Description
June 10, 1952 E. POSTEL REMOVABLE JEWEL EARRING Filed Jan. 5, 1950 INVENTOR. Emu/W0 P05 TEL ATTO/Q/YEY Patented June 10, 1 952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a replaceable jewel for jewelry, and has for its principal object the provision of a simple and efficient construction whereby jewels of various colors may be interchanged in an earring of pin jewelry mounting to suit costumes of various colors.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the interchangeable features of the invention that no tools of any kind will be necessary for removing or replacing the jewels, and which will insure the jewel against loss.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efliciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a, face view of a cluster-type, pierceless earring mounting in which the invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the mounting with the removable jewel removed;
Fig. 3 illustrates the removable jewel independent of the mounting of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, vertical section, taken on the line 4-4., Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a still further enlarged front view of a removable jewel cup employed in the invention, with the jewel removed;
Fig. 6 is a side view of the removable jewel cup; and
Fig. '7 is a rear view thereof.
In the drawing, the removable jewel feature of the invention has been illustrated embodied in a pierce-less type earring. This is simply illustrative of the invention, since the same construction could be used in any piece of jewelry where it is desired to quickly remove and interchange jewels.
In the embodiment illustrated, an annular cluster plate I0 is mounted in a bezel plate II by rolling the peripheral edge of the latter over the edge of the cluster plate. The bezel plate II is provided with the usual U-shaped ear bow I2 and ear clamp screw 13.
The cluster plate 10, as illustrated, carries a plurality of small cluster jewels M. The central portion of thecluster plate I0 is provided with a round opening 22, the peripheral edge of which is rolled back to form a rounded, inwardly extending, peripheral bead 15. The improved removable jewel is designed to be positioned in the opening 22 in the cluster plate I0 and be retained in place therein by means of the peripheral bead I5.
A removable jewel, such as illustrated at 16, is
mounted in a conical jewel cup ll by means of the usual stone-retaining prongs I8. Opposite sides of the cup I! are slotted, as shown at l9. The material from the slots is bent rearwardly and outwardly from the cup to form resilient retaining tongues 20. The tongues 20 are curved so as to form arcuate sockets 2| therein for receiving the rounded peripheral bead [5 of the opening 22.
To place the jewel in position, it is only necessary to press it into the central opening 22 of the cluster plate I0. The extremities of the tongues 20 are turned inwardly so that they will readily enter, engage and slide around the opening 22 and be pressed inwardly by the edges thereof until the bead reaches the arcuate notches 2! in the tongues, allowing the tongues to snap outwardly to securely hold the jewel cup and the jewel in place.
To remove the jewel, it is only necessary to engage the projecting edge of the cup I! with the finger nails and pull it outwardly to disengage the resilient tongues 20 from the peripheral bead 15.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
A removable jewel mounting comprising: a plate having a jewel-receiving opening formed therein; an inwardly rounded, peripheral edge about said opening; a conical jewel cup having its apex extending inwardly through said opening and its periphery resting against the peripheral edge of said opening, there being U-shaped cuts in opposite sides of the conical surface of said conical jewel cup between the apex and the periphery of said cup and forming radial openings therein; and resilient tongues formed from the material of said cup by the U-shaped cuts therein, said tongues being attached to said cup adjacent the periphery thereof and extending over the radial openings therein and projecting from the conical surface of said cup, said tongues resiliently engaging the curved surface of the rounded edge of said jewel-receiving opening for retaining said cup in place therein.
