Application December 2, 1949, Serial No. 130,747
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to toe coverings and method for making the same and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the invention comprises a toe covering which is adapted to be worn over the toes of a wearer either beneath the wearers hose to save wear and tear upon the hose or to be worn without stockings. The invention also relates to a method of making the toe coverings.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efflcient in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel method for making the above described device.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a method of manufacturing devices of the character set forth which method is capable of economically utilizing a material which is easily obtainable, namely tubing of knit hosiery material such as silk, rayon or the like.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of tubing with certain stitching forming a part of the present invention placed therein,
Figure 2 is a plan view with a portion of such tubing cut away to form the body of a single toe covering in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2, I
Figure 5 is a perspective view, partly broken away, illustrating the manner of completing the formation of a toe covering in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line 88 of Figure 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a substantially continuous piece 01 tubing I0 formed of knit hosiery material such as rayon. silk or the like and provided with a circumferentially extending line of marking ll adjacent one end thereof and thereafter, in spaced relation to the line I I, successive pairs of adjacently spaced like lines of marking l2 and I3, I4 and I5, et cetera.
It will be seen that the lines II and I2 define 2 therebetween a panel [6 and that the lines 13 and I4 define therebetween a panel ll. Likewise the line l5 and a line l8 which is similar to the lines l2 and I4 defines therebetween a panel [9.
The panel 16 is divided into two equal parts by means of a pair of parallel lines of machine stitching 20 which extend from a point inwardly of one edge of the tubing I0 and adjacent the line ll to a point inwardly of the other edge of the tubing Ill and adjacent to the lines [2 and 13.
A pair of adjacent diagonally extending lines of stitching 2| which adjoin the lines of stitching 20 extend diagonally in the opposite direction and in the same manner to a point or points adjacent the lines l4 and I5 and thence continue again in an opposite direction upon the panel 19, as indicated at 22 in Figure 1 and 23 in Figure 2.
When the stitching 20, 2|, 22 and 23 has been placed in the tubing Ill in the manner aforesaid. the tubing is then cut between the lines of stitching 20, between the lines of stitching 2| and between the lines of stitching 22 and 23. It is also cut parallel with regard to the edge of the tubing between the rings I2 and I3 and between the rings I4 and I5, et cetera to form sections such as is shown, for example in Figure 2. Each of such sections is then folded into position substantially shown in Figure 5 so that the stitched side 23 thereof lies longitudinally and centrally along the bottom thereof. The opening in the tubing l0 defined between the stitched edge 23 and by the beading I8 is then stitched by machine or otherwise perpendicularly to the line of stitch: ing 23, as indicated at 24. Thereafter the device is turned inside out as shown in Figure 5 and in Figure 6 and is ready to be worn as shown in Figure 6 either with or without stockings.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The method of making toe coverings com prising first forming spaced pairs of circumferentially extending markings in a tubing of hosiery material to form panels of double thickness therein, next running a pair of spaced diagonally extending lines of stitching through each panel edge at points spaced from each corner thereof, then cutting said tubing between the markings and between the lines of stitching to form sections,
next laying out the sections thus formed with 3 the stitched portion centrally disposed, then sewing the smaller marked end perpendicularly to the centrally disposed stitching, and finally reversing the item thus formed.
2. The method as in claim 1 further characterized by the forming of said diagonal lines of stitching in a continuous manner throughout the length of said tubing prior to,the cutting operation.
