Patented Feb. 24, 1953 MATTRESS CONSTRUCTION Roman F. Korney, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Simmons Company, New York, N. Y., acorporation of Delaware Application April 11, 1949, Serial No. 86,645
2 Claims.
This invention relates to mattress constructions and, more particularly, it relates to mattress constructions in which an inner spring construction is employed.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a mattress with two inner spring constructions extending lengthwise of the mattress and separated by a fabric partition.
Another object is to provide a mattress with two inner spring sections, of which one may be composed of a higher gauge spring wire than the other section.
Another object is to prevent the inner spring sections from shifting towards the median line of the mattress.
Another object is to provide a mattress construction which will retain its original shape and appearance after continued use.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of this specification, and with said objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and more particularly defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a mattress Aconstruction embodying a simple form of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section, .partly broken away, and taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinal section, upon an enlarged scale, taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawing, the reference characters 5 and -S designate two inner spring sections which extend lengthwise of the mattress' and are separated by a fabric partition 1. Eachv inner spring section comprises the usual coiled springs 8 arranged lengthwise and crosswise of the mattress with corresponding end coils connected by helical border tie wires 9 vand lil. Other transversely xtending helical tie wires I I connect corresponding end coils of the springs. The helical tie wires are connected to the springs in the customary manner, as is well understood by those skilled in this art.
Top and bottom paddings l2 and I3, composed of cotton, kapok, or other similar material, eX- tend along the top and bottom of the spring sections. The .paddings extend from the fabric partition I to the side edges, and from end to end of the mattress, and an intermediate lining I4 is placed outside of the padding and extends from i side to side of the mattress and from end to end thereof. The side edges I5 of the lining I4, together with the edge portions of the padding, are folded around the border tie wires 9 and IU, and are secured to the transverse helical tie wires by hog rings I6, or otherwise. Desirably the lining I 4 is drawn quite taut and secured to the helical tie Wires, whereby the lining is maintained smooth and the coiled springs are prevented from shifting toward the median line of the mattress construction.
Inner lining sheets I'I are interposed between the paddings and the spring sectionsy and the outer edges thereof are secured to the helical tie wires It, along with the intermediate linings I4, by hog rings I6, or otherwise. The inner linings I'I prevent the padding from bulging through and between the end coils of the spring sections.
Outside of the intermediate linings I4 are top and bottom coverings I9, which are sewed to the first mentioned linings and to the top and bottom edges of the partition 'I as at 20. The partition limits the expansion of the coiled springs to a certain degree.
Sewed to the edge portions of the top and bottom coverings is an edge boxing 2l which encloses the side edges of the mattress. If desired, strips of tape 22 may be folded over the meeting edges of the top and bottom -coverings and the edge boxing and sewed thereto to add to the appearance of the mattress.
From the above it is apparent that I have provided a mattress construction which is simple, practical, and very efficient, Iand that the likelihood of stretching or spreading is practically eliminated. Furthermore, the partition permits either section to be depressed without affecting the other section.
Having thus described my invention, it is lobvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement, and ycombination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a mattress, the combination of a pair of individual spring sections extending lengthwise of the mattress, each spring section comprising a plurality of coiled springs suitably connected to provide a unitary structure, one of said spring sections having diiferent characteristics than the other, a lengthwise extending fabric partition strip positioned between said sections, top and bottom linings covering the top and bottom faces of the respective spring construction, the adjacent portions of said linings being secured to the partition strip, padding covering the respective linings, intermediate linings overlyingl said padding, and top and bottom cover sheets overlying said intermediate linings, the latter and said cover sheets being secured to said partition strip, portions of the peripheral edges of said top and bottom and intermediate linings adjacent the exterior edges of the spring construction being secured together and to the adjacent portions of the spring construction to enclose adjacent portions of the padding, and an edge boxing strip enclosing the side and end edges of the mattress having its edge portions secured to the edge portions of the respective cover sheets.
2. A mattress for a double bed, said mattress Y comprising top, bottom, side, and end cover members, a longitudinal partition dividing said mattress into tWo substantially equal sections, springs Within each section, the respective end portions of said springs engaging said top and bottom cover members, the springs Within one of said sections being of heavier gauge and less resiliency than the springs in the other of said sections, padding disposed upon at least one of said cover members and an outer covering engaging said padding.
