This invention generally relates to bung and polishing wheels and more particularly pertains to a bufling and polishing wheel assembly of exceptionally long-life characteristics comprising a rotatable core, polishing pads, and attaching keys for securing the pads to the core.
The principal object of the invention is to provide attaching keys which are quickly attachable and detachable to the core member for securing the polishing pads to the core member. The keys are first assembled to the pads and then locked in the core thereby securing the pads to the core.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for attaching the polishing `pads to the core member so that the pads are quickly and easily attached or detached individually with the operator handling only one pad and key at a time.
Another .object of the invention is to provide key-ways and recesses in the core which serve the dual purpose of co-acting with the attaching keys and of providing passages for movement of air under centrifugal force which movement of air ventilates the pads and eliminates whistling or humming.
A further object of the invention is to provide detachable securing means for attaching the pads to the core which are connected to the core at a point interiorly removed from the outer periphery of the core, and substantially within the core body. y
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cross-head on the connecting key of such length that the ends of each cross-head are proximate to the respective ends of the cross-heads which lie on either side of same thereby providing a segmental circumference of cross-heads surrounding the outer periphery of the core for the purpose of extending the base portion of the pads circumferentially around the core at its outer periphery to effect a full distribution of the pads at their working surface thereby providing an uninterrupted peripheral Working surface on the bulling wheel.
' A still further object of the invention is to prof vide `a polishing wheel which may be used in multiple units to furnish an enlarged working surface, which wheels, when placed in side by side relationship not only lock the attaching keys in their respective slots in the cores, but also position the crossheads on the keys in parallel relationship to the circumference of the cores which position fully extends the pads circumferentially of the core.
These and other objects will be more readily apparent from the following description, the appended claims, and the `attached drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, core member 20, Figs. 1 and 2, is axially mounted on any suitable rotatable shaft 2l which occasions the rotary movement of the core member 20 when powered, and is provided with radially disposed key-ways 22 which lead inwardly from the outer periphery of the core member 20 and terminate interiorly of same in recesses 23, while studs 24 are mounted on the outer periphery of the core member 20.
Key 25 is adapted to lie in the keyway 22 and recess 23 of the core member 20 Figs. 1 to 4 and comprises neck portion 26, locking head 21 and cross-head 28 which may optionally be formed with depending dogs 29, Fig. 6, or an arcuate head, Fig. 5 or both.
Polishing pad 30, Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 7, comprises eliptical or oval shaped portions 3| of fibrous material such as cloth, several layers deep, which portions 3| are secured together in their central area by stitching 32 or other suitable means and reinforcing element 33 may be utilized to strengthen this area by also stitching same to the portions 3l. The pad 30 has a central aperan attaching key Alocking-head 21 lies within the recess 23 ture 34 and two olf-center apertures 35 which are located on either side of the central aperture 34 and are so positioned that the longest diameter of the pad 3|] lies across the centers of the three apertures. In other words, the two side apertures 35 are positioned adjacent the long sides of the oval shaped portions 3l of the pad 3E. The pad is preferably oval in shape but may assume any suitablefshape. f
It can here be pointed out that if a key 25 of the type shown in Fig. 6 is employed equipped with depending dogs 29 for positioning the polishingpad 30 relative to the core member v20, the studs 24 ofthe core member 2l) are deleted from the core member 20; the dogs 29 and ,studs 24 being optional in the invention.

This turning of the cross-head 25 rotates the neck portion 25 and the locking-head 21 connected thereto so that at right angles` to the' key-way 22 thereby securing the key 25 and pad 30 to the core 20.

A buing wheel of the typezcomprising a discular chuck adapted forrotation, a plurality of buffs and a plurality of key elements having bow, stem and bit portions for releasably en gaging said buffs and chuck to removably mount the buffs on said chuck and characterized in that said chuck has a plurality o f passagewaysex tendingradially from the discularperiphery of said chuck; each of said passageways "having a terminal `chamber portion intermediate the discular periphery and axis of rotation of said chuck and parallel extending and laterally communicating eye and slot keyway portions in axial communication with said terminal chamber portion and of cross-sectional dimensions and contour approximating those of the key element stem and bit portions, said keyway portions being adapted for guiding said key element stem and bit portions inwardly of the discular periphery of said chuck to locate the bit portion of said key element in the terminal chamber portion of said passageway; said terminal chamber portion having a surface extending parallel to a sector of the discular periphery of the chuck and adapted for engagement by the key element bit portion located in said terminal chamber upon rotation of the key element from an angular relation in which the stem and bit portions thereof register with said keyway eye and slot portions of the passageway whereby the key element will be restrained against movement relative to the chuck.

A buiing wheel of the type comprising a discular chuck adapted for rotation, a plurality of buffs and a plurality of key elements having bow, stem and bit portions for releasably engaging said buffs and chuck to removably mount the bulls on said chuck and characterized in that said chuck has a plurality of passageways extending radially from the discular periphery of said chuck, each of said passageways having a terminal chamber portion intermediate the discular periphery and axis of rotation of said chuck and parallel extending and laterally communicating eye and slot keyway portions in axial communication with said terminal chamber portion and of cross-sectional dimensions and contour approximating those of the key element stem and bit portions, said keyway portions being adapted for guiding said key element stem and bit portions inwardly of the discular periphery of said chuck to locate the bit portion of said key element in the terminal chamber portion of said passageway; said terminal chamber portion having a surface extending parallel to a sector of the discular periphery of the chuck and adapted for engagement .by the key element bit portion located in said terminal chamber upon rotation of the key element from an angular relation in which the stem and bit portions thereof register with said keyway eye and slot portions of the passageway whereby the key element will be restrained against movement relative to the chuck, a plurality of studs extending radially from the discular periphery of said chuck. each stud being located on one side of and inspaced proximity to oneof said passageways and adapted to be engaged by the bow portion of the key element whereby said key element bow and stem portions form with the engaged stud a conned space on the discular periphery of the chuck for containing a portion of one of said bulls.

A bufng wheel of the discular chuck adapted for of buffs and a plurality of bow, stem and bit portions for releasably engaging said buffs and chuck to removably mount the buffs on said chuck and characterized in that said chuck has a plurality of passageways extending radially from the discular periphery of said chuck; each of said passageways having a terminal chamber portion intermediate the discular' periphery and axis of rotation of said chuck and parallel extending and laterally communicating eye and slot keyway portions in axial communication with said terminal chamber portion and of cross-sectional dimensions and contour approximating those of the key element stem and bit portions, said keyway portions being adapted for guiding said key element stem and bit portions inwardly of the discular periphery of said chuck to locate the bit portion of said key element in the terminal chamber portion of said passage- Way; said terminal chamber portion having a, surface extending parallel to a sector of the discular periphery of the chuck and adapted for engagement by the key element bit portion located type comprising a rotation, a plurality key elements having 1in :said 'terminal Vchamber "upon Yrotation Vof `the key 'elementifrornganiangular relation in which the rstem :and -bit portions thereof register with -said keywayre'ye@andzslotiportions of Vthe'passageway'whereby the key element Will be restrained `against movement relativeV to thefchuck, each of said buffshas anopening `or dimensions'and-convtour approximating vthe cross-sectional dimen-y sions and contour 'of one vof said studs land adapted to receive said vstud therein whereby said buff may be 'impinged onsaid stud and pre'- ventedfrom movementrelative to the chuck when the key Velements bow portion `engages said stud.
