, 1 This invention relates to improvements in Aweft replenishing looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide a bobbin transferrer arm which can be adjusted for use with bobbins of different lengths.
Weit replenishing looms ordinarily employ a magazine in which are stored reserve bobbins which are transferred one by one into a shuttle when its supply of weft becomes exhausted. Some looms operate with comparatively short shuttles which carry short bobbins while other looms operate with larger shuttles carrying longer bobbins. The reserve bobbins are ordinarily made with a butt and have vwound thereon a supply or package of weft which lies between the butt and the bobbin tip. In order to effect proper transfer it is desirable that the tip of the bobbin .be prevented from moving upwardly at the time the butt of the bobbin is inserted into the spring jaw or clip of the shuttle being replenished. It is an important object of the present invention to provide a transferrer arm with a bobbin tip engaging foot or the like which can be adjusted along the length yof the transferrer arm for use with bobbins of different lengths and be effective in all of its adjusted positions to prevent upward movement of the tip of a bobbin being transferred.
A transferrer arm which has gone into general use in connection with a Well-known type lof loom has a bobbin butt engaging foot and a seco ond foot joined to it by webs and spaced from it in the direction of the length of the bobbin. Such transierrer arm is generally made for use with short bobbins. It is an important object of the present invention to provide an auxiliary or third foot which can be adjusted to occupy different distances from the aforesaid second foot and thus be adapted for use with longer bobbins.
in order that the auxiliary or third foot may be readily adjusted it is a further object of the invention to employ a screw threaded member which can turn with respect to the auxiliary foot to move the latter toward or from the main part of the transferrer arm, together with a guide member, such as a rod, spaced laterally from the screw and slidable within the transferrer arm. The screw and guide members are parallel and afford support for the auxiliary foot at two points spaced along its length to hold it firmly in position with respect to the remainder of the transferrer arm.

Referring to Figs. l, and 2, the loom frame I supports a reserve bobbin magazine M which in the present instance carries front and back stacks 2 and 3 of reserve bobbins Bl and B2 which move by gravity to the bottoms of their respective stacks. The magazine is pivoted about an axis 4 and can be rocked so that the lowest bobbin oi either stack can be located in transfer position. The lay 5 is provided with a shuttle box 6 to receive the shuttle S containing a bobbin B. The lay is formed with a slot 'l under the box to permit downward passage of the bobbin B when it is expelled from the shuttle S incident to a weft replenishing operation.
` The magazine has a transferrer arm or hammer Il) pivoted thereto at Il and having a rearwardly extending part l2 and a laterally extending part designated generally at i3, see Fig. 2. The part I3 includes a vertical oot I. for cooperation with the butt l5 of a bobbin in transfer position. As viewed in Fig. 2 top and bottom webs I6 and I1, respectively, lead from the right of the foot i4 to a second vertical foot I8 preferably integral with the Webs. `The transierrer arm I2 is provided with a latch 2B normally in a down idle position shown in Fig. 1 but capable of being raised into the path of the bunter 2l on the lay to cause rocking of the transferrer arm in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1 due to forward movement of the lay, to the left in Fig. 1, when a replenishing operation occurs.
The magazine has an inner plate 22 to guide the butts of the reserve bobbins, and has also an outer or tip guiding plate 23 to guide the small or tip ends 24 of the bobbins as they. move downwardly in their stacks.
The matter thus far described is of common construction and of itself forms no part of the present invention except as noted hereinafter.
An auxiliary or third foot 25 as shown in Fig. 2 has secured thereto a guide member 23 having a preferably smooth surface to fit into a bore 21 drilled in the top web I6. Aset screw 28 tapped into the top of web i3 is provided for holding the guide member 25 in longitudinally adjusted vposition with respect to the web I6. The auxiliary foot 25 may be secured to its guide member 2G in any approved manner, as by welding or silver soldering.
Located below the guide member 23 is an adjusting screw member 39 which is screw threaded into a tapped bore 3l in the lower web il. A lock nut 32 holds the longitudinal adjustment of the adjusting screw member 3! with respect to the second foot I8.
The outer or right end of the screw member as viewed in Fig. 2 is formed integrally with a stop 35 preferably of a shape adapting it for turning by a wrench. For this purpose the stop may be formed as a nut such as that shown at 32. The stop 35 is adapted for engagement with the left side of the auxiliary foot 25 as viewed in Fig. 2. The screw member has a shank 36 which extends through a smooth bore 31 extending through the bottom of the auxiliary foot 25, and the outer end of the screw member projects beyond the auxiliary foot as at 38 and is provided with a slot 39, see Fig. 9, to receive a spring washer 49, see Fig. 8. This washer i'lts into the groove 39 and together with the stop i .35 prevents substantial end motion of the screw member 30 with respect to the auxiliary foot 25.
The screw member by reason of the construction shown more particularly in Figs. 8 and 9 can turn with respect to the bottom of the auxiliary foot 25 to be moved along the screw threaded bore 3| in the web I'I.Y
As shown in Fig. 2 the auxiliary foot is relatively close to the second foot i3 to adapt it for use with a comparatively short bobbin BI such as is used with the magazine shown. If the transferrer arm is to be used with a diierent magazine adapted for use with longer bobbins, such as shown at B3 in Fig. 7, the set screw 29 and lock nut 32 will be loosened, after which the screw member 30 can be turned in the web l1 by application of a wrench to the stop 35. The screw will be turned in the direction to move the auxiliary foot away from the second foot I3 until it occupies some such position as shown in Fig. 7. During this adjustment the guide member 26 slides outwardly with respect to the smooth bore 21 and when the adjustment is attained the set screw 28 and the lock nut 32 will be tightened to hold the adjustment. During this adjustment the screw turns with respect to the Vlower end of the auxiliary foot 25, as will be understood from Fig. 9.
From the foregoingitwill be seen that the invention sets forth a simple form of transferrer arm adaptable for use with bobbins of different lengths. The previously mentioned first Vand second feet and webs integral with them may be considered as the main part of the transferrer arm on which the auxiliary or idle foot 25 is mounted for adjustment toward and from said main part so that the auxiliary foot can engage the tips of bobbins of different lengths. It may not be necessary in all instances, however, to use the second foot. The screw member 39 can be adjusted with respect to the main part of the transferrer arm and when so adjusted causes the auxiliary foot to move with it due to the cooperation of the stop 35 and the washer 49. During this adjustment the guide member 26 slides along the bore 21. When the members 26 and 30 are tightened in position b-y the set screw Zland lock nut 32, respectively, they reinforce each other and the auxiliary foot has Support at two different points alongitswlengthw to hold it in position against relative motion with respect to the main part of the transferrer arm. The spring washer D can be Vreadily removed if it should become necessary to replace the auxiliary foot.
Having thus described the invention it will be seen that changes and modications of the foregoing specic disclosure may be made with'- out departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is:Y
1. In a transferrer -arm for a reserve bobbin having a mass of weft between the butt and top thereof, a foot on the arm to engage the butt end of the bobbin, a second foot on the transferrer arm for engagement with the weft on the bobbin, an auxiliary foot for engagement with the tip end of the bobbin, adjusting means con necting the second and auxiliary feet to vary the distance therebetween, and guide means spaced from the adjusting means slidable relatively to the second foot and cooperating with the adjusting means to support the auxiliary foot.
2. VIn a transferrer arm for a reserve bobbin having a butt and a tip, a foot on the transferrer arm to engage the butt of the bobbin, another foot on the transferrer arm to engage the tip end of the bobbin, adjustingrmeans operatively connecting the two feet effective to vary the distance between said feet, and guide means on said other foot spaced from the adjusting means slidable on the transferrer arm and reinforcing said other foot for all adjusted positions of the latter relative to the transferrer arm.
3. ln a transferrer arm for a reserve bobbinV having a butt and a tip, a foot on the transferrer arm to engage the butt of the bobbin, another foot to engage the tip end of the bobbin, a screw member rotatable on said other foot held against endwise movement relative to the latter Yfoot and screw threaded into the transferrer arm,
and a guide member secured to the second foot parallel to and'spaced from the screw member andy slidable relatively to the transferrer arm.
4. In a transferrer armior a reserve bobbin having a butt and a tip, a foot on the transferrer arm Vtc engage the butt of the bobbin, another foot to engage the tip end of the bobbin, a screw member rotatable on said other foot and having a stop to engage one side of said other foot, means on the screw member engaging the opposite side of said other foot cooperating with the stop to prevent endwise movement of the screw member relatie/'eV to said other foot, said screw member -slidable in ing with said one member to prevent angular being screw threaded into the transferrer arm, and a guide member moving with said other foot parallel to the screw member and having sliding engagement with the transferrer arm and cooperating with the screw member to prevent angular movement of said other foot relative to the transferrer arm.
5. In a transferrer arm for a reserve bobbin having a butt and a tip, a foot on the transferrer armr to engage the butt of the bobbin, spaced webs xed with respect to and extending laterally from said foot, another foot to engage the tip end of the bobbin, parallel members, one for each web, extending into the latter and supporting said other foot, one of said members being capable of varying the distance of said other foot from thg'ijrstnamed foot, and the other member being the corresponding web and cooperatmovement of said other foot relative to the rst named foot.
6. In a transferrer arm for a reserve bobbin having a butt and a tip, a foot on the transferrer arm to engage the butt of the bobbin, spaced webs xed with respect to and extending laterally from said foot, another foot to engage the tip end of the bobbin, parallel members, one for each web, extending into the latter and supporting said other foot, one of said members being screw threaded into the corresponding web and eiective when rotated to vary the distance between said feet, and the other member being slidable in the web associated therewith when the distance between said feet is varied, said other member cooperating with the rst named member to prevent relative angular movement of said feet.
