placed one upon the other cross-wise in a plu--A rality of predetermined directions, and a rotatably mounted vertical driving shaft adapted to carry said magazine upon its upper end and to` periodically rotate or to oscillate it through a predetermined angle.
Such a magazine must be periodically refilled. To this end binder or/and wrapper leaves may be piled up cross-wise in a separate apparatus and the thus obtained pile may be taken out of the piling apparatus and inserted into the magazine of the machine for making the cigarillos, cigars or the bunches therefor. In practice this method of refilling the magazine appears to raise difliculties.
The invention has for its object to avoid these difficulties. It consists in that means for the detachable interengagement of the magazine and the shaft are provided,.which means permit the magazine to be engaged by and to be disengaged .from the shaft, respectively and prevent said magazine, when so engaged, rotating relative to said shaft. The invention thus enables the magazine to be taken out of the bunch or cigar making machine and placed in the refilling apparatus. rihe magazine having been refilled is adapted to be inserted again in the bunch or cigar making machine. Due to this fact the time, during which the machine has to stop for replenishing the stock of tobacco leaves, is considerably reduced.
According to the invention the upper end of the driving shaft may be provided with a noncircular, e. g. rectangular, flange and the lower surface of the magazine may have guide-elements, which are adapted to engage the flange of the driving shaft and constitute a guiding channel which is open at at least one of its ends, so that the guiding-channel is adapted to receive said flange when the magazine is brought into engagement with the driving shaft.
The magazine may have a separate vertically movable bottom plate, which is connected to an axially reciprocating vertical rod. The means for the interconnection of said rod and said bottom plate may consist of a iange provided at the upper end of said rod and of guide-members mounted on the lower surface of said bottom plate and adapted to engage said ange. On one side of the magazine there is provided. a slot or aperture which permits the horizontal disengagement of the magazine both from the vertically movable bottom plate as well as from the rod and driving shaft.
In order that the magazine may be held, when engaged by the driving-shaft, in the. exact working position with respectto said shaft, locking means may be provided.
For the elucidation reference is made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates by way of example a device comprising a magazine according to the invention. In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional View of the magazine,
Fig. 2 is a view of the lower surface thereof,
Fig. 3 is partly an elevational and partly a sectional view of line III-III in Fig. l, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line IV-IV in Fig. 2, in which, however, the bottom plate is in its highest position.
The device according to the drawing comprises a magazine, which is provided with a horizontal bottom plate land sidewalls 2 defining a space having the shape of a cross the corners of which are bevelled. The magazine is open at its upper end and is adapted to contain a pile of preformed binder or/and wrapper leaves, which are placed cross-wise one upon the other. The lower surface of the bottom plate l is provided with two parallel guide-elements 3 having a L-shaped cross section. The space between these guideelements is bounded at one end of said elements by an abutment 4, which is also secured to the lower surface of plate I. The other end of said space is open. In this space a rectangular flange 5 is inserted, said ange being secured to or forming an integral piece of the upper end of a hollow shaft 6. The flange 5 is slidably fitted in the space between the guide-elements 3. When. the flange 5 abuts against the abutment 4, the axis of shaft 6 is in alignment with the axis of the magazine l, 2. In this working position of the magazine the flange 5 is held by a locking de vice attached to the abutment 4 and consisting of a blade spring provided with a protruding head 'l which engages a hole or recess 8 made in the flange 5. The shaft 6 thus carries the magazine, which is moved together with said shaft, when the latter is rotated or oscillated. The magazine is adapted to be removed from said shaft in horizontal direction.
Mounted in the magazine l, 2 is an individual bottom plate 9, which is attached to the upper end of an axially reciprocating vertical rod I0. This bottom plate is adapted to bring the pile of tobacco leaves in a position in which the uppermost leaf of the pile can be removed by a leafholder and.. taken tod another place inthe bunch or ciganmaking, machine. The plate e is provided'with guide-elements II having L-Shaped' cross sections and engaging a flange or disc I2 which is mounted at the upper end of rod IG. In the plate I a slot I3 is made, 'said slot permitting the rod I0 to pass when the magazine is horizontally moved relative to the Ashaft 5. In the lower end of one of the side-Walls 2 Vizthes'idewall facing the open end of'slot-I'SL andlthespace between the guide-elements 3, an aperture I4 is made, so as to permit the flange I2 and the rod IIIv to pass. When the bottom plate k9 is in its lowest position, the magazine and plate S: are allowed to be removed vfrom the driving shaft 6' and the. rod I0 in horizontal direction or brought into engagement' with said shaft and Ysaid rod. Consequently; theentire magazine is vauaunte'd to be 'removed from the bunch or cigar making machine 'and placed: into a refillingv apparatus for replenishing'thestock of binder or/and Wrapperl'eave's.
What I claim is:
1'. A device comprising, in combination, a magfor" holding" a-` pile of tobacco leaves for ing side walls for laterally confiningv said .pile with" the' leaves 'in' sliperpo'sed' cross-Wise relationship in' a plurality of predetermined directions,v a rotatably-mounted vertical. drivingv shaft adapted vto carry said ma'gazineat its Vupper end and periodically to rotate the magazine through apredetermined angle, and means ford'etaehably Engaging Said magazine and Said' ShaftV said means comprising a flange provided on the up- .per endY of said driving shaft and 'guide elements .provided at the lower ends of said side walls,
a predetermined angle, and means for detachably engaging said magazine and said shaft, said means permitting the magazine to be engaged by and to be disengaged from the shaft, respectively, and preventing said magazine when so engaged from being rotated relative to said shaft, a vertically movable bottom plate provided in the magazine, an axially reciprocable vertical rod adapted to be connected to said bottom plate, a flange provided at the upper end of said rod, and guidemembers mounted on the lower surface of said bottom plate and engaged with said flange, and there being an aperture in one of said side Walls. of. said magazine, said aperture permitting the magazine' and the vertically movable bottom plate to be engaged by and to be disengaged from the: driving shaft and the rod, respectively, in a horizontal direction.
3.` A device comprising, in combination, a magazine for holding a. pile of tobacco leaves for cigars, cigarillos and the like, said magazine having side walls' for'latera'liy confining said pile with the leaves in superposed cross-Wise relationship in a plurality' of' predetermined directions, a rotatably mounted vertical ldriving shaft adapted to carry said magazineat its upper end, a' iiange provided on the upper end'of said driving shaft, guide elements provided at the lower ends of said side walls-said guide elementsdeta'chably engaging the flange on the driving" Shelf-t Vand definingv al guiding channel, said channel being open at one of its ends for permitting 'disengagement of said shaft from said magazine in ahorizontal direction, a vertically movable bottom plate provided in the magazine, an axially reciprocable vertical rod adapted to be connected to said bottom plate, a fiange provided at'the upper end of'saioll rod, and guide members mountedv on the lower surface of said bottom plate and engaged with said'lange, and' there being an aperture in one of said side walls of said magazine, said aperture permitting the magazine and the vertically movable bottom plate to be engaged by and to be disengaged from the driving' shaft and the rod, respectively, in a horizontal direction.
