2 Claims.
' vide a threaded metal stamping which may be welded, soldered, or otherwise attached to a metal body to facilitate the support of a molded plastic knob, ornament, or similar non-metallic part.
Another object of the invention is too provide a pressed or die-struck metal cup having a rounded thread in the side wall thereof and constituting a stud for the support of a non-metallic knob or the like formed with a molded or cast thread therein of similar form.
Another object of the invention is to form a threaded cylindrical stamping from thin metal stock capable of providing suii'icient iiexure to accommodate engagement thereof with a molded thread in a non-resilient part.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knob stanchion in the form of a deep-drawn shell or cup, configured for the attachment of the base thereof upon a metal body, for threaded engagement with a non-metallic part, and for sealed engagement of the lower end thereof with the face of the metal body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle for a pan lid embodying/a thin walled non-metallic knob having a sheet metal cup threaded therein, the assembly defining an air cell within the handle for the insulation thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a thin sheet metal cup having a rounded thread formed in the side wall thereof, the diameter of the cup being relatively large in order to provide a base of an area of suiiicient size to accommodate the rigid securement of the cup upon another body.
Other objects and advantages, more or less ancillary to the foregoing, and the manner in which all the various objects are realized will I trated in Fig. 1, the section being on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the knob,
2 the section being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring first to Fig. 2, the pan lidchosen herein as illustrative of one of the environs within which the invention may be used comprises a dished metal plate lIl) formed with a depending circumferential ange I I and a fiat central area I2 for reception of the knob and supporting stanchion therefor. If desired, the entire face of the plate may be curved, and the lower face of the supporting stanchion and knob may be formed complementary thereto.
The knob-supporting post or stanchion comprises a cup I3 of a diameter which will assure the stability of the part when the base thereof is brazed, welded, or soldered to the plate III. The cup is die-struck and drawn from thin sheet metal stock capable of appreciable iiexure, and a rounded thread I4 is formed in the side wall thereof. The knob I5 as contemplated herein is formed from a non-metallic material such as a molded resinous plastic, a thread of similar form to that in the cup being cored therein during the molding operation. The side wall of the knob is relatively thin, and the lower end thereof is con-gured for sealed engagement with the face of the plate I0 when drawn into impinged relation therewith in order to prevent the admission of water and foreign matter into the void defined by the cup and recess in the knob.
With a, structure of this type it will be recognized that a light, hollow, non-metallic knob or handle may be effectively attached to a metal cover for a cooking utensil; that the thin side Walls of the knob assembly and the air cell therein will tend to lower the transfer of heat thereto; that the knob, whenl drawn into abutting engagement with the lid, will impose a strain upon the threads and thus restrain counter-rotational movement thereof; and that the yieldable side wall of the cup will accommodate the assembly of the knob or an ornament which is formed with an inflexible wall having a cast or molded thread therein;
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific `terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and
that various rearrangements of parts and modications of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
I claim:
l. A knob assembly for a cooking utensil comprising a thin walled ductile metallic cup of a depth substantially equal to the diameter thereof, a screw thread rolled in the side wall of said cup, the base of the cup being adapted for afxation upon a cooking utensil, a moulded nonmetallic hollow knob, a moulded internal screw thread therein of complementary conguration to the threads on the cup, said knob being screwed upon said cup and being adapted for abutting engagement with the face of a cooking utensil to effect impingement of the threads in the cup and knob, the walls of the cup and knob dening a Void constituting an insulating medium for the knob.
2. A knob assembly for a cooking utensil comprising a thin walled ductile metallic cup of a depth substantially equal to the diameter thereof, a screw thread rolled in the side wall of said cup. the base of the cup being adapted for aixation upon a cooking utensil, a moulded non-metallic hollow knob, a moulded internal screw thread therein of complementary configuration to the threads on the cup, said knob being screwed upon said cup and being adapted for abutting engage- Cil 4 ment with the face of a cooking utensil to effect a sealed relation between the ductile metal threads in the cup and knob, and the contiguous faces of the knob and cooking utensil, the walls of the cup and knob defining a void substantially equal in size to the volumetric capacity of the cup and constituting an insulating medium for the knob.
