UMBRELLA-SLIDE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,151, dated July 18, 1882. Application filed April .20, 1882. (No model.) Patented in France October 15, 1881, No. 145,358.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, OLAUDIUS GRATA- LOUP and JEAN BAPTISTE LEYMARIE, citizens of France, residing in the city of Paris, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Slides, (for which we have obtained a patent in France for fifteen years, dated October 15, 1881, No. 145,358,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that part of the mounting of an umbrella, sunshade, or parasol which secures the ends of the stretchers or braces when the umbrella is opened.

The object of the invention is to supersede the ordinarytubular slotted runner and springcatches.

The invention consists of a tubular runner with an upper overhanging notched cap, on which runner, and beneath which cap, is another runner carrying the stretchers. These two tubes or runners slide one on the other, so that free play is given to the stretchers in either opening or closing the umbrella.

In the accompanying drawings the principle of the invention is shown; but the form and materials of construction of the parts may be varied.

Figure 1 is a side view of the improved slide, the umbrella being closed and the stretchers f shown. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the parts forming the invention, the umbrella bein g partly open and showing one of the stretchers in the position it would occupy. a is the stick of the umbrella. b is a tubular runner fitting the stick. To the upper part of the runner b is soldered or otherwise fixed an overhanging cap, 0, which is pierced with the same number of apertures as there are stretchers or braces f. At the lower end the tube b is screw-threaded to receive the annular flange 6. Around the tube 1) is placed, beneath the cap 0, but above handle-ring e, a second tube or slide, g, which has a lower handle-ring, 71 and at the upper end a crown-ring, k, in which crown-ring the inner ends of the stretchers fare pivoted in the ordinary manner. The crown-rin g is covered and concealed by the cap a.

After closing the umbrella in the usual manner all that is required to lock it is to hold the slide g by the finger and thumb at the handle part h and push with the handle-ring e of the slide 1) upward, thereby raising the cap 0 and carrying its solid part around the pivoted inner ends of the stretchersf. In this position the parts will be maintained and the stretchers held close to the handle by the frictional contact between the tubes 1) and g. In opening the umbrella the inverse motion is effected-that is to say, before the runners are lifted the slide 1) is drawn down and the slide 9 held fast until the cape presents its apertures in line with the pivoted ends of the stretchers. Then by pushing on the ring h the runners are lifted, and the umbrella is opened and remains open as long as desired.

It might happen that in opening the umbrella the ring 0 of the slide 1) is raised by accident, to prevent which a spring, r, is lodged in the slide 1) and abuts against the ring h,.

Fig. 8, when the umbrella is prepared for opening. In closing, it suffices to press the spring 1" inward into a suitable recess furnished in the slide b.

We claim 1. The combination of the runner-tube I), having slotted cap 0, with the embracing-tube g, having crown-ring k, and with the stretchers or bracesf, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The tube 9 and crown-ring k, combined with the tube 1), slotted cap 0, spring 1, stick a, and stretchers f, substantially as herein shown and described.
