Description
May 26, 1953 T. FAZIO 2,639,710
COLOSTOMY APPLIANCE WITH A REMOVABLE ADAPTER DEVICE Filed April 24. 1951 IN V EN TOR. f/wafiaha W Patented May 26, 1953 UITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE COLOSTOMY APPLIANCE WITH A REMOV ABLE ADAPTER DEVICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a colostomy appliance with a removable adapter device.
Reference is made to my co-pending, patent application, Serial No. 151,386, filing date November 30, 1950, and which is now abandoned.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved, colostomy appliance having an improved connector member that is attached to the usual body attaching member or directly to the body.
Another object is to provide an adapter device that enables a Waste receiving container to be readily attached to, and detached from, said connector number, and yet the attachment is so secure that odors from the waste matter cannot escape while my appliance is in use on the body.
A further object is to provide such an adapter device that can readily be separated from said waste container without making any contact with the waste material therein, so the part of the adapter device may be used again and do not require cleansing after each use.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings nor to the particular between said neck It and said opening [6. Said parts described in the specification; but am en- 1 titled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my colostomy appliance in position of use, and Figure '2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are top plan views of the male coupling, retaining member, and female coupling respectively.
As illustrated, my appliance includes a connector member l2 that has a flange 14 which provides a flat attaching surface, and having a central opening 16 extending therethrough. Usually a cloth member with a hole in the center, and With adhesive on both surfaces, serves to attach said connector member [2 to the body with the hole over the ileostomy or other body opening. However, said connector member 12 could be applied directly to the users body.
A neck 18, preferably integral with said flange neck It has an opening or hole 21] therein that widens or flares outwardly, following the inner conformation or surface 22 of said neck, which is somewhat convex, while the outer surface 24 is straight, flaring diagonally outward away from said flange it.
An adapter device 26 consisting of three parts, which may be made of plastic, enables the user to quickly attach to said connector member I2,
: and to separate from, a disposable waste container or bag B. Said device 26 includes a male coupling 28 exteriorly screw-threaded as at 30. Its inner surface is smooth and preferably tapers inwardly towards said flange l4 when in position of use. It is placed in position of use by forcing it over said connector neck I8 and fits snugly around the latter and is in contact with said flange M.
A female coupling 32 is interiorly screw- .1 threaded as at 34 whereby screw-threaded connection with said male coupling 28 can be made when my appliance is in use. At its outer extremity, in position of use, said female coupling 32 has an inwardly extending flange 36.
A retaining member 38, shown in said Figure 3, is covered by the open end portion of said bag 13, which extends through said retaining member 38 and above and outside it and downwardly a short distance. This retaining member is in the form of a flat ring of a size to fit within said coupling 32 and bear against said flange 36 which retains it. When said male coupling 28 is screwed well into said female coupling 32 it bears against a portion of said bag at the open end, thus holding the bag tightly against said coupling flange 36.
Ordinarily said connector member 12 remains attached to the body with the bag B held in position of use by my adapter device. When it is desired to remove said bag B said female coupling 32 is unscrewed from said male coupling 28, and said bag, a portion of which covers said retainer member 38, is drawn through said female coupling. The upper portion of said bag B is 'then separated from said retainer member 38 and may be disposed of, as in a toilet bowl, or one of the type for repeated use may be cleansed and again attached to said connector member l2 by means of said adapter device, as above explained.
The opening in said male coupling 28 is preferably of lesser diameter than the diameter of said connector neck l8 where it joins said flange [4, hence when said coupling 28 is forced over said neck l8, it constricts or distorts said connector member. Since the latter is made of rubber or other flexible material this draws the flange inner portion adjacent said opening [6, and the neck portion adjacent thereto, closer to the ileostomy or body opening, which is desirable as it makes a tighter connection. The flange outer portion is drawn in the opposite direction, or away from said body, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of said drawings. 1
