What I claim is:
l. A machine of the character described having a receptacle providing an upper washing space and a communicating lower trough for liquid, the wall of said trough being formed to provide an open sump located below and extending laterally toward one side of said-trough, an impeller rotatably mounted axially in said trough, the axis of said impeller being substantially horizontal, a drain passage located below said trough and terminating in a drain port opening laterally and axially into one side of said sump below said impeller, the adjacent portion of said passage extending laterally from said porttoward the other side of said trough, the bottom wall of said sump in front of said port being substantially flat and, horizontal, and means for turning said impeller in a predetermined direction to discharge liquid across and away from said port and upwardly thereafter into said Washing space, the portion of said passage adjacent to said port extending in a direction substantially opposite that of the fiow of said discharged liquid whereby the flow of the discharged liquid opposes fiow of liquid from the receptacle through said port and said passage.
2. A machine as set forth in claim 1 in which thebottom wall of said sump curves upwardly from the substantially fiat portion to merge with the side Wall of the trough.

In a machine of the character described having a receptacle for receiving articles to be washed, a substantially horizontal, trough disposed below saidreceptacle, said trough having spaced side and end walls and ,a concavely curved bottom wall, said trough being in open communication with said receptacle, a bladed impeller disposed in said trough and mounted for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis, the lower portion-of the envelope of said impeller being adjacent the inner surface of, said bottom wall, means for rotating said impeller in a predetermined direction to circulate liquid in said trough upwardly along one side wall and into said receptacle to wash said articles and downwardly from'said receptacle along the opposite side wall, drainage means for said trough and said receptacle comprising a generally rectangular sump in the bottom of said trough, said sump having spaced end walls, a bottom wall and a curved side wall, said curved side wall merging into said bottomwall and the first mentioned side wall of said trough, the major portion of said sump being disposed at one side of the vertical center line of said trough in the direction of fiow of liquid caused by the rotation of said impeller, the bottom wall of said trough terminating in a lip above the bottom wall of said sump in, overlapping relation thereto and short of the first mentioned side wall to provide a drain passage outside of but tangential to the envelope of said impeller and opening toward said curved side wall whereby upon rotation of said impeller in said predetermined direction liquid will flow over said lip and into said sump away from said. drain passage to oppose thev counter fiow of liquid from said trough into said sump and drain passage and when said impeller is at rest liquid may freely fiow into. said sump and said drain passage. In a machine of the character described, a substantially horizontal trough for receiving liquid, said trough having spaced side and end walls and a concavely curved bottom Wall, a bladed impeller disposed in said trough and mounted for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis, the lower portion of the envelope of said impeller being adjacent the inner surface of said bottom wall, means for rotating said impeller in a predetermined direction to circulate liquid in said trough upwardly along one side wall and downwardly along the opposite side wall, drainage means for said trough comprising a sump in the bottom of said trough, said sump having a bottom wall and a side wall, said side wall merging into said bottom wall and the first mentioned side Wall of said trough, the major portion of said sump being disposed at one side of the vertical center line of said trough in the direction of flow of liquid caused by the rotation of said impeller, the bottom wall of said trough terminating in a lip above the bottom wall of said sump in overlapping relation thereto and short of the first mentioned side wall to provide a drain passage outside of but tangential to the envelope of said impeller and opening toward said curved side wall whereby upon rotation of said impeller in said predetermined direction liquid will flow over said lip and into said sump away from said drain passage to oppose the counter flow of liquid from said trough into said sump and drain passage and when said impeller is at rest liquid may freely flow into said sump and said drain passage.

In a machine of the character described a substantially horizontal trough for receiving liquid, said trough having a concavely curved bottom wall, a bladed impeller disposed in said trough and mounted for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis, the lower portion of the envelope of said impeller being adjacent the inner surface of said bottom wall, means for rotating said impeller in a predetermined direction to circulate liquid in said trough upwardly along one side of said bottom wall and downwardly along the opposite side, drainage means for said trough comprising a sump in the bottom of said wall, said sump having a bottom wall and end walls, the bottom wall of said trough terminating in a lip above the bottom wall of said sump short of the first mentioned side of the bottom wall of said trough to provide a substantially vertical drain port below the envelope of said impeller, said impeller being so disposed axially relative to the bottom and end walls of said sump that upon rotation of said impeller in said predetermined direction liquid will be discharged over said lip and into said sump away from said drain port to oppose the gravity flow of liquid from said trough into said sump and through said drain port.

In a machine of the character described a substantially horizontal trough for receiving liquid, said trough having a concavely curved bottom wall, a bladed impeller disposed in said trough and mounted for rotation about a substantially horizontal axis, the lower portion of the envelope of said impeller being adjacent the inner surface of said bottom wall, means for rotating said impeller in a predetermined direction to circulate liquid in said trough upwardly along one side of said bottom wall and downwardly along the opposite side, drainage means for said trough comprising a sump in the bottom of said wall, said sump having a bottom wall and end walls, the bottom wall of said trough terminating in a lip above the bottom wall of said sump short of the first mentioned side of the bottom wall of said trough to provide a substantially vertical drain port below the envelope of said impeller, said impeller having at least one blade disposed over said sump and extending over at least the whole axial extent of said sump whereby upon rotation of said impeller in said predetermined direction liquid will be discharged over said lip and into said sump away from said drain port to oppose the gravity flow of liquid from said trough into said sump and through said drain port.

ing a receptacle providing an upper washing space and a communicating lower horizontal trough for liquid, said trough having a concavely curved bottom wall, a bladed impeller disposed in said trough and extending axially over the major portion of said trough, said impeller beingrmounted for rotation about a substantially; horizontal axis, the lower portion of the envelope of said impeller being adjacent said bottom wall, drainage means for said trough comprising a sump. located below said trough and terminating in a substantially vertical drain port opening laterally into said bottom wall below the lower por-' tion of said envelope, the axial extension of said sump being substantially less than that of saidimpellerand means for rotating said impeller-in a predetermined direction to discharge liquid acrossarid away from said port and upwardly thereafter into said washing space whereby the flow of the discharged liquid opposes the gravity flow of liquid through said port.
