SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 258,987, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed March 14, 18852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. CASADAY, of New Oarlisle, in the county'ot' St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky'Plows and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention-relates to sulky-plows, the object being to so construct a plow of this character that the adjustment of the plow will be facilitated, its arrangement and operation simplified, and the whole rendered durable and reliable in operation.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a sulky-plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. '2 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view; and Fig. 4 is a detached view of the inclined wheel, a
portion of the axle, and devices for adjusting the inclined wheel.
A represents a crank-axle provided with the outwardly-projecting arms a a.
B represents the rear section of the plowbeam, to the rear end of which is secured the plow O. The forward end of this section Bis provided with outwardlycurved arms I) b, which embrace the crank A of the axle, and are perforated to receive a pivot-bolt, which passes through said arms and through a perforation of the crank, and is provided with a nut, b which holds the boltin position.
D represents the forward section of the plowbeam, perforated at its rear end to adaptit to be pivoted at a central point upon the crank A, which is annularly recessed to receive the section D.
Upon the rear section, B, of the plow-beam is provided an upwardly-projecting bracket, 01, to which is pivoted a locking-brace, E, whose forward end is provided with a downwardly-projecting lip, 0, adapted to engage with a catch, 6, formed on the forward section, D, of the plow-beam, and thus rigidly connect thebeam-sections together, and with a lever, E, for disengaging the brace. To the rear end of the forward section, D, is pivoted in a bracket, f, a plunger, F, extending rearwardly within the rear section, B, and provided with a laterally-projecting stud, f, adapted to extend through an elongated slot, f formed in the side of the section B.
Upon the arm a of the axle Ais mounted a sleeve, G, to the inner end of which is connected one side, h, of a seat-frame, H, the opposite side, h,'of the latter being perforated to fit upon the inner end of the arm a of the axle. The cross-bar h of said frame is adapted to support a seat, H, and is provided with a rearwardly-projecting bracket, id, to which is pivotally secured one end of a notched bar or latch, I, the'latter being adapted to engage with a laterally-projecting stud or catch, 6, on the rear section, B, of the plow-beam.
J represents the tongue of the plow, secured to the sleeve G by a plate, J, and a bolt, 3', and to the seat-frame by a diagonal brace, j, secured at one end by a bolt, j which passes through said brace, tongue, and plate, and at its opposite end to the side h of the seat-frame, in any suitable manner.
K represents a stud projecting laterally from the inner side of the tongue J to form a footrest for the driver. Upon this stud K are pivotally supported two guide-links, It It, connected at their upper ends by a perforated head, 70, and provided with elongated slots 70*. Upon the arm a of the axle A is mounted the land-spindle sleeve 1, to which is connected by a curved brace, 12, the land-spindle P, upon which is journaled the land-wheel P.
To the outer end of the sleeve P is secured an arched frame or guard, Q, having lugs or stops (1. A coiled spring, R, surrounds said sleeve, and is secured thereto at its inner end, while its outer end is bent to engage with the land-lever M, which is arranged between the stops q of the guard Q, so that its movement is limited by said stops, and the spring is thus protected against undue strain.
The diagonal brace 0 serves to securely brace the land-wheel side of the axle to the tongue, and by the lifting-lever M the landwheel may be readily adjusted.
S represents a slotted frame, pivoted at its outer end to the plate J, secured to the under side of the sleeve G, while its opposite end, .9, is adapted to slide within a guide, 8, of said plate, and is provided with an elongated slot, 8 within which is arranged a cam, T, secured to the lower end of a vertical rotating shaft, U. The latter passes through a perforated lug, u, projecting from the plate J, and is pivotally secured at its upper end to a perforated and indented plate orsector, V, rigidly mounted on the furrow side of the frame H, and is provided with a hand-lever, v, to engage sector V. The frame S is provided with two horizontal elongated slots, t, arranged parallel with, but diagonally opposite to, each other. Within these slots t are secured bolts 20, which connect the arm W of the furrow-spindle X to said frame. The spindle X is arranged at an angle to the axle A, and carries the furrow-wheel Y at an angle to the ground.
Upon the outer end of the sleeve G is rigidly mounted a sector, Z, while upon the end of the arm a of the axle A is rigidly mounted a lifting-lever, Z, provided on its inner side with a hand-lever, z, to which is connected a rod, 2 the lower end of which is connected to a dog, 2 having a coil-spring, 2 surrounding it, and working in perforated lugs 2 of the sector.
The plow as thus constructed is adapted to operate as follows: hen the plow is at work the two sections of the beam are connected and held rigidly together by the locking-brace E. When it becomes necessary to pass an obstruction the driver disengages the brace E by means of the lever E, when the rear section, B, of the plow will fall and the point of the plow be tilted up out of the ground. The latch I will then engage the catchi on the section B and hold the plow until the lifting-lever Z is drawn back to lift the plow, when the latch I will be automatically thrown out of engagement with its catch 2' by means of the stud f of the plunger F. These devices constitute an automatic lift for theplow, and are fully described and claimed in a separate application for Letters Patent signed by me the 31st day of January, 1882. Hence a fuller and more detailed description of such parts is deemed unnecessary in this application 5 and Iwould have it understood that I reserve to myself theright to claim in separate application such parts of the present device as are herein shown and described, but not claimed.
The combination of the plow-beam sections with a crank-axle enables said sections to be moved independently of each other, and the slotted links between which the forward end of the beam is guided enable the heel and point of the plow to be raised vertically until the crank of the axle passes the center, when the heel of the plow will be raised higher than the point.
By the improved adjusting devices connected with the furrow-wheel frame the furrow-wheel may be easily adjusted to run either parallel with the land-wheel or at an angle thereto, as may be found necessary to properly adjust the plow.
It will be apparent that many changes and modifications of the details of construction of myimprovement may be resorted to \vithoutdcparting from the spiritofmy invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described,but reserve to myself the right to make such alterations in form and construction as may properly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a snlky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle, of a plow-beam consisting of two independent sections pivotally connected to the crank ofthe axle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle, of a plow-beam made in sections, one section being pivoted to the crank and the other section pivoted on a bolt extending through the crank, substantially as set forth.
3. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle, of a plow-beam having a rear section provided with arms which embrace the crank of the axle and are pivoted thereto, and a forward section adapted to be centrally pivoted to said crank, substantially as set forth.
4. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle, of a plow-beam consisting of a front and a rear section, said sections beingpivotally connected with the crank of the axle, and suitable means for connecting and disconnecting the sections of the beam, substantially as set forth.
5. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle and a frame, of a plow-beam consisting of a rear section and a front section pivotally connected to the crank of the axle, and a depending notched bar orlatch pivoted upon said frame and adapted to engage a catch on the rear section of the beam, substantially as set forth.
6. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle and a seat-supporting frame, of a plow-beam consisting of a rear section and a front section pivotally connected to the crank of the axle, a locking-brace pivot-ed to said rear section and adapted to engage a catch on the forward section, a depending notched bar or latch pivoted upon said frame and adapted to engage a catch projecting laterally from the adjacent side of said rear section,anda plunger pivoted to the rear end of said forward section, and having a stud arranged to project laterally through a slot in said rear section to automatically disengage the latch from its catch, substantially as set forth.
7. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle and a sectional plow-beam having the'adjacent ends of the forward and rear sections pivoted to the crank of the axle, of a guide adapted to receive the forward end of the front section of the plow-beam and allow' of a limited vertical movement stantially as set forth.
8. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with the tongue and forward end of the plow-beam, of a stud or foot-rest projecting laterally from said tongue and pivotally supporting slotted guide-links, within which are supported laterally-projecting studs of the plow-beam, substantially as set forth.
9. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with a crank-axle, of a plow-beam having its rear section pivotally connected to the crank of the axle and its forward section pivoted-at one end to said crank, while its opposite end is provided with laterally-projectin g studs which receive slotted guide-links, thelatter beingpiw oted to a projecting stud of the plow beam, substantially as set forth.
10. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with an inclined spindle secured at one end to an oscillating plate connected with the axle, of a vertical shaft and a cam or eccentric for imthereof, sub
of a sleeve or box mounted on said axle and a' plate secured to the under side of said sleeve and tongue, the frame of the furrow-wheel pivoted atone end to the outer end of said plate, while its opposite end is adapted to slide in a guideformed on theinner side ofsaid plate, and
is provided with an elongated slot,withiu which is arranged an operating-cam connected to a rotating shaft adapted to be operated by the driver, substantially as set forth. I
12. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with the axle, of a seat-supporting frame secured thereto at one end, while its opposite end is secured upon a sleeve mounted on said axle, a plate or bracket secured to the under side of said sleeve and to the tongue, a furrow-wheel axle-frame pivotally connected to the outer end of said plate, while its inner end is adapted to a guide formed on the inner side of said plate, and is slotted to receive an operating-cam, the latter being connected to a rotating vertical shaft which extends through a perforated and indented plate secured to the adjacent side of the seat-frame, andis provided with a hand-lever or dog whereby the furrow-wheel may be adjusted, substantially as set forth.
