STAVE-J'OINTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN K. DERBY, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for J ointing Staves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line x, Fig. 3. Fig. 2, is a front View of ditto. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto.

The obj ect of this invention is to obtain a machine for jointing staves that may be ad justed to suit staves for various sized casks.
The invention consists in the employment or use of two conical cutter heads provided with cutters peculiarly arranged and fitted to frames connected by a joint so that the cutter heads may be placed more or less angularly with each other and the desired object attained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, A, represent two frames which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts of the machine. These two frames A, A, are connected at one side by joints or hinges a, a, and the opposite sides have plates b, and set screws c, or other equivalent device by which the two frames A, A, may be secured more or less angularly or obliquely with each other as occasion may require.
On each frame A, there is placed a conical cutter head B, the inner ends of which are provided with teeth (Z, which gear into each other. Each cutter head B, has a spiral groove e, made in it. These grooves are formed in reversed positions in the cutter heads and one or more may be used in each cutter head. Directly by the side of each groove e, a knife C, is attached and secured to the heads B, B, by bolts or screws f. The knives C, are curved spirally corresponding to the form of theA grooves e, e, which serve as throats for the knives to allow the shavings to pass out, the knives being at their inner sides.
On the axis of one of the heads B, a driving pulley D, is placed and the upper horizontal traverse pieces g, g, of the frames A, A, serve as beds to receive the staves to 25,956, dated November 1, 1859.

The operation is as follows :-The staves shown in red are placed one at a time on the traverse pieces g, g, the frames A, A, and cutter heads B, B, being adjusted more or less angularly with each other according to the bilge desired to be given the staves, the teeth (Z, of the heads admitting of such adjustment and still keeping in gear. The staves owing to the position of the knives C, C, cut from the center of the stave outward or toward its ends and therefore a smooth clean cut is insured in consequence of the knives not cutting against the grain of the wood which would be the case if the knives on both heads were in the same position. The shavings as they are cut roll up in scroll form and pass out from the grooves c, c, the action of the knives having a tendency to force the shavings out from the grooves and they fall from the machine without being an obstruction in any degree or interfering with the proper' action of the knives or any working parts of the machine. The staves may be held to the cutter heads by any suitable clamp. One or more knives may be attached to each cutter head.
I do not confine myself 'to the teeth CZ, on the inner ends of the cutter heads for the purpose of causing the two cutter heads to be rotated simultaneously for the axes of the cutter heads might be connected by a universal compensating joint which would answer a good purpose but, the teeth d, are more simple and therefore would be pref erable.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. The employment or use of two conical cutter heads B, B, provided with suitable knives C, connected by teeth (l, or other means so as to insure a simultaneous rotation, and placed on frames A, A, connected by hinges or oints a, a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The attaching` of the knives C, C, to the cutter heads B, B, in reverse positions so that they will cut from the centers of the staves outward for` the purpose specified.
