This invention relates to a combination diaper and moisture-proof cover and has for an object to provide an improved infant's garment affording proper diapering as well as protective covering for babies.

A further object of this invention is to provide an infant's garment which is made in two parts.

a separate diaper member, which may be removed and separated for laundering, and a moisture proof cover which may be wiped clean with a damp cloth, and normally does 'not need washing.

A further object of this invention is to provide a moisture-proof cover and a diaper which.

cooperate with each other when in use, the cover being adjustable in size to take care of a certainamount of growth of the infant, the cover being also yieldable to provide a sufficient amount of support about the trunk, yet at the same time being comfortable, non-binding, moisture-resistant, yet having excellent ventilation.

Yet a further object of this invention is to: provide a combination diaper and cover with? which the baby may be diapered in a single operation.

Still a further object of this invention is to provide a cover and diaper wherein the diaper is v slightly smaller than the outside cover in order that the garment may fit snugly.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention comprises the constructions, combinations and arrangement of vparts hereinafter set forth, claimed, and disclosed on the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The combination diaper and moisture-proof cover of this invention includes two parts, a fabric diaper and a moisture-proof cover of plastic or rubber or other suitable moisture-proof flexible material.

The diaper consists of a suitable diaper cloth, preferably of two sheets of material, fastened together along its edges, cut away along its sides so as to form leg openings between the front and the back portions of the diaper, the back portion being preferably wider than the front portion. Included between the front and back portion are two additional thicknesses of absorbing material, preferably in a rectangular shape extending between the leg openings so as to be located in the critical areas when in position on the baby. The front and back ends are provided with spaced apart portions of sna fasteners, preferably the female portions, to cooperate with suitable 10- cated male portions of snap fasteners on the cover.

l The cover portion is made of rubber, plastic or other suitable moisture-proof and moisture-resistant material, shaped about the same as the diaper, but somewhat wider and longer so that it will fit snugly about the diaper when about the baby's body. The front and side edges, except for the leg cutouts, are hemmed over a reinforcing tape, and the back edge is hemmed over an elastic tape to provide for a snug fit as well as expansion. cooperatively spaced male fasteners are located in the front non-elastic tape and the back elastic tape to cooperate with the female fasteners in the diaper. Additional fastener members are provided near the corners of the front edge and along the front sides, and complementary fastener members are similarly lo cated along the back edge sides, and also along center areas as to provide additional protection to the critical areas in use that are first subjected to moisture and body discharges. The back edge I8 is slightly wider than the front edge 20, and the side edges are arcnately cut away at 2| far enough to provide leg openings 22. Snap fastener portions 23, preferably females, are secured in spaced apart relation alon the, front edge and back edge l8 The moisture-proof cover i2 is shaped similarly to the diaper II, and consists of a sheet of suitable material, plastic, rubber, or other moistureproof flexible material, having its front edge and its side edges 26 hemmed over non-elastic tape 24. The side edges 26 are cut away at 21 to provide central leg openings corresponding to the leg openings 2i in the diaper H. The cover 12 is slightly larger in all its dimensions than the diaper ll, except that the cover leg cutaways 27 are slightly smaller than the diaper leg cutaways 2].

The back edge 28 of the cover is hemmed over elastic tape 30 whereby such back edge is stretchable to the limit provided by the gathered up edge.

Secured through each ofthe front edges 25 and the back edges 23 are a pair of spaced apart male fastener portions 3| arranged to cooperate with the female fastener portions 23 of the diaper I I, such male fastener portions extending inwardly of the cover 12. Another pair of female. fastener portions 32 are located at the front corners and along the front sides 26, and a pair of corresponding located male portions 33, extending outwardly, are similarly located at the back corner and back side edges. An additional male portion 34 is located along the elastic back edge 28 spaced somewhat from the corner, and is used to adjust to a smaller size.

In operation, onev cover and one diaper make up a complete outfit, although the outfit will normally be most useful when the outfit consists of one cover and three or more diapers so as to have replacements available as needed. Obviously, diaper replacements may be marketed separately, if desired. To assemble the combination outfit, the diaper II is placed over the cover l2 in a position that the female fastener portions 23 of the back edge I8 of the diaper ll will cooperate with the male fastener portions 3| of the cover backedge 28, and likewise the female fastener portions 23 of the diaper front edge 20 will cooperate with male fastener portions 3| of the cover front edge 25. As thus assembled, the combined infants garment is ready for use on the baby. It is placed about the baby with the back edge extendin across the babys back, and the front edge across its stomach. The front corner fastener portions 32 are then snapped to the'back corner fastener portion33, or, if necessary for adjustment toa smaller size, are snapped to the fastener portions 34 instead. Then, the front side edge fastener portions are snapped to the back side edge fastener portions 33 thereby providing the leg openings .22 about the. thighs of the infant. Due to the flexibility of the plastic cover and of the diaper. the leg opening 22 will automatically accommodate itself to the girth of the thighs up to the limit provided by the position of the last mentioned fasteners, and if this limit has to be exceeded, it will be found that a larger size outfit will be needed, the outfits being provided in small, medium and large, so as to cover the range from infancy until the baby no longer uses diapers. Due to the fact that in each size outfit, the diaper is slightly smaller than the .cover, the outfit will fit snugly when curved about the babys body without undue wrinkling of the diaper within the cover.

When the diaper is soiled, the garment is removed from the baby by unsnapping the corner and side fasteners and replaced with another ready combined garment. Then, the soiled diaper is unsnapped from its cover for laundering, meantime being replaced by another diaper, making the garment readyfor the next replacement on the baby.

The diaper will absorb the normal amount of a babys movement and wetting, particularly due to the presence of the extra inserts l6 and I! within the diaper, which will prevent any excess of moisture from reaching the cover. Due to the snug, but not tight, fit of the edges and sides, as well as the thinner portions of the diaper outside of the insert area, excellent ventilation will be provided, thus avoidin causing excess overheating of the babys buttocks with its resultant discomfort and irritationofthe skin.

While the preferred form .of this invention has been set forth and disclosed, it is understood that it is not limited to the particular details set forth, and that changes may be made in details of construction and arrangement within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed.

Having thus set forth the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:

. An infants garment comprising in combination a moisture-resistant cover generally rectangular in outline with its sides at right angles to its edges and arcuate cutaways along the side edges to provide leg openings, a similarly shaped diaper insert of slightly smaller size, cooperating fastening means on the front and back'edges of the cover and diaper securing said diaper within said cover, one of said edges of said cover and diaper being slightly longer than the other to provide overlap, and cooperating fastening means on the side edges and the front and back edges of said cover for securing the garment about an infant,

i and additional fastener portions on one of said last mentioned edges providing for size adjustment, said diaper having extra diaper cloth inserts secured between the leg openings to provide extra moisture absorption, one of said front and back edges of-said cover having an elastic insert providing a snug fit about the infant.
