This invention relates to cartons for use in the distribution of various articles and is concerned more particularly with a novel carton, which is provided with a handle, so that it may beeasily carried. The new carrier carton is of simple construction and it includes side and end walls of uniform height, on which printed matter may be'placed. Initially, the handle is wholly within the'outlines of the carrier, so that a plurality of the loaded carriers may bestacked one upon another'to provide a display. When the handle of the carrier is grasped and pulled, the handle rises, until its upper end lies above the top of the walls in position to be easily gripped. The new carrier may be used to especial advantage in the packaging of such articles as a number of cans of beer to be sold as a unit, and a form of the carrier for that use will beillustrated and described for purposes'of explanation.
At the present time, it is the practice of breweries selling beer in cans to supply their retailers with cartons containing a plurality of cansf These cartons are of ordinary construction and are not provided with handles. cordingly, be stacked one upon another for ship-' ward to handle. Carriers with handles, such as are used in the distribution of bottled beverages, are easy to' handle but they cannot ordinarily be stacked; and thus occupy much space in shipmentand in the retail store. V
The present invention is directed to the'provisionof a carrier carton which overcomes the disadvantages, while retaining the advantages, of
both the beer cartons and bottle carriers referredto above. The new carrier is made of paperboard stock. and it includes side and end walls, a bottom, and 'a' longitudinal partition including two plies separated over a central area to receive a handle between them. The handle is made of paperboard, preferably of two plies, and initially it is-detachably connected to the partition and lies wholly below the-top of the walls with its upper end exposed in a cut-out in the partition. When the handle is grasped and pulled, it is easily detached at its original'connection to the partition and rises to engage the partition at a. higher level. The upper end of the handle, whichis provided with finger openings, then projects above the top of the carrier, where the handle can be easily gripped. Whenever the carrier is put down and the handle released, the handle drops or can be pushed down to its initial position, so that the carrier can be again stacked. 1
They can, ac-' 2g; receiving six cans, arranged in two rows of three ment and display, but they are bulky and awk- For a better understanding of the invention,"

H r V The carrier in the ,form shownis oi a size for each, and it is made ."from the blank shown in Fig. '7. 'I'he blank comprises a pair of like side walls Ill, ll, separated by a cut 12, and the side wall It) has like end walls l3, l4 attached thereto along creased lines [5, l6, respectively. Similarly, side wall H is attached to end Walls l1,. l8
along f creased wallsv I9, .20, respectively- End wall H is connected to a partition member 2| along a creased line 22, and end wall I8 is simi- 3g larlyconnected to a partition membe 8 9 8 a creased line 24. The partition members are alike and they are connected together along a creased line 25. A cut-out 26 is formed in the adjacent edges of members 2|, 23. 9s
handle member along a creased line 28, and end wall I! is similarly connected to a second-handle member 29 along a creased line 30. The handle members are connectedalong a. creased line 3t and part 32 ofa handle is connectedto handle member 2'! along ,a line 34, in which the stock is nearly completely severed. Part 33 of the handle,
is similarly connected to handle member 29 along a line35. Each handle part .is formed with a 60 pairof' shoulders 36 and-an extension 31 between the shoulders, the extension being provided with.
finger openings containing flaps '38, severed on The ends of the extensions 31: of;
three sides. parts 32, 33 are connected along a creasedaline 39.; A bottom wall 40 is connected to sidewall from which,
End wall I3 is connected ,to one part 21 of a ll along a creased line 4| and is subdivided by a transverse creased line 42. At the free end of the bottom wall, it is provided with a glue flap 43, connected to the bottom wall along a creased line 44.
In forming the carrier from the blank described, the blank is laid flat and glue is applied to the upper faces ofithehandle members 21, 29, a indicated by'the stippled area in Fig. 7.. The partition made of members 21, 23 is then folded inwardly on creased lines 22, 24 to overlie end walls l4, I8 and portions of side walls 10, l I. The assembly, comprising end walls 13, H, the handle members 21, 29, and the handle. parts 32; 33,,isthen folded inwardly on lines l; i9; 50 thatthee glued areas on the handle members overlie the upper face of the partition andsecure the parts together. This condition of the blank is illustrated in Fig. 8, in which it will be seen that the extensions 31 on thefhandle members lie in alignmentwith the cut-.out- 26-in the-partition.
When the parts have been folded as describeda. portion of the partition adjacent-lines 22, 24'isexposed beyond the edge-of the handle members and handle parts. Glue is now applied, as -indicatedbythe sitppled areas in Fig.8, over the upper surface of handle member 23, handle part 3,3,.and the exposed surface of, ply 23 of the partition. ,The. blank is then folded on lines 25, 3|,
and 39 and this results in the handle members 21, 29 :being secured. face to face. and the two parts 32, 33 of the handlebeing securedface-to face. Glue is..now applied to theupper surface ofglue flap-43. and the bottom-wall is folded'on its central creased line 42 to cause the gluer flap to.,overli e the upper face of side wall I0 vas-shown in Fig. 5. The carrier is now complete: and in collapsedmondition, and portionsfof the handle parts '32, 33. .adjacent the creased line exposed through cut-out 26.
When the. carrier is to, be. erected, .pressureis applied tothe ends formed by creasedv lines l5, I9 and 22, 24. As a result, the end walls l3-and I], which have beenlying, face to face, swing into. .edgewise.alignment, andend walls l4, I8 are similarly, -moved into the same. plane.

At this stage,the, top of the two-part-handle defined by creased line 39 lies. flush with, the. top of the, partition, defined by registering cut-outs extending downward from againstthesideof'the handle, sot hat the handle mayfbe readily grasped and the fingers' fprotectedj by the lines of folding of the flaps When the carrier is set down and the handle released,
the handle may be pushed backito its original position, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the filled carrierscan-be stacked one upon the other, without interference from the handle.
