1 Claim.
This invention relates to chamber closures and more particularly to closures for chambers subjected to high pressure. In such cases the chamber is subject to expansion and distortion which, if an ordinary plug is employed, will cause the threads to strip, resulting in a blow-out of the plug.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a plug of the character described which is simple in construction, effective in its action, economical to manufacture and capable of ready installation and replacement.
Further objects will appear from the detail description in which will be set forth an illustrative embodiment of this invention. It is to be understood, however, that this invention is susceptible to various embodiments within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an end elevation of the chamber with the closure embodying this invention installed therein; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Generally stated and in accordance with an illustrative embodiment of this invention a plug is provided which is designed to fit the chamber and a sectional retaining ring is designed to removably fit an annular recess provided in the chamber and which ring is designed for abutment by the plug. The ring is composed of a series of sections constructed for relative radial placement and removal within the recess, and retaining means may be provided adjacent one of the ring sections designed to retain the sections in the recess. The plug may be provided with an annular packing and a cover may be provided for placement against the chamber and having means for clamping the ring in order to retain it.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, 1 designates a chamber of any suitable construction designed to receive a liquid under high pressure. This chamber is provided with a seat 2 adapted to receive the plug 3 designed to fit the seat, but loosely enough so that the plug can be placed and removed. In order to provide for any additional seal a packing 4 in the form of a ring of rubber is provided, this ring having inside and outside diameters so that it will be compressed when the plug is placed in position. The retaining ring comprising a series of sections, in this case 5, 6, l and 8, is arranged to be received in the chamber. This ring is arranged for removal and replacement in the seat and for that purpose the special section 8 is provided which may be moved radially inwardly and outwardly between the sections 6 and i. This permits the other sections 5, 6 and I to be removed or replaced. In order to retain the sectional retaining ring in place a series of tapered screws I ll, each provided with a head of angular form, is provided with threads received by threaded half-sockets formed in the adjacent ends of the retainin ring sections as shown in Figure 3. These screws thus provide means for retaining the sectional ring in position in the recess 8. A retainer in the form of a plate ii is provided to retain or clamp the plug against the ring; for this purpose the plate is perforated to receive screws l2, threaded into sockets in the plug 3. i
It will thus be seen that the chamber closure provides effective means for closing the chamber. The plug may be placed in position by inserting the same in the chamber followed by placement of the ring sections in the annular groove and the plug is finally clamped against the ring by placing the end plate in position and clamping the plu against the ring. The plug may be removed by reversing the operations just described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A closure for a chamber provided with an annular recess, comprising a plug designed to fit the chamber, said plu being provided with a circumferential recess intermediate its inner and outer faces, a packing ring seated within. said recess and compressed against the inner surface of said chamber, a ring designed to fit the annular chamber recess for abutment by said plug and composed of a series of sections constructed for relative radial placement within the recess, retaining means positioned between adjacent ring sections and designed to retain said sections in the recess, and a plate, beyond said ring with respect to said plug, provided with means for retaining the said plug against the said ring.
