' This invention relates to telegraph selector mechanisms for interpreting a series of timed signal pulses.
Printing telegraph systems, constituting an important application of this invention, have long been subject to serious limitationsbecause of the complex mechanical linkages employed in the constructionof their selector mechanisms. Prior art devices for the purpose have required a large number of operating parts and have been excessively slow and bulky, failing to keep pace with the general progress in the field.
It is foremost among the objects of this invention to provide a selector mechanism which is simple and compact, capable of rapid operation, requiring few parts, and permitting ready servicing in the field. These factors have contributed to a very substantial reduction in cost and maintenance as compared with devices previously employed for similar functions.
The telegraph selectors contemplated herein comprise a frame, an electromagnet carried by the frame having a radial, preferably annular,
' pole and a winding adapted to be energized by an incoming signal, an armature providing an abutment rotatable with a shaft or rotor about a first axis common to said pole and pivoted about a second axis transversely disposed with respect to the first, armature advancing means carried by the frame for intermittently shifting the armature towards the pole, and a driven member movably carried by the frame in a path traversed by the abutment. The abutment may be rotatable relative to the pole of the magnet and with the armature it may be biased away from the pole about the second axis. Where a biasing spring is employed intermittent shifting of the armature towards the pole must overcome the force of sucha spring.
The armature advancing means may assume the form of a' cam for each driven member carfied by the frame, and such a cam or cams may be of annular form. Each driven member may comprise an arm pivotally carried by the frame and latching means may hold each driven member in certain of its adjusted positions until the completion of a cycle whereupon such member may be biased or otherwise restored to an initial or other adjusted position. A suitable latch re: leasing mechanism may be provided, and may be carried by the shaft or rotor carrying the armature. Each driven member canactuate a switch or other desired instrumentalitmdepending upon the specific use for which the apparatus is intended.
The armature-carrying shaftor rotor may beconnected with and disconnected from a driving shaft intermittently, and may be controlled by incoming signals or otherwise.
A more complete understanding of the invention will follow from a detailed description of the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic fragmentary perspective view of a selector embodying some of the features of the present invention;
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are fragmentary perspective views based on Fig.1 depicting positions of the elements under various sets of conditions encountered during operation; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view, also somewhat diagrammatic, depicting a selector embodying additional features of the invention.
The selector mechanism depicted in Figs. 1 to 4 includes a shaft. or rotor ID to which a ring I2 is secured by means of a key M for rotation about the shaft axis. Between-a pairof radial lugs [6 formed on the ring .there'isreceived a flange l8 of an armature or striker, 2B for relative movement about the axisof a pivot pin 22 transversely disposed with respect to the axis of the shaft I0. 'Ihearmature is provided with a face plate 24 of paramagnetic material secured at right angles to the flange l8, and a spring 2% bearing against the lowerportion of the rear surface of the plate 24 biases the armature clockwise about its pivot to its limiting position shown in Fig. 1. I
An annular selector electromagnet 28 surrounds the shaft H) and comprises a support 39 for a winding 32 which is energized through a pair of conductors 34 by the incoming signal pulses. Where the electromagnet is rendered rotatable with the shaft l0,the,concluctors 34 may assume the form of slip rings and brusheawhereas a fixed electromagnet can employ conventional leads to constitute the conductors 34. It is intended that the force of the electromagnet 28 when energized will be insufficient of itself to overcome the bias imposedon the armature 28, but the force is quite sufiieientto hold the armature in an adjacent position against, the biasing effect. I
In order to present the face plate of the armature to the electromagnet a suitable number of times per revolution of 'the s haft Iii, a fixed cam member 36 is supported coaxially about the shaft and'provides the desired number of camilobes 38 which extend into'the path oflthe armature flange l8. Consequently,ias-theshaft l0 rotates, the flange l0 sequentially engages the lobes 38 causing the armature to rock counterclockwise about the pivot 22 towards the winding 32. If the winding is energized at such times, the armature will be magnetically held for the duration of the signal pulse and then restored by its biasing spring 26 to the position shown in Fig. 1.
Also .fixed with respect to the shaft I is a stator frame' 40 having Qaiflange 42 surrounding the electromagnet 28 secured to a flange 44 surrounding the shaft I0 by a suitable number of spacing. bars 46. minals 48, 50, and 52 constituting the poles" or a single pole double throw switch, there being, such I a group of terminals foreaich camlobej38. For each such group, the flange .carries a shaft. 54 pivotally supported in a journal 54. The shaft 54 carries a switch lever 58 having a reduced end 60 projecting into the path followedby the -flange I8 when it is remote from the face of the electromagnet. A spring 62 is interposed between apin 6 4 andthe lever58 biasing the shaft 54 to the position shown'injFig. J 1,, where the, switch contactsjBG carried ,byjjthe, shaft, bridgev the terminals 48 and 50. .Whenthe. armature' is retained adjacentfthe. electromagnet as depicted,
in Fig.; 2, the. arma ture *fiange I8 will clear the switch lever 60 and theswit'ch, contacts 66 will continue to,bridge lthe terminals and 50. :But whenythe armature20 assumes its retracted positionunder the force of the spring 26, its flange 1 I'8 will encounterthesw'itch leveri60 as shown in'jFig.-3. and-move. the upper contact SGfrom the=terminal-50'towards'the terminal 52 until the-movement-is completed as shown in'Fig. 4 where the contacts '66 bridge the'terminals '48 and 52. *The shaft ,54Zwill be retained in this position'by a resilient latch 1 providing a. detent 10 for-engagement with-acam lug 12. At the termination-of a-cycle,-asupport "for the latch is moved to the rightas viewedinjFig: 4,-releasing the cam 12* and permitting" the spring 62 to restore the shaft and its switch contacts to their initial positions as'depicted in Fig. 1'.
By the use --of g a onewrevolution clutch in a manner "known in--theart; rotation of the shaft I0 is initiated bythe-*first-pulseof the incoming signal; and is' terminated-shortly. after the last pulseof the 'signal.
The mechanism 'depictedin Fig. 5 requires no resetting-operation at'the end ofeach revolution to prepare for the'reception of a; succeedingpulse.
The shaft'or rotor-'80'has' securedthereto by means of a pin 82, a clutch driving member 84 which selectively *operates through a 'clutch spring386 to rotate the clutch driven-membenBS.
A collar 90' is secured to the driven-"member 88' 'for rot'ation therewith. This collar contains a slot92"to receivea lever 94' whichl'ismounted for oscillation about-the axis of a" pivot-pin 96 j ournalled-in the collar transversely withrespect' to the axis-of the-shaft-80. "The lever 94 is secured to an-armature' 98 whichis biased in acounterclockwise direction; as viewed inFig. 5," about the pivot pin 96 by means of aspring I00 interposed between the collar"92- and the'lever' 94.
The upper-edge of the lever 94 provides; a-pair of projections I02 and I04 spaced by a gap I06,
and the rear or left end of the lever as viewed in the drawing is "formed withrajprojection I08.
annulargelectromagnet 'IIO surrounds 'the shaft 80 and includes-amagnetimhousing'II2 having" a radial 5 face interrupted by. an annular non-magnetic insert I-I 4:adja cent to the path of the "armature 98. The lower ends I 46 of the levers .I40-and I42 are selectively encountered by the projections I02 and I04 respectively, depending upon the position of the lever 94- which isldetermined asinthe previouscase' bywhethertor not the armature'98 is retained adjacent. xtolfthelalectromagnet or retracted therefrom byl'thebiasing spring I00.
