Application Ju1y'19, 1948', Serial No. 39,522
- 3 Claims. (01., 4-240) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clips or clamps, and the primary object of the present invention'is to provide a locking device for the anchoring bolt of a toilet seat hinge that may be quickly and readily applied to or'removed from the bolt in a convenient manner.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a pair of jaw members and embodying novel and improved cam means for actuating said jaw members into a locked position for gripping the outer periphery of a bolt or the like.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for the anchoring bolt of a toilet seat hinge that is extremely small and compactin structure and which is conveniently manipulated to effect a releasing thereof so that the hinge bolt may be disengaged from a toilet bowl.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a cam operated clamp that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational View of a water closet structure, and showing the present invention applied thereto in use;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the present cam operated clamp, showing the cam is a locked position, and with dotted line showing the cam in an open or unlocked position; and a Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the present invention taken substantially in the direction of arrow 3 in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l represents the present cam actuated clamp or clip generally, including a pair of semi-cylindrical jaws or clamping members l2 and I4 having outwardly flared end portions I 6 and I8.
Semi-cylindrical linings 2i! and 22 of resilient, pliable material such as rubber or the like are suitably fixed to the inner concave surfaces of v 2 l the jaw members l2 and 14 and include enlarged end portions 24 and 25 that engage the inner surfaces of'the end portions It and i3.
.Rigidly attached to or formed as an integral part of the member ID, intermediate the ends thereof, is a pair of spaced parallel outwardly projecting, arcuate arms 28 having longitudinal slots 39 that slidably receive pins 32 which are fixed to the member l4.
A pivot pin, rivet or the like 34 is disposed between the arms 28 and pivotally supports a finger grip 36 having an integral cam 38 which conforms to the bearing surface 40 of the mem ber I l.
The numeral 42 represents a commode or water closet bowl that is provided with a vertical aperture 44 in the rearwardly extending flange of the bowl.
An anchor bolt 46 engages the aperture 44 and is a part of a hinge 48 that includes arms 50 and 52 that are secured to an upper seat or closure 54 and a lower seat '56.
Heretofore, bolts or anchoring members 46 have been removably secured to the bowl 42 by a nut, a metallic washer and a rubber washer or gasket and frequently such a construction necessitates the use of special tools in order to remove the same from the bolt 46. It is, therefore, the principal feature of this invention to provide a locking nut or clamp that can be quickly and readily applied to or removed from the bolt 46 in a convenient manner.
In practical use of the present invention, the members [2 and I4, and their linings 20 and 22, are inserted upwardly to embrace the bolt 46. The cam 36 is then forced downwardly so that. the cam 38 will engage and bear against the surface or shoulder 40 to force the members l2 and I4 into a clamped position, as shown best in Figure 2 of the drawings.
It is preferred that the members I2 and [4 be constructed of a metal or plastic material, however, any suitable rigid, durable and non-corrosive material could be employed for this purpose without deviating from the scope for which it is intended.
To release the present clamp from the bolt 46, it is merely necessary to lift or pull upwardly upon the lever 36 whereby the cam 38 will disengage the bearing surface 40 and the members 12 and [4 may be spread relative to each other.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a water closet including a bowl having tween said arms, means carried by said second clamping member slidably engaging said arms, said second clamping member having an outwardly flared end forming a sloping continuation of a cylindrical bearing surface, and a cam pivotally carried by said arms and engageable with said bearing surface at the juncture with said outwardly flared end to force said jaws into a clamping position.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein said first and second members include inner, resilient linings having concaved bearing surfaces.
3. The combination of claim 2, wherein said arms include slots and said means slidably engaging said armsv including pins fixed to said second clamping member.
