shape. For instance, in a trapezoidal shaped container, the flaps I4 and the end extension flaps I5 could be varied in dimension to properly nt within the modified container. It is also possible that the dividing structure might bedisposed within a rectangular container to provide a lreinforcing and dividing insert in which the two-ply. dividing portion was angularly disposed to the side walls of the container rather than disposed parallel as in the preferred embodiment described or possibly it might be desirable to position the dividing portion nearer one wall than another. In these instances, the dimensions of the flaps I4 and the end extension flaps I5 could be varied so as to orient the dividing portion of theinsert as desired. l
The dividing partition, article supporting and reinforcing insert shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be erected in any suitable manner. However, a preferred method is to fold'the end extensions I2 about the transversevscores II into natwise relation with the surface gof the dividing panel I. The naps i4 and the end extension flaps I5 arethen foldedV outwardly about the longitudinal scores I3 into a position at substantially right angles to the previously positioned dividing panel It and the flaps Id. Tape VI'I may be applied as shown in Fig. 2 so as to maintain the dividing and reinforcing insert A in the erected position. The tape I'I should substantially cover and overlap the joint formed by the juncture of the abutting end extensions I2 and the end extension flaps I5. If desired the dividing panelY IG and end extensions I2 may be stitched, glued or otherwise secured together. However, it is apparent that the tape Il'may b e omitted if the reinforcing insert A is positioned within the container since the board tends to constantlyforce the components into proper position within the container.
The flaps I4 and the end extension flaps I5 are of sufficient strength to independently support Y the contents carried on the dividing panel IG and y end extensions l2'lwithout the support'of the container body section B. Thus in the preferred form, it is apparent that the dividing and reinforcing insert will firmly support the weight of at least one-half the contents of the.' carrier. feature is especially desirable when one-half of the contents of thevcontainer are removed. Thel with the sidewalls I9 and 2t and other flaps 22 which are preferably similarly formed and which said aps may be integral with the top wall I and bottom wall I8. Further, the container B has fold lines constituting hinge means at its four corners C, CI, C2 and C3.
It will be noted that at the juncture J, where the respective naps I4 and l5 at opposite sides of the two plies of the partition are folded, the adjacent edges at the folds of these naps are in substantial abutting relationship.
The scores or fold lines I3 in the insert and the fold lines constituting hinge means at C, CI, C2 and C3 at the corners of the container B provide for automatic erection of the container and the insert therein as shown in Fig. 2 and, likewise, an automatic collapsing along the score and fold lines to a substantially at condition with the insert, of course, within the container. 'I'he erection and collapsing of the container does not require any manual manipulation of the insert whatever and simply by maintaining one of the walls stationary and simultaneously swinging the remaining walls about the score and fold lines of the insert and container respectively, these walls and the two-ply partition and the respective flaps thereon are collapsed to a positionV in substantial parallel relation to each other.
It is to be understood that the embodiments described herein are illustrative and not restrictive and it is also to be understood that the invention is susceptible to be embodied in other similar or equivalent forms coming equally within the scope of the claims next appearing.
` What I claim is:
l. vA paperboard vcontainer having two upstanding side walls, horizontal top and bottom walls connecting the side walls, one end of the container havingv a vertical wall constituting openable closure means thereat, and apaperboard container reinforcing and partitioning insert therein, the insert having an article supporting partition member consisting of upper and lower Unscored panels of substantially rigid material horizontally disposed within the container and each substantially coextensive with andin parallel spaced relation to the top and bottom walls and thus forming upper and lower article storing compartments within the container` the compartments being accessible from the opened end of the container for inserting articles on or removing same from the upper compartment on the partition member and thev lower compartment, a partition supporting and side wall reinforcing flap extending downwardly from each of the opposite side edges of the lower panel of the-partition member, a side wall reinforcing flap extending upwardly from each of the opposite side edges of the upper panel of the partition member, said naps being nx'ed against their adjacent side walls and the free end edges of lthe said flaps terminating adjacent the 'upper and lower inside corners of the container.
2. The container with the insert as defined in and by claim l, wherein said panels are portions of a folded one-piece blank.
3. The container with the insert as defined in `and by claim 1, wherein said partition member comprises a single one-piece blank having folded over end portions constituting one of said panels. 4. The containerwith the insert as donned in and by claim 1, wherein the said flaps are adhesively Xed to their adjacent side walls.
