" ApplicationNovember 9, 195o, serial No. 194,816
Y l -1' The present invention relates to adjustable screen door grilles, and more particularly to lmeans for mounting indiciav bearing panels on such grilles. Y
There are in `general use, at the present time,
adjustable strap metal grilles for protecting the fly screen of screen doors. In many of their conventional forms, such grilles are composed of flat metal strips criss-crossed and pivotally yinterengaged, so that the outer dimensions of the grille will fit sc reen openings of various sizes. As a result of adjusting such grilles laterally, the shape and size of the grilles interstices are naturally varied. In other words, the relationship of the metal strips is altered.
' When it is desirable to mount an indicia bearing panel or plaque upon such grilles, a problem is presented in providing attaching means which will accommodate the variable relationship of vthe strips. Such plaques may well bear initial, name, or sheet numeral indicia.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a plaque or panel, having a mounting or clamping mechanism which will successfully function in connection with various door grilles, even though the grilles differ in the sizes and shapes of their interstices.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plaque andv holding means therefor, which is easy to adjust and simple to install.
A further object is to provide a device of this class which is comparatively cheap to manufacture.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying two sheets of drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the device of the present invention operatively installed upon a conventional screen door grille, the grille being shown in dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view, partly broken away, and showing the device operatively installed on a different type of screen door grille. which grille is also shown in dotted lines;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and,
Figure 5 is a front elevational view of the device operatively installed on an adjustable screen door grille.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in those'gures of the drawings in which they occur.
3 Claims. (Cl. lll-125)V 1 In the drawings: I y. l, j
The reference numerall indicates a conventional screen door lframe describing a rectangular central opening in which isoperatively mounted a' conventional screen door grille 2 of the scroll type. The scroll type grille 2 isl formed ofa plurality of spaced strips of metal which are at placesk spacedly disposed with relation to each other. Two of such strips are indicated by the reference numerals 3 and 4. Such grilles are commonly known as adjustable grilles, because the scroll-like strips may be selectively spread apart to accommodate door openings of various widths. The device of the present invention is designed to be mounted between two spacedgrille strips such asv the strips 3 and di.
In dotted linesin Fig. 2 isshown one square or opening 5 of a different type of conventional screen door grille. In this type of grille, the opening 5 is bounded by'four strips 1, ,8, 9 and Il). Square or diamond shaped openings are common to lconventional screen door grilles commonly known as pivotally adjustable grilles. since their strips are pivotally connected together 'at points of intersection with each other, so that the grille may be pulled, out laterally to accommodate wide door openings, or may be ccmpressed laterally to conform to narrow door openings. The device of` the present invention is designed to be mounted within any of the grille openings or spaces, of-any conventional screen door grille made of spaced strips.
In its preferred embodiment, the device of the presentinvention, per se, consists substantially of cup-shaped housing 20, having a flat rear surface or bottom plate 2l, with an integral perpendicular side wall 22 surrounding its edges.
At two radially spaced or opposite positions, the side Wall 22 is provided with elongated through openings or slots 23, which lie adjacent and parallel to the bottom plate 2l. Each of the slots receives a straight dat clamping arm 25, having an elongated straight slot 26 cut therethrough. The outer end of each clamping arm 25 is provided with a perpendicularly bent hook 24 having an inturned lip 2l at its free end.
A wood-screw or stud 28 passes through the housing bottom 2 l, and extends through the elongated slot 26 in each one of the clamping arms 25.
The interior space in the housing 22 is substantially lled by a solid body 29 of wood or other material into which the screws or studs 28 may be threadedly engaged.
When thus engaged in the body 29, each stud acts as a pivot pin for one of the clamping arms 3 25, and by tightening the studs with a screwdriver, the clamping arms may be impinged between the inner surfaces of the body 29 and the bottom plate 2| of the housing 20. In this manner, the clamping arms 25 may be rigidly xed or anchored in various selective positions with relation to the housing and with relation to each other. It is pointed out that the hooked end of each arm may be swung in an arcuate path with one of the studs 28 acting as a pivot pin, and that the arm may also be selectively moved lon.-
gitudinally inward and outward with relation to the housing.
The arms 25 are therefore each adjustable in four directions, and may be positively anchored in the housing in any of such adjustable positions. It is therefore possible to engage the hook 26 of either arm over one of the grille strips, and after such engagement, the arm may be positively anchored by tightening the stud 28. The anchoring arrangement of the arms is therefore such that device may be mounted between spaced grille strips having various relationship to each other.
As stated hereinabove, the round housing with its annular side wall 22 is only the preferred form of the housing, and the housing could well be made square, rectangular, or in any other polygonal exterior conguration, as desired.
In Fig, 2, a portion of the housing plate 2i is shown partly broken away to clearly expose one of the clamping arms 25. In this View, the right hand arm 25 is shown in solid lines as being clampingly engaged over the grille strip 9. The same clamp arm may be engaged over the grille strip ID instead, if desired. This later engagement is illustrated in dotted lines in said Fig. 2.
The front or outer face of the body 29 may be provided with any type of indicia or decorative insignia. In the present instance, the indicia is shown as being the letter M. The indicia may be attached to the body 29 in any conventional manner, such as tacking, screwing or cementing.
Obviously the invention is susceptible to some change or alteration without defeating its practicability, and I therefore do not wish to be conned to the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings and described herein, further than I am limited by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a door grille formed of metal strips with interstices therebetween. oi"
a decorative panel adapted for mounting within one of said interstices, and including: a flat panel body; a pair of strip grasping arms; means for pivotally and slidably mounting the arms on the body in substantial parallel relation to the plane of the grille, said arms when mounted having portions which project in different directions beyond diierent edges of the body; a strip engaging hook carried by the projecting portion of each arm; and means for anchoring the arms to the body in various positions of adjustability.
' 2. The combination with a door grille formed of metal strips with interstices therebetween, of a decorative panel adapted for mounting within one of said interstices, and including: a sheet metal housing having one substantially nat wall and a peripheral edge wall lying perpendicular to the flat wall; a flat body substantially filling the housing, and formed of a material to which objects may be nailed; a pair of strap-metal clamping arms; means for pivotally and slidably mounting the arms in said housing so that end portions thereof project in different directions beyond the housing edge; means for selectively anchoring the arms in various positions of adjustability with relation to the housing; anda hook carried by each arm for clampingly engaging different ones of the grille forming strips.
3. The combination with a door grille formed of metal strips with interstices therebetween of a decorative panel adapted for mounting within one of said interstices, and including: a sheet metal housing having one substantially flat wall and a peripheral edge wall lying perpendicular to the fiat wall; a pair of clamping arms carried by the housing and projecting in diierent directions beyond said edge wall, said arms adjustably movable in at least four directions along a plane lying parallel to the plane of said grille; means for anchoring the arms in selected positions with relation to the housing; and a hook carried by each arm for clampingly engaging a grille forming strip.
