UNITE STATES ATENT OFFICE,
CHRISTIAN SCHMIDT, OF MIAMISBURG, OHIO, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO FERDNAND SWARTZTRAUBER, OF SAME PLACE.
PUMP-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,595, dated August 29, 1882.
' Application filed April 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SCHMIDT, of Miamisburg, in the county of Montgom cry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pump-stock, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
My invention appertains to force pumps; and it consists in the detailed construction, as hereinafter described, of a pump-stock which, while it is applicable to force-pumps of different kinds and classes, is especially designed to be used as a part of and in combination with the force-pump for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 205,688 were granted to me on the 2d day of July, 1878.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the shell or casing of my improved pump-stock. It is made of cast-iron by a single casting and in one piece, and is composed of a cylinder, a, of even diameter throughout, which abuts at its lower end or bottom against the base-piece I), which has a slot, 0, for theinsertion of the piston or plunger rod. At the top ofcylinder a is inserted a bushing, d, with a central aperture for the play of the pitman or sucker-rod e. The-latter is connected atits upper end to the handle B,\vhich is fnlcrumed in an arm, (J, that is pivoted or hinged at its lower end in the stock-shell A, so as to permit (by the vibrations of the arm 0) of a true upand-down motion of the piston or plunger rod.
Cast in one piece.with and forming an integral part of the cylinder a is a secondary cylinder, a, which abuts at its lower end against the base-piece I), and is cast with a bent part or elbow, a the month a of which is screwthreaded for the insertion of the upper end of the discharge-pipe of the pump, which is submerged in the well or cistern below the pumpstock. In other words, this secondary cylinder a forms, so tospeak, a continuation of the discharge-pipe, and is as such provided with a discharge-nozzle, b, above which cylinder a bulges out, so as to form an air-chamber, c, the same diameter as the main barrel a. This air-chamber c, it will be seen, is cast in one piece with the barrel to, and is divided or separated therefrom by the longitudinal wall or diaphragm D, which extends from the basepiece b up to the top of the casting. The air chamber 0 is contracted at its upper end, where it has an aperture or opening cored by a screw-plug 0 The air-chamber c, from the nozzle or outlet 1) up to the stopper c, is throughout of the same diameter as the adjacent barrel a, of which it forms an integral part.
By the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I cast the several parts of my improved pumpstock in one single piece. In other words, while the parts a, a, and c fulfill the requirements of different purposes, (which I am well aware are old in different combinations and constructions,) they yet form integral parts of the main structure A. Hence What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
As an article of manufacture, stock A, having the longitudinal diaphragm D, whereby the main barrel a is formed, and adjacent thereto the auxiliary barrel or discharge-pipe at, having the elbow a nozzle or discharge b, enlarged air-chamber 0, provided at its contracted upper end with the plug or stopper and slotted base-piece, all cast in one piece, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of witnesses.
CHRISTIAN SCHMIDT.
