6 Claims. (Cl. 113-22) This invention relates to metal working machines and it has particular reference to a machine especially designed for assembling the preformed sections of metallic shipping and storage containers.
A shipping and storage container in the form of a bilge type metal drum such as assembled on the machine herein described forms the subject mattei` of a co-pending application, Serial No. 107,204, now abandoned. These drums are exceptionally useful as containers for resin and in current practice, the end sections of the drums, with installed heads, are prefabricated at the factory and shipped in nested relationship to Various stills where the sections are joined together by the user. Htherto, there has been no practical apparatus by which to uniformly produce the bilge seam for joining the sections together and to positively insure against leakage.
It is therefore the primary object of the present invention to provide a machine of such simple construction and mode of operation that it may be used in areas where skilled workmen are unavailable yet accomplishing with untrained workmen results comparable to those of more complicated automatic equipment under the Asupervision of skilled workmen.
Other objects will become apparent as thedescription proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawing, reference numeral I0 denotes a substantially T-shaped platform which is supported in elevated position on legs I' I. Supported in turn on the platform I0 by means of a plurality of circularly spaced uprights I2'i s an annular mounting I3. Thismounting, as illustratedrin Figures 3 and 4 has a circumferential recess I4 interiorly of its upper edge which rotatably retaken on line 2 ceives a depending annular flange I5 `of a ring gear I6. This flange prevents other than rotative displacement of the ring gear IB on vthe mounting I3.
-At one point on the periphery of the mounting I3, preferably above the end of the platform I0, there is affixed a bracket rI1 on which is mounted a bearing I8. J ournaled in this bearing is a shaft I9, carrying on its outer end a crank 20 and on its inner end a pinion 2| whose teeth engage those of the ring gear I6 and is adapted to effect rotation of the ring gear when the crank 20 is operated.
Above the bearing I8 of shaft I9 is disposed another bearing 22. A stub shaft 23 is mounted in this latter bearing and to the inner end of this shaft is affixed an arm 24 which is slightly curved to conform to the curvature of the ring gear. The arm 24 has an integral boss 25 on its upper surface which is bored to provide a socket for a operating lever 26, by which the arm is pivotally moved on its axis 23 as well as inwardly and outwardly, for reasons to be presently explained.
In the end of the arm 24 opposite its pivotal axis is journaled another stub shaft 21. This shaft carries a flattening roller 28, which has an annularly stepped periphery, as revealed in Figures 4 and 6.
Further referring to Figures 4 and 6; the ring gear I6 is provided with an annular recess 29, in which is disposed an anvil ring 30 and it is upon the upper flat surface of this ring that folding operations are performed to produce the head joining the two end sections of a bilge barrel together.
The upper and lower end sections of the barrel or drum are designated as 3l and 32 respectively and are fragmentarily shown in dotted lines in Figures t? to 5 and in solid lines in Figure 6.
It has been earlier stated that the end sections 3I and 32 are preformed on other machines. The lower section 32 is provided with a flange a on its largest end which is slightly wider than the ange b on the large end of the companion section 3| and flange a has a starting bend a. preformed thereon which is adapted to be folded over flange b.
To accomplish the foregoing, the lower section 32 is rst placed in the machine so that its flange a will rest on the upper surface of the anvil ring 30, with the section depending within the gear ring I6. The upper section 3I is then placed so that its fiange bv will'rest upon and lie concentric with the flange a of the bottom section.
To fold the performed bend a' ofthe flange a tion of said flange into close union with the flange of said companion section.

A machine for joining the flanged ends of preformed end sections of a metal container, in which the flanges are of unequal Widths, the Widest being provided with a preformed annular starting bend, a mounting, a rotatable anvil ring in which is suspended by its flange the section Whose ange is the Widest, the companion section being inverted to dispose its flange in contiguous and concentric relationship with the flange of said suspended section, a ring gear supporting said anvil ring, means for actuating said ring gear, rotatable means pivotally supported on said mounting for movement laterally with respect to said anvil ring to engage and fold the starting bend of the widest ilange inwardly during rotation of said rotatable member and rotatable means carried by said mounting and movable into position for flattening the inwardly turned portion of said flange to effect close union of said flanges.
