4 Claims. 1
The invention relates to building constructions and refers more particularly to door and window frames or casings and the clips for anchoring the frames or casings.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an improved unit construction of frame and anchor clips which is fabricated in the factory instead of in the field and which may be compactly arranged for shipment.
The invention has for another object to provide an improved unit construction of frame and anchor clips which may be shipped without extra protection for the clips and with very little liability of damage to the clips.
The invention has for further objects to provide an improved unit construction embodying a frame member and an adjustable anchor clip to facilitate anchoring the frame member to various sizes and also various types of support members; and to provide an improved anchor clip which is designed to be located within the confines of the frame member to which it is attached and also to be bent at a selected one of a, plurality of predetermined points in its length for connection to one of a number of various support members.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of a building construction embodying the invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are cross sections on the lines 2-2 and 3-3, respectively, of Figure 1;
Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to portions of Figures 2 and 3, respectively, showing modiflcations;
Figure 6 is a sectional view through a frame member and anchor clip as fabricated in the factory:
Figure 7 is a plan view of one of th clips of Figure 6.
The invention relates in general to building constructions embodying door and window frames or casings, supports, and clips for anchoring the frames to the supports. While the anchor clips can be used with various makes of metal studding, or wood studding, forming the support, they are designed particularly for use with steel studding, known as Stran-Steel. As shown in Figure I particularly, the vertical supports or studs l and the horizontal support or head 2 form the studding to which is secured the door frame 3 having the vertical frame memanchor formed of these frame members.
2 bers or jambs 4 and the horizontal frame member or head 5.
The studs I are made in different standard sizes. As shown particularly in Figure 2, the studs are formed of the sheet steel channels 6 facing in opposite directions and having their webs I provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending corrugations. The webs are secured together in spaced relation with the corrugations nested. The channels have their flanges 8 formed with the holes 3 which are pre determinedly spaced longitudinally of the flanges. The studs of Figure 4 are narrower than those of Figure 2 and also differ in the. construction of their webs. More particularly, the studs of Figure 4 are formed of the oppositely facing sheet steel channels l0 having their webs H provided with single corrugations. The webs are secured together in spaced relation and one corrugation nests within the other. The channels also have their flanges I2 formed with longitudinally spaced holes 9' in the same manner as the flanges 8.
The frame jambs 4 of both Figures 2 and 4 have the same cross sections. They are preferably formed of sheet steel and are generally channel-shaped and have the coplanar terminal flanges 13 extending toward each other, the transverse end walls II and the wall l5, which latter is formed of the coplanar wall portions I6 connecting into the end walls I4 and the channel-shaped wall portion l1 substantially midway between the end walls I4. The space between the terminal flanges l 3 is greater than the width of the wider stud shown in Figure 2.
The heads 2 are also made in different standard sizes having the widths of the studs of Figures 2 and 4. As shown particularly in Figures 3 and 5, the heads areformed of the sheet steel channels l8 and [9, respectively, having the webs 2!] and 2| and the flanges 22 and 23. The web 211 of greater width than the web 2|, but the flanges 22 and 23 are alike witheach havingthe like holes '24 and 24' predeterminedly spaced longitudinally thereof.
The frame heads 5 have the same cross sections as the frame jambs 4.
For the purpose of anchoring the frame 3 to the supporting studding with its studs I and head 2 constructed as shown in Figures 2 and 3, or Figures 4 and 5, I have provided the anchor clips 25, preferably formed of sheet metal. These anchor clips are alike and are secured to and form a unit with the frame members and the: frame Each anchor 3 clip is formed of the generally rectangular strip 26 and has the end portion 2?, the longtiudinally extending slots 28, 29 and 39 substantially midway between its side edges and the ransverse pairs of notches 3| and 32 in its side edges. The end portion 21 is designed for attachment to the inside of one of the terminal flanges I3 of the frame jambs or head as by means of spot-welding. The slots 29 are designed to register with a hole 9 of the channel 5 opening away from the frame jamb and also with a hole 24 of the channel l8 while the slots 36 are designed to register with a hole 9 of the channel iii opening away i from the frame jamb and also with a hole 24' of 3 the channel [9. The notches 3i and SZ are designed to weaken the anchor clip strip at pre determined longitudinally spaced points to facilitate its bending end in this connection the slots 28 and 29 extend between the pairs of notches 3| and 32, respectively, to further weaken the strip so that it-may be readily bent by hand.
The anchor clips are preferably arranged. opposite each other with their end portions 2i predeterminedly spaced from the end walls M of either of the frame jambs of Figures 2 and 4, or of. either of the frame heads of Figures.3 and 5, to thereby predeterminedly position the notches 3i and 32 and also the slots 28, 29 and 39 with respect to these end walls. As a result, the strips may be bent either in the line of the pairs of notches 3| or the line of the notches 32. When bent in the line of the notches 31 they have portions extending transversely of the attaching end portions 27 and spaced to extend along the sides of the flanges ii of the supporting studs of a Figure 2' and along the sides-of the flanges 22 of the supporting head of Figure 3 with the slots ZSregistering with the holes 9 and 24 of the stud andv head, respectively, to, receive the screws 33 and 34 for securing the frame to the, studding. When the strips are bent in the line of the notches 32 they have portions extending transversely of the attaching end portions 2? and spaced apart a distance to extend along the sides of the flanges 12 of the supporting studs of Figure 4 and the flanges 23 of the supporting head of Figure 5 with'the slots 36 registering with the holes in these flanges for receiving the screws to secure the frame to the studding of narrower width.
The anchor'clips and frame form a unit construction fabricated in the factory, instead of in the field, andrthe anchor clips, as illustrated particularly in Figure 6, are flat and extend in the same plane withinthe confines of the frame members forming the frame so that the unit constructions may be compactly arranged for shipment and also may be shipped with very little liability of damage to the clips. By reason of predeterminedly positioning the anchor clips in the frame members and also predeterminedly positioning their weakened portions to facilitate bending theanchor clips are adapted to be readily used with various predetermined widths of support members.
What I claim as my invention is:
An elongated channel shaped frame having terminal flanges extending toward each other with the edges of such flanges spaced apart to define a centrally located space extending 1ongitudinally ofsaid frame, anchor means spaced longitudinally of said frame and housed completely within said frame for protection of said anchor means in shipment and handling of said frame prior to assembly into a building structure, said anchor means comprising flat strips at both sidesof said frame, each of said strips having a portion engaging the inner surface of one of said flanges and having a free end portion extending partly across the space between said flanges and located entirely within the confines of said frame, the extended end portions of said strips having transversely extending weakened zones to facilitate bending of said strips outwardly through the space between the edges of said flanges, said zones being located substantially equidistant from the edges of the adjacent flanges to locate portions of said strips equidistant from the sides of said frame when bent to extend outwardly through. the space between said flanges for attachment to supporting structure.
2. Structure as defined in claim 1 in which said 7 strips are arranged in pairs, the strips of each pair being disposed in substantial alignment transversely of said frame.
3. Structure as defined in claim 1 in which the extended end portion of each or. said strips is provided with a pair of transversely extending weakened zones, and the corresponding zones of said strips are located substantially equidistant from the edges of the adjacent flanges, whereby saidstrips may be bent outwardly through the space between said flanges along corresponding zones to provide outwardly bent portions equi- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
