-GEORGE W. ROBBINS, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS;
APPARATUS FOR LIFTING AND TURNING INVALIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'258,124, dated May 16, 1882. Appligation filed February 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBBINS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Lifting and Turning Invalids; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for liftin g invalids from the bed and changing their positions therein audit consists in certain improvements in the construction of such apparatus, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, illustrating the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top view of the apparatus. Fig. 3 isa vertical transverse section. Figs. 4., 5, and 6 represent the several slings used in operation.
P and J designate the frame-work of the apparatus.
S indicates a horizontal shaft placed longitudinally at the top of the frame, and having bearin g at each end. The said shaft is turned by means of a hand-wheel, W, and the intermediate gearing,F. Aratchet and paw], E, at one end of the shaft serves to hold it in position as it is turned.
A number of slings(designated byA, B, and O) are suspended by means of the straps L, at-
. tached to the shaft, the sling Abeiug intended canvas or other material forming the rests or.
supports. The sling A has the head-rest N, which is usually netting, secured to the ends of its yoke by means of cords. The slings B and 0 have the rests H and H, of canvas or other suitable material, provided with the rods a, secured to their extremities, as shown. The
cords I serve to connect the rest and the yoke at each end, as shown, the cords being detachably secured to each end of a rod, to, usually by loops, so that they may be readily detached as desired. In Fig. 6 the rest H is shown as divided by an additional rod, a, at the center, the rod being held by cords I. This arrangement is intended to prevent the legs of the patient or invalid from coming together uncomfortably. The cords I are adjustably secured to the yoke at either end, (see Fig. 5,) said cords passing through an eye, as, to a detachable fastening at T, so that either end of the rest may be raised or lowered when it is desired to turn the patient on one side or the other.
D indicates a strip of canvas, connected at one end by a strap, G, to the shaft S, and running under the bed or mattress on which the patient lies to thefoot of the bed, where it is fastened at a, so that by turning the shaft S the patient may be raised to a sitting posture.
For operation the apparatus is placed-longt tudinally over the bedstead M, as seen in Fig. l. The several slings are easily adjusted and readily raised by turning the hand-wheel W, which imparts motion to shaft S, the straps L winding upon the shaft, and thus gradually raising the invalid from the bed.
I claim- 1. In a lifting apparatus, one or more slings, each sling having a yoke, to the ends of which a rest is secured by cords having the adjustable fastening T X, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A sling for a lifting apparatus, having a yoke, K, in combination with a rest, H, provided with rods to at its extremities, said rods being connected by detachable cords I with the yoke, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a lifting apparatus, a sling having a yoke provided with cords I and 1, in combination with a rest, H, provided with rods a at its extremities, and a central rod, a, substantially as set forth and described.
4. In thclifting apparatus, the strip D, connected with the bedstead at or near the foot, said strip passing under the mattress, as shown,
and having one end connected with shaft S, In testimony whereofI affix inysignature in substantially as and for the purpose set forth. presence of two witnesses.
5. In alifting apparatus forinvalids, in combination with the horizontal shaft operated GEORGE YV. ROBBINS. 5 by means of the hand-Wheel W, one or more slings connected with the shaft and provided Witnesses:
.with yokes having rests detachably secured EDWIN SHAW,
thereto, asherein set forth and described. l EDWARD HIGGINSON.
