Description
Patented Jan. 1, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE XNSECTICIDES Roy Cross, Kansas City, Mo.; Mary Forbes Cross and First National Bank 01' Kansas'City, executors of said Roy Cross, deceased No Drawing. Application April 13, 1945, Serial No. 588,247
(CaH4FCOOH) These are merely representative, DFDT and difiuor diphenyl dichlorethylene being particularly effective.
While the methods of manufacture of many of these fluoro-phenyl products are subject matter of separate inventions, the following is illus- Y trative of typical reactions:
cchcno CCI=CH(CH4F)1 H20 Chloral DFDT As an example, difluorobenzenes may be produced by the reaction of dichlorbenzenes with mercury fluoride or with antimony fluoride, for example:
2 C 5H5 F Fluorbenzene CQH4CI) H8]?! CQH4F: H2012 Orthodichlor- Mercury Orthodifluoro- Mercury benzene fluoride benzene chloride As an illustration of the yields in these and similar reactions in the manufacture of DFDT, 83% of a theoretical yield has been obtained. In the case of DFDT, a solution of to 2% is ordinarily used. This solution may be made up in petroleum naphtha or kerosene and then sprayed for insects. In the case of flies, the number of flies killed is much greater than in the former insecticides of the type of pyrethrum solutions. In each type of insecticide there is an optimum concentration and an optimum condition for use. This is apparent to one skilled in handling insecticides.
I claim:
1. An insecticidal composition of matter comprising the combination of the active ingredient 2 1,1 bis (p-fluorophenyl) 2,2,2 trichlorethane, and a carrier of a petroleum hydrocarbon solvent.
2. An insecticidal composition of matter containing 1,1 bis (p-fiuorophenyl) 2,2,2 trichlorethane as an active ingredient.
3. An insecticidal spray having 1,1 bis (p-fluorophenyl) 2,2,2 trichlorethane therein as an active toxicant.
.4. An insecticidal composition comprising the combination of 1.1 bis (p-fluorophenyl) 2,2,2 trichlorethane as the active ingredient and a carrier miscible therewith.
ROY CROSS.
