APPARATUS FOR INCREASING THE BULK DENSITY 0F PULVERULENT MATERIALS Filed March .20, 1950 Hans pokse @9- amp/1.9
Patented Aug. 19, 1952 APPARATUS FOR INCREASING THE HULK DENSITY OF PULVERULENT MATERIALS Hans Dohsc, Bonn-Ippendorf, Germany Application March 20, 1950, Serial No. 150,635 In Germany August 8, 1949 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to apparatus for increasing the bulk density of pulverulent materials.
The bulk density of pulverulent materials, for example, of carbon black or alumina gel is determined by the gas volume, that is to say, by the air entrapped by the particles of the material, which is often a multiple of the volume of the solids. Materials of low bulk density therefore occupy in comparison to their specific gravity disproportionately large spaces. This means that such substances require large amounts of packaging material as well as considerable space for storage and transport. The large volume also produces difliculties in the processing of such materials, for example, in the intermixing thereof with other substances.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the disadvantages which are caused by the low bulk density of such and similar materials and which appear particularly in the packaging, transport and processing thereof. This object is realized, according to the invention, by subjecting the pulverulent material to a vacuum and to mechanical pressure tor the removal of the occluded air. 7
An example of the invention is shown in the accompanying single drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, numeral 21 designates a cylinder which is filled with the material 28 to be treated. There are two pistons 29 and 30 provided which are guided within the cylinder at the opposite ends thereof. On the inner sides of the pistons are disposed filter plates 3| and 32, furnishing seals for the material in the cylinder. The air is withdrawn by a vacuum pump 38 from the space in the cylinder 21 between the filter plates 3! and 32 through the passages 33 and 34 provided in the pistons 29 and 39. Each piston is connected with a flexible hose, as indicated at 35 and 3B. The hose 35 and 36 terminate in the vacuum pump 38 which has an exhaust 31. The double arrows indicated at 39 and 40 designate suitable means for pushing the pistons 29 and 39 toward each other and away from each other, respectively.
What I claim is:
1. Apparatus for treating pulverulent material to increase the bulk density thereof comprising means forming a cylinder for receiving the material which is to be treated, said cylinder being open at both ends, and two pistons one guided from each end of said cylinder, each piston having a passage therethrough for connecting to a vacuum pump the portion of the interior of said cylinder between said pistons.
2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 in which a filter plate is disposed on the inner side of each of said pistons to provide a seal between the corresponding piston and said cylinder.
HANS DOHSE.
