Description

April 7, 1953 M. D. soUTHwom-H CLEANING DEVICE: FOR DANDY ROLLS Filed April 7, 1950 Patented Apr. 7, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLEANING DEVICE FOR DANDY ROLLS Melvin D. Southworth, Springfield, Mass., assignor to Southworth Company, West Springfield, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application April "l, 1950, Serial N0. 154,643
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in paper manufacture.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to a novel means for operating in conjunction with the dandy roll of a paper making machine which means is adapted to maintain the dandy roll in condition for its function.
A dandy roll has a foraminous surface formed from a woven wire of fine mesh and is mounted for bearing on the wet web formed on and carried by the traveling making element such as the Fourdrinier wire. The dandy roll is rotated by the web and wireand has a certain forming function and usually, but not always, carries one or l more watermarking devices on the surface there- The dandy roll picks up more or less ber particles so that its mesh becomes clogged and its function is impaired, all of which is obviously objectionable. Attempts have been made to prevent the clogging of the foraminous surface by applying fabric to the surface of the continuously rotating dandy roll but such has not been entirely satisfactory.
According to this invention, a bristled member is disposed adjacent the dandy in such a manner that the surface of the dandy in the rotation thereof is cleaned by the bristles. The action is continuous and the bristles operate to remove from the surface of the dandy such matter as tends to clog the mesh of the dandy covering and characteristics of the Watermarking devices and is otherwise foreign thereto.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a dandy roll having the cleaning device of the invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational View of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
Side rails such as are usually employed in a paper making machine are represented by 2 which, as usual, have dandy stands 4 fixed to and extending upwardly therefrom.
A dandy roll of ordinary form having a woven wire covering is represented by 6 and has end shafts or trunnions 8 disposed in bearings I0 of the stands.
Brackets I2 which may be adjustable by screws I4 of the stands have saddles I6 in which end portions I8 of a longitudinal bristle support 20 are received.
Brstles 22 extend downwardly from the bristle 2 support 20 and are adapted to engage the surface of the dandy roll 6.
The dandy roll rests on the paper web carried by the wire W so that it is rotated thereby as the wire carries the web along.
The dandy roll being in continuous rotation, its surface is acted upon by the bristles which lift off therefrom fiber particles and the like so that the surface of the dandy is maintained clean at all times.
The brackets I2 may be moved up or down so as to adjust the bristles relative to the dandy and vary the action thereof.
The bristles 22 may be natural or synthetic all as it may be desired and the length thereof may be such as will provide the most efcient cleaning operation.
The invention may be embodied in other speciflc forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The combination with transversely spaced stands extending upwardly vertically from side rails of a paper making machine of means for cleaning the surface of a dandy roll continuously rotated in said stands by a paper web being formed on a continuously moving Fourdrinier Wire comprising, a brush structure including an elongated bristle support having opposite end portions and bristles extending downwardly therefrom for brushing the surface of a rotating dandy roll, adjusting means in upper sides of said stands movable up and down vertically to adjusted positions, brackets in engagement with and moved up and down by said adjusting means provided with saddle slots open on upper sides thereof in which opposite ends of said bristle sup.. port are seated, all adapted and arranged whereby said bristle support may be moved up or down for variable engagement of said bristles with the upper side of the dandy roll surface.
