Description

(No Model.)
. J. HYSLOP, 'Jr.
. NAIL. No. 262,780. Patented Aug. 15, 1882.

JOHN HYSLOP, JR, OF ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,780, dated August 15, 1882,
I Application filed April 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HYSLOP, Jr., of Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tacks, Nails, Screws, and Rivets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tack, enlarged, to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same shown as driven into a block.
The object of this invention is to produce nails made in such a manner as to ornament the object into which they are driven.
The invention consists in a tack, nail, screw,
or rivet made with a head having a raised center and an ornamental flange, whereby the said head will have a wide holding-surface and will be highly ornamental, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body of a tack, the head of which is made with a raised center, B. The raised center can be semi-spherical, as shown in the drawings, or of any other desired shape. Around the base of the center B is formed a flange, O, the edge of which is scalloped, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or made of other ornamental form.
The tacks, nails, screws, and rivets thus constructed are designed for use in upholstering furniture and carriages, in making harness, in nailing .boot or shoe soles, and for other uses where an ornamental fastening is required.
in using the improvement the tack, nail, screw, or rivet is driven or otherwise forced into the substance to be fastened until the under side of the flanged head rests against the surface of the said substance, as illustrated in Fig.3. This construction gives the flanged heads a wide bearing-surface, so that they will hold the object to which they may be applied securely, and at the same time will be highly ornamental-two qualities that make them highly useful for upholstering purposes, while their ornamental appearance makes them valuable as harness-nails and as shoe-nails.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paton t- A tack, nail, screw, or rivet made with a head having a raised center, 13,. and an ornamentalflange,0, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said head will have a wide holding-surface and will be highly ornamental, as set forth.
