3 Claims.
My invention relates to railway cars and more particularly to door frames for railway hopper cars- 1 The principal object of my invention is to provide an effective door frame for a hopper of a railway car which i formed of an upper member or hinge buttand a rolled angular member which forms the bottom and sides of the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hopper car door frame which is made of a top member and a rolled member forming the remainder of the frame, with sealing flanges arranged at the corners of the frame for cooperating with the door to effect closure of the door op g.
A primary feature of the invention consists in providing a door frame for a railway hopper car with an angular member which has a leg adapted to be secured to side and bottom sheets of the hopper and terminates in an outwardly project-. ing flange forming a sealing flange for cooperating with a door pivotally associated with the frame, the sealing flange being severed from the leg defining the outer side of the frame at the upper portion thereof and being curved inwardly to be welded to the adjacent end portion of the outwardly projecting flange of a hinge butt.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a door frame of the construction indicated where the outwardly projecting flange of the hinge butt is notched at opposite ends and the sealing flanges are severed from the leg of the other member of the frame adjacent the upper corners of the frame, said severed portions being curved inwardly and being butt welded to the notched ends of the flange of the hinge butt.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing the door frame with plates in the upper corners of the frame beneath the inwardly curved sealing flange's.
Other and more specific features of the invention, residing in advantageous forms, combinations and relations of parts, will hereinafter appear and be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a railway hopper car showing my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the upper outer corner of the frame as viewed perpendicularly to the frame.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1 additionally showing in cross section a pivotally mounted door.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
As the hoppers on opposite sides of the center sill are identical the invention is shown as applied to but a single hopper.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a center sill of usual construction having a top web 2, horizontal leg 3 and an outwardly projecting lower flange 4. As seen in Figure 1, principally in dotted lines, the sides and bottom of the hopper may be conveniently formed from a continuous sheet 5. Immediately above the door opening the hopper sheet 5 merge into a cross ridge sheet 6.
The hopper door frame forming the invention consists of two principal members, namely, (1) a transversely extending hinge butt 1 which forms the upper part of the door frame, and (2) a rolled member 8 which forms the sides and bottom of the hopper frame. Where the hinge butt adjoins the center sill, it may advantageously be riveted thereto as indicated at 9. The hinge butt is of somewhat conventional form having an upstanding flange it which may be secured in any suitable manner, not shown, to the cross ridge sheet and a flange I l which projects outwardly therefrom and terminates in approximately the same plane as the other sealing flanges (to be hereinafter described) of the door frame.
The rolled angular member 8 consists of a flange l2 which is arranged substantially perpendicular 1y to the hopper sheets and a flange or leg l3 by which it may be riveted, as indicated at [4, or otherwise secured to the side and bottom sheets of the hopper. The flange I3 continues outwardly beyond the hopper sheets and terminates in a sealing flange l5 for cooperating with inwardly projecting flanges l6 of a door I! which is adaptedv to be pivotally associated with the hopper frame, the door being only shown in Figure Bin section.
In order that the inner hopper side sheet may be disposed closely adjacent the outer end of the lower flange 4 of the center sill, the flange 12 is notched, as indicated at I8. The door flanges l6 which preferably terminate in laterally extending marginal flanges l9 are also notched as at 20 to clear the bottom flange of the center sill as the door swings to and from closed position.
At its lower corners member 8 instead of being bent abruptly is curved so that the sealing flange l5 thereof at those corners also curves gently to enable a pressed door having inwardly extending flanges to readily cooperate therewith.
To likewise provide the upper corners of the frame with curved sealing flanges with which a pressed door having inwardly projecting flanges may effectively cooperate, the sealing flanges adjacent both upper corners of the frame are sever d flange l3. These severed sealing flanges are curved inwardly into notches 22 formed in opposite ends of the outwardly projecting flange I l of the hinge butt. The notches are of such depth that, as indicated above, the outer edge of flange I I is in substantially the same plane as the outer edges of the sealing flanges. The remaining 'unbent portion of flange l3 as well as flange 8 are welded to the hinge butt I, as indicated at 23.
where the sealing flanges are bent inwardly, the plates 24 effectively close openings which would the embodiment of the invention illustrated without departing from the spiritand scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
WhatI claim is: 7 r 1. A-door frame for a railway hopper car including a hinge butt member having an outwardly projecting flange, said flange engaging the upper portion of a cooperating door pivotally associated with said frame, and an .angular member secured to said hinge butt and forming the sides and bottom of the frame, said angular member having a leg adapted to be secured to side and bottom sheets of a hopper and terminating in an outwardly projecting portion affording with the flange of said hinge butt a sealing flange for cooperating with the said door, said outwardly projecting flange of said angular,
member being disposed inwardly of the portion of said angular member forming the-outer side of the frame, said sealing flange being severed from each leg adjacent the outer upper corner of said frame and being curved inwardly, the inner end of said curved portion being welded to the 50 adjacent portion of said flange of the hinge butt, and a plate secured tothe curved portionof each of said legs, said plates serving to close the cor-- ner openings of said frame adjacent the ends of K eluding a hinge butt member having an outwardly projecting flange, said flange engaging the upper portion of a cooperating door pivotally associated with said frame, and an angular member secured to said hinge butt and forming the sides and bottom of the frame, said angular member having a leg adapted to be secured to side and bottom sheets of a hopper and terminating in an outwardly projecting portion affording with the flange of said ihinge butt a sealing flange for cooperating with the said door, the opposite ends of said outwardly projecting flange being notched inwardly of adjacent portions of said angular member, said sealing flange being severed from said leg adjacent the upper portions thereof and being curved inwardly adjacent the upper corners of the frame, the inner ends of said curved portions being butt welded to the notched ends of said flange of the hinge butt to provide the frame with a continuous flange, said flange having rounded corners for cooperating with the correspondingly formed portions of said associated door.
3. A door frame for the .hopperof a railway car including an upper hinge butt member having an outwardly projecting flange, and a rolled angular member secured to said hinge but forming the sidesand bottom of the door frame, said member having a leg adapted to be secured to the side and bottom sheets -.of ahopper vandters minating in an outwardly projecting portion af-, fording a door sealing flange, said rolled memher being bent at points corresponding to the lower corners of the door frame and having rounded lower corners, said sealing flange being severed ,fromsaid leg adjacent the opposite ends thereof and being curved inwardly to provide the frame with rounded upper corners, theinner ends of said curvedportions of the leg being respectively welded to adjacent portions of said flange of the hinge butt, and means underlying a curved portion .of said sealing flange for closing an .opening adjacent the end of the hinge butt, said means being secured to the said hinge butt and to the curved ,portion of said sealing flange.
