March 4, 1952 HANSON MUFFLING MECHANISM FOR COMPRESSOR VALVES Filed June 10, 1946 [NZ 'EYTOR. YZ/W FIG.I
A TTm/VEY Patented Mar. 4, 1952 MUFFLING MECHANISM FOR COMPRESSOR VALVES Lars Hanson, Syracuse, N. Y., auignor to Carrier Corporation, Syracuse, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application June 10, 1940, Serial No. 875,810
4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to valve structures and more particularly to valves employed in fluid compressors such as the reciprocating compressor of a refrigeration system.
Heretofore considerable difficulty has been encountered with compressor valves of the annular ring type because of their tendency to be noisy in operation. While relatively quiet operation may be obtained by using thin flexible valves, such valves are not durable or reliable and need be replaced frequently. While a smaller valve area creates less noise, a large valve area is necessary for high efficiency. From the standpoint of performance and reliability it has been preferred to use relatively rigid and heavy valves of large area even though they are noisier in operation.
The chief object of the present invention is to provide improved valve mechanism including noise muflling or dampening means.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved muilier for valve mechanism or fluid compressors.
A further object is to provide an inexpensive valve which is relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which is quiet and reliable in operation. 7 I
This invention relates to valve mechanism including in combination a cover member or valve plate, a valve guide member mounted adjacent the cover member, port means in the cover member, a valve adapted to control gas flow through the port means, yieldable means for urging the valve toward said port means, means for muflling the noise created by movement of the valve, said mufliing means forming a passage for gas discharged through the port means, and means in the guide member permitting the passage of gas into the muflling means, the mufliing means having an opening therein for the discharge of gas.
The attached drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a reciprocating compressor embodying the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing there is illustrated a compression cylinder 2 in which a piston 3 operates. A valve plate or cover member 4 is shown mounted over cylinder 2. A port 5 is disposed in plate 4 for the discharge of gaseous refrigerant from the cylinder into the cylinder head 6. A valve 1 is disposed in position to close port 5. A valve guide member 8 is secured to plate 4 by suitable fastening means 9. Valve guide 8 is provided with a recess for the reception of a plurality of springs 10 adapted to urge valve 1 toward port 5. A chamber II is formed in the valve guide I and is adapted to receive gas from port 5. A plurality of openings l2 and I! extend through valve guide 8 and connect chamber I l with the space enclosed by the cylinder head 6.
It will be understood that suitable intake and suction valves are provided to admit gaseous refrigerant into the portion of the cylinder 2 where it is compressed by piston 3 and then discharged through port 5. Such means per so are well known in the art and do not require a detailed description.
A muiiling member designated generally at H is disposed about valve guide. 8 and serves to mume or dampen the sound created by movement of valve 1 and the fluid. Mufliing member It comprises a vertically extending element l5 seated on plate 4 and spaced from the exterior wall of valve guide 8 to form a passage It for gas. A flange ll extends horizontally from element :5 and inwardly over valve guide 8. The terminal portion l8 of flange ll extends downwardly and seats on guide 8. An opening I9 is provided in terminal portion i8 for the passage of gas into the cylinder head. Gas discharged through port 5 passes through chamber II and passage [2 into passage I6 formed between element I5 and the exterior wall of guide member 8. Fastening means 20 secures element I5 to plate 4.
A second element 2| is provided in the form, for example, of a cup-like cylindrical washer secured by fastening means 9 to the guide member 8 and plate 4. Element 2| extends horizontally as shown at 22 in the plane of flange H to form a passage 23 for gas between horizontal portion 22 and the exterior wall of valve guide 8. Gas from port 5 enters chamber I I and passes through passage l3 into passage 23. Elements l5 and 2i preferably are spaced apart to provide an opening 24 for the discharge of gas into the space enclosed by cylinder head 6. Opening IS in the terminal portion [8 of flange l1 opens into passage 23 immediately below opening 24 so that the gases from passages l6 and 23 are free to pass into the space enclosed by cylinder head 6. It will be understood elements l5 and 2| may be integral with one another if desired, suitable provision being made for the discharge of gas therefrom into the space enclosed by cylinder head 6.
In the operation of the device, gas is compressed in cylinder 2 by means of piston 3. The compressed gas is discharge through port 5 and the amount of gas discharged is controlled by valve 1. Gas passing through port 5 enters chamber of the wave length corresponding to the irequency of the noise created by the movement of valve 1. It will be understood that by proper dimensioning of the distances between the elements of the muilling member I and the valve guide member 8, a substantial reduction in noise may also be obtained by the eflect of the reflected wave.
My invention provides a simple and inexpensive valve mechanism which is quiet and reliable in operation. The muflling member provided by my invention serves to reduce considerably the noise created by movement of a valve governing the directionalfiow of gas and thus renders the valve extremely quiet in operation.
While I have described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood my invention is not limited thereto since it may be otherwise embodied within the scope of'the following claims.

In mechanism for muflling sounds in compressor valve structures, the combination of a cover member, a valve guide member mounted adjacent said cover member, port means in said cover member, a valve adapted to control gas flow through said port means, yieldable means disposed in said guide member for urging said valve toward said port means, a chamber formedbetween the cover member and the guide member for the discharge of gas from said port means, a muflling member disposed about said guide member, said member including a first element adapted to form a passage for gas, and a second element adapted to form a second passage for gas, and a plurality of passages connecting the passages in said muiiling member with said chamber, said first element being charge or" gas from said port means, a mufliing member disposed about said guide member at a predetermined distance therefrom to form a passage therebetween adapted to muffle the noise created by movement of said valve, and a pinrality of passages in said guide member connecting said chamber and the muflling member for the discharge of gas into said muiliing passage, said muiiiing member including a vertically extending element seated on said cover member and spaced from the vertical wall of said guide member, a flange on said element extending inwardly and spaced from the horizontal wall of said uide member, the flange terminating in a downwardly extending portion seated on the horizontal wall of said guide member, the downwardly extending portion or" said flange having,
