LONG CENTER FOR STOVES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,889, dated August 15,1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. WARD DEVORE, of Lawrencebnrg, Dearborn county, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Long Centers for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of long centers which are made in sections to allow of expansion and contraction without injury to the center or the rest of the stove; and its object is to simplify the construction of the long center and render it more efficient in operation than long centers are as heretofore constructed.

Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through a long center constructed according to my invention, showing it in position on the top of the stove. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of one of the sections, the end of the other section being shown in perspective in Fig. 6. Fig. 4 is a top view of the long center complete. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the supporting-post, which is cast with or otherwise connected to the top oven-plate, and by which the middle of the long center is supported, and also shows a view of the preferred form of support for the foot of the said post.

The long center consists of the two halves or sections A B, the outer end of each half being formed of the usual shape. The central end of the section A is provided with a tongue or extension, A, which, when the two sections are put together, fits into the recess B in the end of the section B. The end of the tongue A is provided with a downwardly-projecting hook-shaped lug, a, which is inserted through the opening I) (see Fig. 6 more particularly) at the end of the recess B, the extremity a. of the hook, when the two sections are placed together, resting against the under side of the section B, as best shown in Fig. 2. A slight space is left between the lug a and the end of the bottom 0 of the recess B, to permit of a slight longitudinal movement of the tongue A in the recess B ,to allow for expansion and contraction under the influence of the heat in the stove. By this construction the long center may be lifted from the stove by either end and without breaking joint at the middle. From the under side of the central end of the section B projects the post D, which is preferably placed at the middle of the long center and immediately over the supporting-post E on the top oven-plate of the stove. post E may be of any suitable height, and its height will depend upon the length of the supporting-post D. The end of the post D is rounded in one direction, as shown in Fig. 6, and the upper end of the supporting-post E is provided with the grooves 01 d, the length of the groove (1 beingin a line with the length of the stove, and the length of the other groove, d, being at right angles to the groove d, or across the stove. The purpose of these grooves is to form a more substantial support for the post D, preventing it from slipping in either direction on the supporting-post E. When preferred the end of post E may be rounded and the end of post D be grooved.

It is sometimes desirable to place the long center parallel with the length of the stove, and it is to provide for this that I place two grooves, one at right angles to the other, in the top of the supporting-post E. When the long center is in position on the stove the post D rests This upon the top of the supporting-post E, as 7 shown in Fig. 1.

The supporting post or step E is preferably cast with the top oven-plate, but it may, however, be made separate and afterward bolted or riveted to the plate.

As above described, the long center is very easily and cheaply constructed, and when in position on the stove the two halves are firmly united and are secured from lateral movement, and yet the joint is so constructed as to permit of slight motion to allow for expansion and contraction under the influence of the heat in the stove. Furthermore, that feature of my invention which relates to theformation of the post D and post or stop E enables the center, at its middle, to be well secured against lateral movement.

What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A long center for stoves, consisting of two sections, the central ends of said. sections being secured together by alock-joint, the elements of said joint being formed on the ends of the sections, and so constructed as to permit of a slight .degreeof longitudinal movement, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. A long center consisting of two sections, A and B, the section A being provided with the tongue A, having a hooked extremity, a, and the section B having the recess B and opening I), substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. A long center for stoves, consisting of two halves locked'together by their central ends, one of said halves being provided with i the post D, in combination with the support-,-

ing-post E, the top of said supporting-post 15 being provided with the grooves d 11, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

4. A long center for stoves, consisting of two sections, the section A being provided with tongue A, having hooked extremity a, 20 the section B being provided with recess B and post D, in combination with the supporting-post E, provided with grooves d d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
