To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM-D. O0oK,-of Harvard, in the county of Olayand State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the novel arrangement of the steam and exhaust ports of retary engines, and in devices for reversingthe movement of the engine, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved rotary engine in a plane transversely of the shaft. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at right angles to Fig. 1.
A is-the cylinder, closed at its ends by heads a a, and containing the piston B, which is made as a solid cylinderfand fixed upon the shaft '1), that passes through the heads a. The piston B is of smaller diameter than'the .interior of the cylinder A, so that an annular steamway or space is left around the piston, and upon the piston, at one side, is an abutment, d, projecting against the inner surface of the case. The piston is also formed at its mid-length with an annular flange, e, which, taking against the inner surface of the case, divides the steamway into two separate compartments, and I place two abutments, d, diametrically opposed, upon the piston B, one abutment being at one side of the dividing flange, e, and the other at the other side, the
' object being to obtain a continuous and more uniform pressure of the steam than could be obtained if only one abutment were used in a single steamway. At its upper side the cylinder A is formed with a steam-chamber, O, to which steam is to be supplied by pipe f, and within this chamber is fixed a block, g,
of semicircular form, so as to form two separate ports or passages, h h, from the steampipe f to the interior of the cylinder.

In the steam-chamber, above the block 9, is a plate, I, which is in form thesegment of a hollow cylinder, and. is sustained between cross-bars or rollers m in, so that it may be moved endwise. ()n the ends of the platel gates at n are pivoted, and a cross-shaft, 0, fitted in the block 9, is provided with a pinion,p, which meshes with a rack on the under side of the plate Z, so that by turning the shaft 0 the plate I is moved endwise, and either gate it brought down upon the piston B in an operative position, the other gate at the sametime being withdrawn within the port h.
At q is a valve or gate, jointed to plate I for movement therewith, to direct the steam from the pipe f to either port It, according to the direction in' which the piston is to be revolved.
In operation the steam passes through the port h at one side, and, entering the steamway,
presses upon the abutment d, and the gate a at that side being lowered cutsoft the steam from the exhaust-port, so that there is a continuous pressure upon the abutment until it makes nearly a complete revolution and reaches the exhaust ports or pipe 2'. After passing the exhaust-pipe the abutment will raise the gate a, and, passing in front of the steam-port h, will again receive the steampres'sure. To reverse the engine, it is only necessary to move the plate Z, so that the gate n, that has been down, shall be raised, and the other gate moved downward, and then to turn the valve g, so that the steam may pass through the other port 71. and enter the steamway.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a rotary engine, the combination,with the steam-chamber 0, provided with the pipe f and the ports 71., of the slide, having a rack on its under face, and provided with the pivoted gates n g and the pinion 12, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. In rotary engines, the turning-valve q and the slidingplate l, carrying the gates n, in combination with the steam-chamber G and ports 71., and the steam-supply pipe f, substantially as described, for operation as set forth. 3. In rotary engines, the combination of the shaftmpinion p, and curved plate 1, provided withla rack engaging the pinion and carrying the pivoted gates at at its outer end, substantially as described.
