HIS ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 26, 1952- COMBINATION NURSERY cnAm AND STEP-STOOL Charles T. De Puy, Brighton, N. Y., assignor to Trimble, Inc., Rochester, N. Y., a corporation O New York I g Application July 8, 1950, Serial M 2, 6 j l H g V soi'e'ims. (01. 4-254) I I T This invention relates to a combination nursery chair and step-stool and has for its purpose to provide a support that rests on the floor and straddles an adult toiletbowl in conjunction with an infant's toilet set that is positionable on the support above the toilet bowl. I
Various typesof infants toilet seats have been designed forattachment to an adult toilet seat but these have the objection that the infants seat sometimes'becomes accidentally displaced on the adult seat, also that the fastening devices which hold the infant's seat in place deface the paint, enamel or other coating or surface of the adult seat, and it is a particular purpose of the invention to afford a nursery chair with an infants toilet seat readily positionable above an adult toilet bowl without the necessity of fastening the infants seat on the adult seat, and which holds the infant securely and'safely, with no possibility of the child falling or the chair collapsing.
A more particular purpose of the invention is to afford a foldable support consisting of leg frames that straddle an'adult toilet bowl and extend thereabove, enabling the infants seat to be positioned above the toilet bowl, and providing a support that can be more easily positioned for use than when attached to the adult seat and also :readily and compactly folded-for storage when not in use or for transporting in an automobile or otherwise. I i I "Another object of the invention is to afford a step-stool including a suport with a plurality ofvertically spaced steps togetherwith a toilet seat and cover, the toilet seat being arranged'for positioning atone elevation above an adult toiletbowl for-:useby an infant or as a step-stool, and at another elevation where the toilet seat cover whenlowere'd affords a step-stool which enables a child to stand on the toilet seat cover between the arms of the support for convenient access to a An additional'object of the invention is to providea" foldable structure which can be economically manufactured and is of light weight, enabling readily folding the parts'for convenience in packing or carrying when not in use.
' To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear clearly from the following de scription' when read inconjunction with the ac-- companyingdrawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims .followingthe specifi cation. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in sideelevation showing one 55 support straddling a toilet bowlxiand the infants; toilet seat in its uppermost or operative position;
practical embodiment of the invention; with the in the positions illustrated in Figs. .1 and-'2; I

Fig.6 is a similar view with the toilet s eat in its uppermost position and the cover lowered for use as a step-stool, the cover serving as a third step Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on line ofFig.2,and
Fig. 8 is a side elevation showing the position of the parts when folded; J H Thepurposes of the device may be. attained with various structures ofwhich the one herein illustrated-is a practicalexample, and referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, the support shown includes a generally U-shaped-front leg frame'of tubular or cylindrical aluminum or other metal j metal stock .and including legs .6 and 1 and." aconnecting top portion 8. The front and rear legs I, 2, 6 and l are so spaced as to straddle an; adult toilet bowl, and extend above the bowl; to enable positioning an infant's seat thereabove.
9 and I l designate togglebars arranged on both sides of the leg frames connecting the fIontQand' I rear legs, each toggle bar 9 being connected to a" f'rameszin various ways and in the embodiment illustratedthere is provided-a bail thatincludes" end portions [5 pivotally supported in openings in "the rea'r legs G an'd Twhile 'lt desi'gnates' an oflset i central portion of-the l bail on whichis zimounted'the infants toilet seat and toilet- "seat;
front leg, each toggle bar H being connected to a'f rear leg, and the toggle bars beingpivotally connected to each other at I2, while I3 designates an angle plate secured to each forward toggle bar 9 and engageable with the connected rear toggle bar H to limit their downward movemente'and" retain the toggle bars in horizontal relatio'nQ 'as 7 shown in Fig.v 1, while permitting them to-fold upwardly when the support is folded or 'collapsedfi Each forward toggle bar 9 is provided with a recess or notch 14 .to receive and support the toilet seat when in its lowermost positionas'will 'be 7 described more fully presently. 1 I I I The toilet seat may be supported'on the le At its forward portion, the toilet se at l'l is. provided on its underside with a transversely extending rod 23, see Figs. 2 and 4, attached in any suitable manner as by inetallclips -24',".and H V 'canstep fr m the-fioor onto step 28, thence on the rod 23 extends laterally beyond the seat su'f-' ficiently to engage supporting devices and to retain the seat at either of its two elevations; When;
in its uppermost position above the adulttoilet bowl, the rod 23 engages and rests in brackets"25 that are attached to the-front legs I and 2, the heads 26 at the tends of' rod '23acting to prevent lateralidisplacernentof.the rod from the brackets 25 -and' thus'to-retainxthe toilet seat inits uppermost position where it .is' supported at'its r'e'ar by 'the pivotedlbail already described, as s'lriown i'n -Figs l 'and fi. 'With the. toilet'seat in this pos'iti'on',""the cover22 can be elevated and the device is ready for use byan infant in' con-- junction with 'an adult toilet bowl The seat I! is also provided on its underside with suitable cleats or supportingiplatesil to'receive .detach-= able chamber if desirable, and when the cover22 is lowered Sto the? positionillustrated I in Fig. 6, the device may be used as a step-stoolathecover. zt'r'serringas 'aiitopis'tepsfor standing thereon.
In order to accomplish. the purpose of "a step-- stool; there are :provided two :vertically spaced steps -betweenithe front -:legs .I and v2, the: lowermost istep being indicated at 1-28 and having at taclied theretmmetal: clipsf 2 9 which support the steptandare secured to the sides of thezfront legs; .Theclips .29 have-lugs 3| struck therefrom tmengage 'thefront surfaces of the legs andhold the step.rigidlyattached to the legs, while 32 designates the upper step that has metal clips 33f.=secured thereto, The metal-clips 33are provided' with curved or bent portions '34 which embrace'f'the curved surfaces of the legs and are lie'ld-inplaceby fasteningb'olts 35 secured'to the'front legs,.wliile '36-; designate thumb nuts engaging therbolts 35 and'a-cting. when tightened torhold ,the curved portions :34 1 of the 1 plates in position :to :embrace the curved surfaces of the front. legs-:andxthus hold-the upper: step i32 at arr angular' or inclinedgposition, as shown in Figial inffull'linesto support the feetiof. an infant when occupying the toilet seat.
