3 Claims.
The present invention relates to mechanisms for securing spiral sash balances to window sashes and embodies, more specifically, an improved mechanism by means of which the foot of the sash balance mechanism of the spiral type may be secured effectively to window sashes. The form of spiral sash balance to which the present invention is particularly applicable is shown in the patent to Larson No. 2,477,069, dated July 26, 1949, and, in accordance with the present invention, a foot mechanism is provided by means of which the spiral member of the sash balance may be effectively and properly secured to a desired window sash.
The invention will be more readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly broken away, and showing a portion of a spiral sash balance mechanism and the related foot mechanism by means of which it may be secured efiectively to a window sash;
Figure 2 is a fragmental view in section, taken on line 22 of Figure 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 3 is a iragmental view in section, taken on line 33 of Figure 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the above drawings, a spiral sash balance of the general form illustrated in the patent above mentioned is illustrated at IE! and is suitably secured at its upper end to the window frame or jamb. The lower end of the sash balance is provided with a spiral strip I I which coacts with spring mechanism within the balance It in order to accomplish the desired balancing operation on the window sash. The window sash is illustrated generally at H. and is suitably'received within a window frame or jamb not shown.
The lower end of the sash at the side adjacent the balance I 6 has secured thereto the foot mechanism of the present invention. This foot mechanism comprises a plate member l3 formed with an arm I4 adapted to be driven into the sash. Drive nails l5 may also be provided to secure the plate l3 to the bottom of the sash. The end of the plate l3 remote from the arm I4 is formed with an extension I! that lies generally at right angles to the plate 13 and is formed with an eye it adapted to receive a pivot pin I9 by means of which the extension I! may be hinged to the spiral strip II. An abutment arm 2i! is pressed out of the material of extension 16 and is so formed that it will engage the bottom of the groove l6 and serve to locate the spiral balance It! properly in the groove. This abutment arm 20 thus serves the important function of quickly and efiectively positioning the spiral balance mechanism in the proper position and thus greatly facilitates the operation of mounting the sash balance upon the sash.
While the invention has been described with specific reference to the accompanying drawings, it is not to be limited save as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A sash balance connector for joining a sash balance device to a movable sash comprising a plate member adapted to be connected to the bottom of a sash, said plate member having an extension divided longitudinally into three parts, the two outside parts extending upwardly and terminating in eyes for receiving the ends of a pivot pin hinging said extension to a sash balance, and the middle part curving back upon the plate for abutting the sash and properly locating the sash balance with respect thereto.
2. A sash balance connector for joining the spiral strip of a spring balance device to a movable sash comprisin a plate portion adapted to lie substantially parallel to the bottom of a sash, and an upwardly extending portion divided into three strips, the two outside strips being formed into substantially parallel eyes for holding the ends of a'pivot pin engaging the spiral strip of the spring balance, and the intermediate strip being curved substantially back upon said plate portion to abut the sash for properly locating the spring balance with respect to the side of the sash.
3. A sash balance connector for joining the spiral strip of a spring balance to a movable sash comprising a, plate portion adapted to lie substantially parallel to the bottom of a sash, and an upwardly extending portion having an abutment arm curving substantially back upon said plate portion and a bifurcated eye adapted to receive a pivot pin for hinging the spiral stripv to the connector, said abutment arm servin to locate the spiral strip with respect to the side of the sash.
