This invention relates to an improved construction of sewing box adapted to replace the conventional sewing basket or other container or box, such as those provided with drawers and which are used for holding thread, needles and other ar ticles and implements used in sewing.

More particularly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a sewing box of a compact character composed of a plurality of sections connected in a manner to permit them to be readily extended to afford access to any of the sections of the box so that all the implements, tools and articles employed in sewing will be readily available to the user.

A further object of the invention is to provide a box for sewing in which the individual sections are provided with separate compartments or other means for effectively maintaining sewing implements and articles in a neat, orderly and readily available manner.

Still a further aim of the invention is to provide a box which may be readily opened for exposing substantially the entire contents thereof and which may be quickly and easily closed without disrupting or disturbing the contents of any section of the box.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment theerof, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the box in a closed position;

Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by' the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing portions of the cover members broken away;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the box on an enlarged scale taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2 and showing one half of the box in an extended, open position;

Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 55 of Figure 3;

Figure 6 is a top plan view of one of the intermediate sections of the box, and

Figure '7 is a top plan view, partly in section and partly broken away showing an insert of one of the topsectlons of the box and in an inverted position.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, a

(01. 223-107) novel sewing box in its entirety which comprises the invention is designated generally I2 and includes a bottom portion, designated generally I3 composed of corresponding sections I4 and I5 having a common bottom I6, common side walls I! and individual end walls I8. The sections I4 and I5 are separated by a transverse partition I3 located intermediate of said end walls I8 and parallel thereto.

The box I2 also includes two intermediate sections 20 and 2| which are superimposed on the sections I4 and I5, respectively, when the box is in a closed position, and two top sections 22 and 23 which are superimposed on the sections 20 and 2I, respectively, also when in closed position and so that said top sections form top walls or covers for the intermediate sections while the latter similarly function with respect to the bottom sections, over which they are disposed.

The intermediate section 20 is connected to the bottom section I4 by means of a link 24 which is pivotally connected at its lower end at 25 to the outer side of one of the side walls I4 and pivotally connected at its upper end at 26 to the outer side of the corresponding side wall of said section 20. One end of a link 21 is pivotally connected at its lower end at 28 to the aforementioned side wall I4 in longitudinally spaced relationship to the pivot point 25 and adjacent the end wall I8 of said bottom section I4 and said link is pivotally connected intermediate of its ends at 28 to the intermediate portion of the aforementioned side wall of the section 20 and in longitudinally spaced relationship to the pivot point 26. The upper end of the link 21 is pivotally connected at 30 to the corresponding side wall of the upper section 22. A link 3| is pivotally connected at 32 adjacent one end thereof to the aforementioned side wall of the section 20 and adjacent the outer end thereof and has its opposite end pivotally connected at 33 to the intermediate portion of the aforementioned side wall of the section 22. The sections I5, H and 23 are connected in the same manner by a corresponding set of links 24, 2! and 3| and the opposite side walls of the box sections are likewise connected in the same manner by sets of link 24, 21 and 3|. A bail-like handle 34 is provided with relatively long ends or legs which are secured adjacent their terminals by fastenings 35 to the side walls II at the juncture of the base sections I4 and I5 and said legs of the bail or handle 34 extend upwardly therefrom in parallel relationship and so that the intermediate or grip portion of the handle is disposed substantially above the the like.

It will thus be readily apparent that each of the rods 60 is adapted to support a spool in each of the compartments 58 so that the four rods 60 will support a total of sixteen spools in the four compartments. As

if desired, be partially utilized for needles and J other sewing implements.

The upper; compartment 22. is provided with a plurality of transversely extending partitions 45 forming a plurality of upwardly opening chambers or compartments 46 normally closed by a false lid .01: cover 41 which is common to all of said chambers or compartments 46 and which is hingedv along one longitudinal edge thereof as seen at 48' in Figure 5 to one of the-side walls-of the section 22 and beneath the open top thereof.

The false lid 41 is then closed so that the ends ofthe skeins, extending through said openings 49, will lie upon the upper surface of the lid 41 and will be covered by the lid 5!, when the latter is closed. With thelid 5i opened the thread or yarn from any one ofthe skeins may be readily withdrawn through the opening 49 through which the end thereof extends thus enabling the skeins to be maintained in a neat and orderly manner for permitting the thread or yarn to be' removed therefrom without removal of the skeins fromthe compartment 46.

The other top compartment 23 contains an insert, designated generally 53 having a topwall 54, depending side walls 55 and depending end walls 56. The insert '53 is also provided with equally spaced depending partitions 51 which are disposedtransversely thereof and which form a plurality of compartments 58. The partitions 51 and end walls 56 are provided with aligned openings 59 to detachably receive a plurality of rods 3 5B which extend longitudinally of said insert 58 and which are laterally spaced from one. another, as best illustrated in Figure 4. Said rods 60 are removable when the insert 53 is removed from the section 23 so that said rods can be 63therefrom is adapted to be extended upwardly through the complementary opening 62 and so as to be available above the top wall 54 to enable the user to withdraw any thread or yarn desired from the spool on which it i Wound and through the opening 62 through which it extends.

The. top, wall 54, adjacent each end thereof, is 7 provided with a tab 64 by means of which the insert 53 may be manually lifted out of engagement with the box section 23. As clearly illustratect in Figure 3 the end walls of the section 23 will efiectivelyfunction to retain the rods 68 properly positioned: in the openings 59 and to prevent said rods from sliding longitudinally in the insert 53 while said insert is in its applied position. The section 23; is provided with a cover 64, corresponding to the cover 5| and connected to the outer; end wall thereof by hinges 65 and which normally overlies the insert 53.

From the-preceding description it will be readily apparent that the intermediate and top sections may be disposed in superimposed relationship as illustrated in Figure 1 ormay be moved to extended positions, as illustrated in Figure 3 by means of the supporting linkage 24, 21 and 3! and when extended the bottom, intermediate and the top sections thereof will all be readily accessible to the user. To facilitate the extending of the sections and the opening of the lids 5i and 6.4; said lids, adjacent their inner ends, are provided with knobs; 56.

In view of the preceding detailed description of the construction and operation of the sewing box I2 a further description thereof isconsidered unnecessary. Obviously, if desired, thebox I2 could be used for other purposes than as a container for sewing articles and implements and various other modifications and changes are likewise contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing; from; the. spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.

I claim as y invention:

1 The combination with a sewing box having an open top, of an insert for the box'including a top wall, depending side and end walls and a plurality of; depending partitions forming a unit removably receivable in said box, said top wall having a plurality of apertures communicating with the compartments for-med by the side and end walls and partitions, said end walls'and partitions being provided with a plurality of aligned openings, and a plurality of rods extending through said aligned openings andeach adapted to support a plurality ofspools of thread, one within each of said compartments, said apertures being adapted to form passageways for the thread from said spools whereby'the thread can be drawn 01f of the spools while the unit is applied to the box. 7

having a plurality of apertures communicating with the compartments formed by the side and end walls and partitions, said end Walls and partitions being provided with a plurality of aligned openings, and a plurality of rods extending through said aligned openings and each adapted to support a plurality of spools of thread, one within each of said compartments, said apertures being adapted to form passageways for the thread from said spools whereby the thread can be drawn oil of the spools while the unit is applied to the box, certain of the box walls forming means for retaining the rods in applied positions when the unit is disposed in the box.

3. The combination with a sewing box having an open top, of an insert for the box including a top Wall, depending side and end walls and a plurality of depending partitions forming a unit removably receivable in said box, said top wall having a pluralityof apertures communicating with the compartments formed by the side and end walls and partitions, said end walls and partitions being provided with a plurality of aligned openings, and a plurality of rods extending through said aligned openings and each adapted to support a plurality of spools of thread, one within each of said compartments, said apertures being adapted to form passageways for the thread from said spools whereby the thread can be drawn off of the spools while the unit is applied to the box, and a hinged cover normally closing the open top of said box above said unit.

4. The combination with a sewing box having an open top, of an insert for the box including a top wall, depending side and end walls and a plurality of depending partitions forming a unit removably receivable in said box, said top wall having a plurality of apertures communicating with the compartments formed by the side and end walls and partitions, said end walls and partitions being provided with a plurality of aligned openings, and a plurality of rods extending through said aligned openings and each adapted to support a plurality of spools of thread, one within each of said compartments, said apertures being adapted to form passageways for the thread from said spools whereby the thread can be drawn off of the spools while the unit is applied to the box, and means for facilitating the removal of said unit from said box.
