Patented Mar. 31, 1953 UNITED STATES DECORATIVE PLATE FOR OPHTHALMIC FRAMES Frank W. Lindblom, Warwick, R. I., assignor to Welsh Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application September 29, 1949, Serial No. 118,698
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an ophthalmic mounting particularly a manner of decorating the same so as to enhance the appearance thereof.
It is usual in the design of metal ophthalmic mountings to make the same of a pleasing form by means of particular curvature of lens rim, etc. In order to enhance the appearance of such mounting the rim material usually has decorative markings thereon,
The object of this invention is to provide a mounting of the above character so constructed as to provide for detachably securing thereto a decorative plate or the like to enhance the appearance of the mounting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mounting so constructed that the retailer of such mountings may readily attach a decorative plate thereto at the time of sale.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of an ophthalmic mounting embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken substantially along line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of the mounting shown in Figure 1 and on an enlarged scale;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a decorative plate forming part of the mounting shown in Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a similar view showing the rear side of the plate; and
Figure 7 is an elevational view of an attaching member for securing the plate to the mounting.
In proceeding with the invention, I provide a metal ophthalmic mounting and secure to the upper side of the lens rim a support which may take various appropriate forms. To this support I detachably secure a decorative plate one edge of which follows the general contour of the rims and may be decoratively embossed. This plate may be attached to the lens rim at the time of retail sale thereof, thus providing for an inventory of plates of various designs and contours and a more limited inventory of basic mountings.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description of the invention, Ill designates a metal ophthalmic mounting comprising lens rims ll joined or connected in spaced relation by a bridge bar I2 and a nose piece l3. Temples [4 are hinged to usual end pieces l5 carried by the rims H.
In the present disclosure a support l6 having openings I1 at either end portion is attached to the upper side of each rim in any appropriate To this support I detachably mount a decorative member or plate Hi, the inner or lower edge of which extends on the same contour as that of the adjacent portion of the rims. The plate has openings I9 thereon at a location to align with the said openings H. A screw 20 having a head 2| is provided with a shank 22 which has threads thereon of elongated pitch, for self-threading into the walls of the said aligned openings, and secures the member I8 to the support IS.
The contour of member l8 in the present instance is made to provide an over-all appearance of so-called upsweep which is at present in popular demand and the obverse face of the said member l8 may have decorative markings thereon to simu ate engravings or may be decoratively embossed as shown.
It will be apparent that I have disclosed a metal ophthalmic mounting, the rims of which may be made of a standard construction and have attached thereto a support to which there may be detachably secured a decorative plate to enhance the appearance of the mounting. It will also be apparent that the said decorative plate may be easily attached in position by the retailer whereby permitting the retailer to stock an inventory of plates to provide a wide range of choice of particularly decorated plates and a minimum of basic mountings.
I claim:
An ophthalmic mounting comprising lens rims, a fin in generally the plane of the rim fixed to and extending outwardly therefrom at the upper edge thereof said fin being of a, thickness less than the rim providing a shoulder at the juncture of the two and a decorative plate detachably secured in contact with said fin and engaging said shoulder with the lower edge thereof extending in the general curvature of said rims at the adjacent portion of said rim, said plate being of a thickness substantially the distance that the fin is spaced from the plane of the edge of the rim on the side of the fin that the plate is located so that the face of the plate lies substantially flush with the edge of the rim.
