Description
MATTRESS HANDLE ASSEMBLY Filed 001;. 20, 1949 I r I h r, u 2
Patented May 6, 1952 Michael Bechik, St. Paul, Minn, assignor to Bechik Products, Inc., St. Paul,-Minn., a corporation of Minnesota Application October 20, 1949, Serial N 0. 122,442
My present invention relates generally to mattress handle assemblies and, more particularly, to means for coupling a mattress handle to the border wires of inner spring mattresses and the like.
An important object of my invention is the pro vision of means for securing a mattress handle to the side wall of a mattress, whereby lifting strains applied to the handle are transferred to the border wires of the spring construction within the mattress.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an elongated flexible handle member having its opposite end portions extending through spaced openings in the side wall of a mattress, and link means extending between the opposite ends of said handle and the border wires of the mattress, said link means being resilient whereby to maintain the handle in a taut condition along the outside of the mattress wall.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a pair of spaced washers, grommet means for securing the washers to the inner wall of a mattress and providing means of entry for the opposite end portions of a mattress handle to the interior of the mattress, and link members secured to the mattress and to the border wires of the mattress.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a mattress handle assembly as set forth, which is inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, and efficient and durable in use.
Other important objects and advantagesof .my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims, and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a mattress of the inner spring type containing my novel handle assembly;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of a side wall of the mattress of Fig. 1, illustrating the mounting of my novel handle assembly thereto and to the border wires of the mattress.
Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, an inner spring mattress is indicated by the numeral I and comprises top and bottom sections 2 and 3 respectively and a side wall section 4. The conventional border wires and coil compression springs are shown fragmentarily in 3 Claims. (Cl. 5345) Fig. 3, and are indicated by the numerals 5 and 8 respectively. The mattress construction thus far described is of conventional inner spring construction and further detailed description and showing thereof is deemed unnecessary.
A plurality of handles I, one of which is shown, have their opposite end portions projecting through spaced grommets 8 to the interior of the mattress I. As shown, each grommet 8 extends through the side wall section 4 and a washer 9. The inner ends of the grommets 8 are peened or upset to rigidly secure the washers 9 to the inner side wall of the mattress. Each handle I is made preferably of flexible cord and has its opposite ends secured in anchoring members Ii] provided with anchoring barbs II. The barbs I I permit insertion of the anchoring members Ill inwardly through the grommets 8, and engagement thereof with the washers 9 prevents outward movement through the grommets 8.
Each of the washers 9 is provided with integrally-formed hook lugs I2 in spaced parallel relation and which are adapted to extend horizontally within the mattress I. A pair of generally U-shaped link members I3 are provided with opposed hooks I4, each of which have interlocking pivotal engagement with one of the hook lugs I2 on each of a pair of cooperating washers 9. The intermediate portion of each of the link members I3 is pivotally secured to one of the border wires 5 by means of tie rings or the like [5. hooks M with their cooperating hook lugs I2 and the connection between the intermediate portion of the link members l3 and their cooperating border wires 5 permits free flexing of the side wall section 4 when the mattress is compressed adjacent the edges thereof, in addition to providing a rigid connection between the grommets 8 and washers 9 and the border wires 5 when lifting pressure is applied to the handle I. The link members I3 are preferably made from resilient wire which is sufficiently heavy to maintain the handle I in a taut condition along the outer surface of the side section 5. However, the resilience of the link members I3 permits limited movement of the washers 9 toward each other, under longitudinal flexing of the side wall section 4 therebetween for the removal of the handle I and replacement thereof, when desired. Normally the handle I remains in place until replacement thereof is required due to Wear or damage.
My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be wholly adequate for the accomplishment of the objectives set forth; and, while I have The pivotal connection between the shown a commercial embodiment of my novel device, it will be understood that the same is capable of modification without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, an elongated handle member, means including a pair of washers adapted to be secured in spaced relation along the inside of a mattress Wall for securing said handle member in a generally horizontal position along the outside of said wall, opposed hook lugs carried by said washers, and a pair of resilient U-shaped link members adapted to be pivotally secured one each to the upper and lower border wires of said mattress in opposed relation, the free ends of said link members having interlocking pivotal engagement one each with one of said hook lugs.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of washers adapted to be secured in spaced relation along the inside of a mattress wall, an elongated handle member adapted to overlie the outer wall of said mattress in a generally horizontal plane and with its free ends in operative engagement with said washers, said washers being provided with opposed hook lugs, and a pair of resilient generally U-shaped link members adapted to have their intermediate portions pivotally secured one each to the upper and lower border wires of said mattress, the free ends of said link members being formed to provide opposed hooks which have interlocking pivotal engagement one each with an adjacent one of said hook lugs.
3. A handle assembly for inner spring mattresses comprising a pair of grommets secured to the intermediate portion of the side wall of said mattress in spaced relation, enlarged washer means secured by said grommets to the inside of said wall, a pair of opposed resilient generally U-shaped link members having their opposite ends secured to said washer means on opposite sides of said grommets, means interlocking the intermediate portions of said link members with a portion of the frame of said inner spring mattress for pivotal movements with respect thereto, a flexible handle extending along the outside of said mattress with its free ends projecting through said grommets, and anchoring means on the inside of said mattress wall normally stretching said handle taut along the outside thereof.
