-2 Claims. (01. 131-174) r 1 o Thisinvention relates to asafety attachment for smokers, and more particularly to such an attachment wherein the lighted end of a cigarette may be' extinguished voluntarily or involuntarily.-

An object of this invention is to provide a safety attachment for smokers, wherein a cigarette may be rendered ineiiective as a fire hazard when the smoker falls asleep while the cigarette is still burning.

Another object of this invention is to provide a safety attachment for smokers, wherein the cigarette is supported externally of the attachment for smoking and is urged interiorly f the attachment when the smoker intentionally or inadvertently releases his grip on the latter.

A further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment for smokers, wherein a cigarette can be extinguished safely when an ash receptacle is not available, and when extinguished, bercarried by the smoker in a neat,compact closure until a time when the extinguished cigarette can be disposed of.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment 'for smokers which is simple in structure and cheap to manufacture.

Further objects of this invention will become apparent upon consulting the drawings in conjunction with the following specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the safety attachment of the present invention in association with a cigarette, the attachment being shown retracted;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the assembled attachment and cigarette of Figure 1, with the attachment being shown extended;

Figure 3 is a side elevational view, with parts in section, of the assembly shown in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line l4 of Figure 3.

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, there is shown the safety attachment of the present invention, generally indicated by the numeral I0, which includes a cylindrical, hollow casing II having one end open and having the other end closed, and a cylindrical holder I2 having one end open and the other end closed. The closed end of the holder I2 is positioned in aligned relation with respect to the open end of the casing II, and the holder I2 is mounted in the casing II for extensile and retractile movements with respect to the latter. Disposed with- V in the open end of the holder I2 and secured thereto is acigarette grip'lfi, there being a longitudinal bore H1 in the cigarette grip I3 for embracingly receiving and supporting a cigarette I5 therein. The cigarette I5 is positioned such that the lighted end thereof is spaced from the closed end of the holder I2 and the other end thereof projects beyond the open end of the holder I2. The peripheral wall of the holder 12 intermediate its ends is cut away, as indicated at IE, to provide a partially enclosed area for housing the portion of the cigarette I5 to be consumed during smoking and to permit the entrance of suiiloient air thereto to support combustion. Spaced from the closed end of the holder I2 and located longitudinally of said holder about the periphery thereof are a plurality of guide fingers indicated by the numeral [1. Each of the guide fingers I1 extends toward the cigarette grip I3. Accordingly, the cigarette I5 may be positioned such that the portion adjacent the cigarette grip I3 is readily accessible to the mouth of the smoker, and the portion partially surrounded by the fingers l1 can be lighted. Extending outwardly from and fixedly secured to the'closed end of the holder I2 is a ring-like flange 26.

Positioned exteriorly of the casing I2 and fixedly mounted longitudinally thereof is a resilient catch I8 which is movable into and out of engagementwith the holder I2 to thereby position the latter in an extended position. The resilient catch l8 has one end fixedly secured to the peripheral wall of the casing I2 by means of rivets indicated at I9, and has the other end bent inwardly, as indicated at 20.

Referring to Figure 3, there is shown in broken lines the normal position of the resilient catch. The peripheral Wall of the casing II is provided with a slot 2| for the insertion and withdrawal therethrough of the bent end as of the resilient catch I8.

Supported Within the casing l I and operatively connected to the holder I2 is a resilient member 22, which normally urges the holder i2 into a retracted position. One end of the resilient member I2, which is illustrated as a spring, is fixedly secured to the closed end of the casing II by means of a lug 23. The other end of the resilient member 22 is fixedly secured to .9. lug 2-3, the lug being fixedly secured to the flange 25.

With the safety attachment and cigarette in assembled relation, as shown in Figure 1, when it is desired to smoke the cigarette E5, the casing II is grasped by the hand of the smoker. While so grasped, the smoker exerts an outwardly directed pull on the holder l2, such pull resultin in the holder l2 being urged to an extended position, as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The resilient catch [8 is then pressed inwardly causing the bent end 20 thereof to extend through the slot 2| in the casing II and to engage the flange 26 carried by the holder l2 to thereby hold the holder I2 inan extended position. The resilient catch" I8 is kept in its position of'enga'gement with the flange 26, as the cigarette is lighted and smoked. When the resilient catch I8 is released, due to an intentional release thereof by the smoker, the holder 2'2iis'iufgediintofa retracted position and the lighted end. of the cigarette I is completely enclosed. Accordingly, the cigarette IE will be extinguished, jduev to ith'e lack of a sufficient amount of air to support combustion.
