SHUTTER BLIND SLAT HOLDER Filed July 29, 1949 -IIII INVENTOR.

16 x /aamr/Y a ATTD RN EYE Patented Mar. 3, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHUTTER. BLIND SLAT HOLDER Albert J. Olson, Tarpon Springs, Fla.
Application July 29, 1949, Serial No. 107,473
1 Claim.
This invention relates to awning shutters, and more particularly to an awning shutter which is an eflicient ventilator, and at the same time satisfactorily shades the room from the direct rays of the sun.
This invention is an improvement over the shutter blind of my copending application, Serial No. 7,413, filed February 10, 1948.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved bearing arm for improving the operation and construction of the shutter blind described in detail in my copending application, Serial No. 7,413.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bearing arm for a shutter blind, the bearing arm including a plurality of slots through which extend the ends of the flexible slats or blades whereby the fiexible slats will lie snugly together when the shutter blind is moved to its closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shutter bearing arm which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on the line I--I of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the shutter bearing arm according to the present invention;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral Ill designates a portion of a conventional window sash or frame which is adapted to be moved toward and away from a window. Arranged adjacent the window sash III is an operating rod I I which, when actuated in the manner described in detail in my copending application, will move the slats or shutters I2 into and out of their closed positions.
The present invention is directed to a novel bearing arm which is designated generally by the numeral I3, and the bearing arm I3 is preferably fabricated of a single suitable piece of material. The bearing arm I3 includes a body portion I I which has a pair of longitudinally-extending, spaced parallel slots I5 and I6 extending therethrough. A portion of the slats I2 is adapted to be trained through the slots I5 and IS in the manner shown in Figure 4.
Projecting from the body portion I 4 and arranged angularly therewith is a support portion I! which is provided with a pair of spaced openings I8 and I 9. A pin projects through the opening I8 and into engagement with the window sash III, whereby a pivotal connection. is provided between the bearing arm and the window sash II]. A similar pin 2I projects through the other opening I9 and into engagement with the operating rod II, so that the bearing arm is also pivotally connected to the operating rod II.
From the foregoing it is apparent that a bearing arm I3 has been provided which is especially suitable or adapted to be used with the awning structure of my copending application. Thus, the flexible shutters or slats I2 that are made of fabric such as heavy canvas or the like, are arranged so that a portion of the slats I2 is trained through the slots I5 and I6 in the bearing arm I3. It is to be understood that a plurality of the bearing arms I3 are used in each awning structure. The pins 20 and 2I pivotally connect the bearing arm I3 to the window sash I0 and the operating rod II. Then, upon move ment of the operating rod I I, as described in my copending application, all of the bearing arms I3 will be pivoted so that the slats I2 can be moved into and out of closing position. Thus, by proper movement of the operating rod II, the position of the shutters or slats I2 can be adjusted so that any desired amount of sunlight or ventilation can be permitted to enter a room.
I claim:
In a shutter blind having a bearing arm including a body portion provided with a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally extending slots and a support portion arranged angularly with respect to said body portion and projecting therefrom the improvement comprising a flexible slat having one end trained through one of said slots in one direction then over the body portion and around the edge thereof to be trained through the other of said slots and then through the first of said slots beneath the portion in said first slot to terminate in a position at right angles to the body portion, the remainder of the slat then overlying that portion thereof that is trained through the slots to extend outwardly of the body portion to terminate in the same plane with the body portion.
ALBERT J. OLSON.
