Patented Nov. 18, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GENERAL UTILITY LAMP Jack Campo, Chicago, Ill.
Application March 9, 1949, Serial No. 80,408
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in lamps and more particularly to a general utility lamp having an attaching base which may be fixed to a wall, ceiling, floor or other supporting structure, or for use as a supporting base as a portable lamp.
An important object of the invention is to provide a vertically adjustable post or standard and an arm for the lamp slidably and swivelly supported on the standard and swingable horizontally to adjust the lamp in any desired position.
Another object is to provide a clamp swivelly mounted on the standard by means of which the lamp supporting arm, a flash light case or other object may be easily and quickly interchange ably mounted on the standard.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part'hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the standard,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lamp supporting arm,
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 3,
of the swivel clamp,
"Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on a line 6-4 of Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is a side elevational view showing a flash light supported on the standard.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral designates a tubular standard supported on an attaching base 6.
Aftube l is threaded at its lower end in base 6 centrally of standard 5 and is provided with a cap 8 at its upper end closing the upper end of the standard to hold the standard firmly on the 1 base. Centering or spacing washers 9 hold the tube centrally in the standard.
A rod 10 is slidably inserted in the upper end of tube I and is secured in vertically adjusted position by an adjusting screw I I inserted through an opening l2 in one side of standard 5 and 35 Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view threaded into one side of a collar [3 fixed to tube 1 and through an opening 14 in the tube to bear against the rod.
A cylindrical housing 55 is closed at its lower end by a threaded plug I6 having a threaded opening I? for connecting the upper end of rod Hi thereto and the top of housing 15 is formed with an inturned flange i8 under which is positioned a flange H! on the lower end of a hollow socket 23. A ball 2! is snapped in the socket behind lips 22 at the upper end thereof by forming notches 23 at diametrically opposite sides of the upper end of the socket, the ball having a stem 24 rising therefrom.
The ball is frictionally held against swivel movement in the socket by a pin 25 positioned in the socket with a tapered lower end 26 on the pin engaged by a tapered inner end 21 on an adjusting screw 23 threaded through one side of housing I5.
The stem 24 is threaded upwardly into a nut 29 suitably secured in the bottom of a housing 30 having an open top.
A pair of arcuate clamping jaws 3| are formed with legs 32 and 33 at their lower ends hinged to the opposite sides of nut 29 for opening and closing movement, the jaws projecting upwardly above the open top of housing 30.
An internally threaded boss 34 is suitably secured to the outer side of leg 32 for threaded engagement by the inner end of an adjusting screw 35 passing freely through the leg 33 and outwardly at one side of housing 30, with a knob 36 at the outer end of the screw. A collar 31 is loosely positioned on the screw between leg 33 and knob 36 and a coil spring 38 is positioned on screw 35 between the legs 32 and 33 of the jaws.
A tubular arm 39 is secured at one side to a lamp socket 40 by means of a tubular rod 41 threaded into the socket and extending centrally through the arm with a cap 42 secured on the outer end of the rod and held against the outer end of the arm by a nut 43. An electric wire 44 enters the outer end of rod 4| for connection with the socket.
An adaptor collar 45 of yieldable material is loosely mounted on arm 39 and is gripped between jaws 3| to hold arm 39 in a horizontal or angularly adjusted position at the upper end of standard 5 by the swivel adjustment of ball 2| in socket 20.
A flash light casing 46 may be interchangeably supported by clamping jaws 3| in place of lamp arm 39, as shown in Figure 7.
In the operation of the device, the base 6 may be suitably attached to a wall, floor, ceiling or other suitable supporting structure to hold standard 5 in either a vertical or horizontal po sition, and either the lamp arm 39 or flash light 45 secured at the outer end of standard 5 by the clamping jaws 31. The lamp may be adjusted angularly on the standard by releasin adjusting screw 28 and swinging ball 2| in its socket. The notches 23 in socket 29 receive stem 24 to enable the ball 2| to swivel a complete 180.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understandin of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention, what is claimed as'new is:
A lamp support comprising a standard, an open top housing at the upper end of said standard 'swivelly connected thereto, a pair of opposed clamping jaws adapted for clamping said lamp therebetween above the housing and having legs depending into said housing and pivoted in the bottom of said housing for relative movement to open and close the jaws, spring means in said housing between said legs for opening said jaws, and means for closing said jaws comprising a boss on one leg, a screw freely extended through said legs with one end threaded into one end of said boss and its other end extending out of said housing, a manipulating knob on said othe end of the screw, and a collar loose on said screw between said knob and the other leg.
JACK CAMPO.
