This invention relates to a hanger bar havin anchoring studs projectable into penetrating engagement with adiacent supports by a force induced by an explosive charge detonation.
An object of this invention is to provide a hanger bar having anchoring studs projectable in response to force induced' by an explosive charge detonation, which is particularly adapted for quick and easy attachment between a pair of spaced supports.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hanger bar having anchoring studs projectable in response to force induced by an explosion charge detonation, which is particularly adapted for use in rewiring buildings, wherein it is essential to provide a firm, durable and permanent mounting for electrical juncticn boxes and the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hanger bar having anchorirg studs projectable in response to force induced by an explosive charge detonation which cannot be accidentally discharged and is safe and simple to use.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hanger bar having anchoring studs projectable in response to force induced by an explosive charge detonation which is provided with a detachable reinforcingsleeve to minimize the possibility of the hollow tube rupturing when the charge contained therein is exploded.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hanger bar having anchoring studs projectable in response to force induced by an explosive charge detonation for attachment between a pair of spaced supports, which is relatively simple in structure and cheap to manu- .facture.
The above and still further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a hanger bar constructed according to the present invention, shown supported between a pair of spaced supports;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the hanger bar of the present invention shown assembled with the reinforcing sleeve;
Figure 3 is an end elevational View of the assembly of the hanger bar and reinforcing sleeve taken from the left of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Figure 2,
Referring now more particularly to. the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several Views to designate like parts, there is shown the hanger bar lo which is adapted to be attached between a pair of spaced supports I l and I2, such as joists or trusses in a building.
The hanger bar includes an open-ended, hollow tube !5 which is provided with an axial firing bore [6.
Disposed within the tube !5 intermediate the ends thereof is an explosive charge l'l which substantially bridges the axial bore [6 and is supported therein.
Arranged in back-to-back, spaced relation with respect to each other are a pair of projectile-like studs l8 and |9 which are normally arranged in the medial portion of the tube on opposite sides of the charge l'l and spaced therefrom. Each of the studs |8 and !9 includes a cylindrical body 20 shaped complementary to and snug-ly fitting in the firing bore !6, and a support-engaging prong 2I projecting from the outer end thereof and facing toward the adjacent open end of the tube !5. Each of the studs 18 and |9 is adapted to be driven toward the adjacent open end of the tube |5 and into engagement with the adjacent support in response to a detonation of the charge Interposed between the studs !8 and |9 and. the charge I'l are the waddings 22 and 23 for preventing the gases released from the detonation of the charge l'l from by-passing the studs !8 and I 9.
An electrically-actuable detonating structure is carried by the tube for exploding the charge IT, to thereby cause the prongs to be driven into the supports ll and !2. As clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the detonating structure includes a firng pin 25 which is supported in a transversely extending bore 26 provided in the tube II 5. One end of the firing pin 25 extends into the charge IT, while the other end thereof terminates exteriorly of the tube |5 and has seoured thereto wires 21 which 'are adapted to be selectively connected to asource of electrical energy to detonate the charge l'l. i
Circumposed about the tube I 5 intermediate the ends thereof is a reinforcing sleeve 30 which has its respective ends projecting substantial distances beyond the outer ends of the cylindrical stud bodies, and which is detachably Secured to the tube l5 to prevent the latter from rupturing when the explosive charge H is exploded. As clearly shown in Figures 2, ,3 and 5, the reinforcing sleeve includes a pair of sleeve sections 31 and 32 arranged in face-to-face relation with respect to each other.` The sleeve sections 31 and 32 are longitudinally cut to form complementary intermeshing hinges 33 and 34 and 35 along the respective pairs of facing side edges thereof. In-
and 32 is a hinge pin 36 which` niounts the sleeve sections 3| and 32 for pivotal movement relative to each other. Traversing the hinge leaves of the other pair of facing side edges of the sleeve sections 3! and 32 .isa removable pin 31 for detachably securing the'sleeve sections together. As clearly shown in Figure 4, the inner periphery of the sleeve 30 is provided with a seat 38 for receivin the projecting end of the firing pin 26. The sleeve section :i is further provided with an aperture si) having one end terminatin in the outer periphery thereoi and having the other end terminating in the seat 38 for the extension thereth'ough of the wires 22'! of the detonating structure.
As illustrated in phantom in Figure 1, any piece of electrical equipment, such -as an outlet box 5%, may be dependingly supported from the tube !5 after the removal of the reinforcing sleeve 38.
In actual use, the reinforcingsleeve is circumposed about the tube With the wires 21 projecting exteriorly thereof. Upon attaching the wires to a source of electrical energy, the charge H -is exploded, whereupon the prongs 2! of the projectile-like studs !8 and !8 are driven into the supports i I and iz and permanently and rmly secure the hanger bar 'Ic 'to the supports. The hanger bar of the present invention can be mounted between joists or trusses in buildings which are being rewired, where conventional hanger bars -are not practi-cal. The hanger bar Hi facilitates a solid mounting which cannot be obtained bymounting boxes or hangers on lath, plasterboard, masonite, and similar supports.
Although only one embodiment of the hanger bar 'of the present invention has been described, it is readly apparent that numerous modificationscan-be made without departing from -the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A hanger bar for attachment between a pair of spaced supports cotnprising an open-ended hollow tube adapted to be extended between said supports, an explosive charge disposed within said tube intermediate the ends thereof and supported therebetween, a -pair of projectile-like studs normally arranged in back-to-back spaced reiation with-respect to each other in the medial portion of said tube on opposite sides of said charge, said studs ;including cylindrical bodies and prongs on the outerends of the bodies. each of said studs being driven from its normal position -towadthe adjacent open end of said tube for engagement of the prongs with the adjacent support in response to the detonation of. said chargegelectrically ;actuable detonating means carried by said tube -for exploding said charge, anda reinforcing sleeve circumposed about said tube intermediate the -ends thereof and detachably secured thereto, said sleeve having its opposite ends extending a substantial distance beyond the outer ends of-said bodies in the normal position eithestuds.
2. A hanger bar for attachment between a pair of spaced supports comprising an open-ended hollow tube adapted to beextended 'between said supports, an explosive charge disposed within saidtubeintermediate the ends thereof and supported therebetween, :a pair of projectile-lil e studs-normally a-rranged in; back-to-back spaced relation-withrespect toreach other in the medial portion of ..said 'tube on opposite, sides of said charge, said .studsv including cylindrical bodies* tion toward the adjacent open end of said tube for engagement of the prongs with the adjacent support in response to the detonation of said -charge, electrially. actuable ;detonating means carried by said tube for explcding'. saidcharge, and a reinforcing sleeve circumposed about said tube intermediate the ends thereof and detachably secured thereto, said sleeve having its opposite ends extending a substantial distance beyond theouter ends of said bodies in the normal position of the studs, said detonating means including Wires adapted to be electrically connected to a source of electrical energy, and a firing pin electrically connected to said wires and having one end extending through a bore provided in said tube and having the other end received in a seat -provided in the inner periphery of said reinforcing sleeve, there being an aperture provided in said reinforcing sleeve having one end terminating in the other periphery thereof and having the other end terminating in said seat for the extension therethrough of said wires.
3. A hanger bar for attachment between a pair of spaced supports comprising an open-ended hollow tube adapted to be extended between said supports, an explosive charge disposecl within tube intermediate the ends thereof and supported therebetween, a pair of projectile-like studs normally arranged in back-to-back spaced relation with respect to each other in the -mediai portion of said tube on opposite sides of said charge, said studs including cylindrical bodies and prongs on the outer ends of the bodies, each of said studs being driven 'from its normal position toward 'the adjacent open end of said tube for engagement of the prongs with the adjacent support in response to the detonation of said charge, electrically actuable detonating means carried by said tube for exploding said charge, and areinforcing sleeve circumposed about said tube intermediate the ,ends thereof` and detashablyisecured thereto, said sleeve having its opposite ends extending a substantial distance beyondthe outer ends of saidbodies in the `normal position ofthe studs, said reinforcing sleeve com prising a pair of sleeve sections arranged iri-,faceto-face relation-with respect to each other, said sleeve sections being longitudinally and transversely cuttoiorm complementary intermeshing hinge ,leaves-along therespeetive pairs of facing side edges thereof,-means'interconnected between the hinge leaves of one pair of facing side edges of said sleeve .sections for mounting said sleeve sections for pivotal movement relative to each other, and aremovable pin traversing the hinge leaves of the other pair of --facing side edges of said sleeve sections for detachably securing said sleeve sections together.
