JOI N C. BIRDSELL, OF VEST HENRIETTA, YORK.
MACHINE FOR BOLTING, AND CLEANING CLOVER-SEED.
Specification forming part; of Lettersliatent No, 26,409,, dated: December 13,, 18,59; Reissued November 12, 1867, No. 2,79;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN C. BIRDSELL, of West Henrietta, Monroe county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolting and CleaningCloVer-Seed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the machine exhibiting only the bolting and conveying process. Fig. 2, shows one end of the same. Fig. 3, is the opposite end of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, exhibits the bolts in two positions with a part of the frame of the machine detached.
The nature of my invention consists in giving to the twobolts, when the machine is in operation, an oblique, alternating motion, so that they will alternately raise and fall keeping at the same time always parallel to each other, for the purpose of more effectually separating the cups or bowls'containing the clover seed, from the straw, by giving it a dropping motion, while at the same time it is propelled to the rear of the machine. Also in providing an endless conveyer so arranged that it will convey the tailings which have not been effectually hulled back to be again submitted to the process of hulling, for the purpose of more thoroughly freeing it of its hulls, described represented and specified as follows.
As the present claims will only refer to the bolting and conveying operation therefore it is not necessary to exhibit the entire machine in the drawings, but only the several parts herein referred thereto.
A, A, represents the two bolts which are hung parallel to each other and are operated by means of connecting rods B, B which are attached to a crank shaft C the rod B being attached to crank D placed in the center of the shaft C and connecting about midway with the lower bolt A gives motion to the lower bolt. The rods B connecting with the cranks E E on each side of the machine but on the opposite side of the shaft C to crank D, thus giving a double crank motion to the connecting rods B and B, these rods B pass along each side of the machine and are attached to the sides of the upper bolt A.
F F are inclined guides which pass through the cross ties a; a on each side of the bolts and upon which the bolts rest and are guided in their motions.
G are arms, one of which is shown in the drawing which are pivoted respectively to the frame of the machine and to the upper bolt. A.
H H are rods which connect the lower bolt with the frame of the machine and upon which the end of the lower bolt rests. this arrangement of cranks, connecting rods, and guides, the bolts, as they are pushed forward, will rise and carry the straw with them, and as they recede and drop, they slide from under the straw leaving it very nearly. at the point to which it was carried. Thus the straw after it has passed through the threshing cylinder is gradually moved backward and finally ejected at the rear of the machine, this dropping motion at the same time serving to effectively separate the clover cups or bowls which contain the seed from the straw.
The clover cups or bowls which contain the seed and also the tailings after they have passed through the several operations of bolting as above described and hulling and fanning, it is necessary to pass those which have not been effectually hulled again through the operation of hulling and fanning in order to render their separation perfeet. In order to accomplish this operation with greater facility I arrange upon the side of my machine a trough I provided with conveyers J attached to endless bands K this trough I receives the tailings &c from the sieves through a spout into the conveyer I from whence they are taken by the conveyer J and carried up to any convenient place of deposit to be re-hulled and refanned.
The conveyers are operated by a pulley N and band P which is attached to the threshing cylinder shaft or it may be carried over any other convenient pulley to give it motion. This arrangement dispenses with the time and labor of handling the clover tailings and carrying it from one end of the machlne to the other.
I do not claim giving to the bolts a vibratory motion as is common to sieves of clover hullers now in constant use, nor do I claim hanging them on cranks as patented by Mr. Pierpoint in wheat machines but What I claim as my invention, is
1. Operating the bolts A, A, so as to impart to them an oblique alternately rising and falling motion by means of double cranks D, E guide rods F F arms G H and connecting rods B B or their equivalents, in 5 the manner and for the purposes set forthit being understood that I claim the above only when applied to bolting clover seed.
2. I claim arranging a trough I provided with endless eonveyers J as set forth for the purpose of returning the unhulled seed or 10 tailmgs to be again submitted to the operation of hulling as herein above described. JOHN C. BIRDSELL. Witnesses:
