(Cl. `AZtl-76) This invention relates to abrading devices and more particularly to rotatable illes or rasps.
An important object of the invention is to provide such an abrading device having .a substantially cylindrical peripheral working face or sura face and a substantially circular working face or vsurface associated therewith.
Another important object is to provide, in a de vice of this kind, a readily detachable cylindrical portion having a continuous peripheral working face, Vand a continuous edge working face and a readily detachable circular portion having a working face 'merging into the edge working .face of the cylindrical portion, whereby a continuous 'working face is provided over the outer periphery and one edge of the cylindrical portion and over one -face of the circular portion for intricate iiling or rasping operations.
Still another important object is to lprovide a rotatable le or rasp, adapted to be power driven, comprising a plurality of portions detachablysecured together, including a cylindrical portion having a working face, and with all portions well secured against accidental displacement due to friction and centrifugal force.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the following detailed description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specication, and in which drawing:
Figure l is a plan view of one face of the assembled abrading device.
Figure 2 is a working face view of a cylindrical portion of the novel device.

In the drawing, similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The novel abrading device includes a xed support portion Ill, a pair of movable support portions II, means I2 slidably securing the portions I I to the portions I0, means I3 for sliding the portions I I toward and away from each other, a cylindrical peripheral portion I4 having a le or rasp surface, means I5 for securing the portion I4 to the portions II, a circular portion I6 also having a file or rasp surface, and means I'I for 2 removably securing 'the portion I to the portions `II.-
Asrrnay be seen,1particularly in Figures 3 and 5, the viixed 'support portion I0 is shown, by way of example, as a disc 2,0 provided with a pair of opposite 'substantially flat faces, an axial opening 2l for a 'shaft or spindle (not shown) and a plurality .of perforations 22 for the reception of parts of the means I2, This disc 20 is of any suitable rigidrnaterial, ias steel.
,Associated with thevdisc '20 are .the pairoi movable support portions II, shown particularly in Figure l landone being Ishown in Figures 3 and v6. Each of the two vsupport portions I I has a substantially semi-circular periphery 25, opposite flat faces 25 ,and Z'I, 'a substantially straight edge 28 joining the periphery 25 and provided with a semi-circular, shaft or spindle receiving recess 29 intermediate its ends, and a plurality of slots 30 for receiving portions 'of the means I2. Extending :from and normal to the lface 26, vat the pe riphery 25 vis aange 3| for abutment, atk its outer face against `an inner face of the circular portion SHI to be subsequentlydescribed. Suitable braces 32 may be provided, extending from the inner face 33 of `the ange 3| to the adjacent portions of .the .face 26. Extending through the flanges 3I are a 'plurality `of spaced apart short slots 34 and, adjacent the .iianges, 'the portions I'I may be provided with a plurality of slots 3de, both for purposes later detailed. 'The support portions II are preferably of rigid metal and each has a greater arc radius than :does the portion Ill so that they project into the plane of the arcuate periphery of the portion I0.
The :support portions I-l are preferably `of rigid metal and the means l2 vfor slidably securing the portions II to the support `portion IEi .may bea plurality of bolts having heads, shank portions extending through 'the slots 3E? and perforations 22, and suitable nuts for tightening the bolts so that, while the portions II may be adjusted toward and away from each other, as is obvious in Figure 1, when so adjusted, they will be held rigidly with respect to the portion I'. Any suitable means may be provided for sliding the portions II toward and away from each other, such as the means I3, shown moreV particularly in Figure 4, comprising spaced-apart lugs 35 extending outwardly of the faces 27 of the' portions II and having screw-threaded shank-receiving bores. Associated with the lugs 35 are contraction and expansion devices each having a wrench-engageable intermediate portion 36 from the opposite ends of which extend screwthreaded shanks 31 one having left-hand screw threads and the other right-hand screw threads, with these shanks 31 extending into the bores of the lugs 35 and the screw-threads thereof in cooperation. Of course, the assembly of portions 36 and shanks 31 bridge the portions I I as in Figure 1 and 4.
The cylindrical peripheral portion I4 of the device shown in Figure 2 as well as in Figures 1 and 3, comprises a metallic ring having an outer periphery provided with a suitable filing or rasping surface 40. This surface also extends over at least one edge of the portion I4. The inner periphery 4| of the portion |4 is adapted to be engaged by the outer faces of the flanges 3| and of course, to be also engaged by the arcuate peripheries of the portions I, as shown in Figure 3.
The portion I4 may be provided with a plurality of spaced-apart perforations 42 having bevelled mouths opening to the surface 40, the bevelled mouths being constructed and arranged to receive the heads of the stove bolts 42 and the perforations 42 to receive the shanks thereof. These Shanks extend through the slots 34 in the flanges 3| and project therefrom so as to receive nuts 43 for detachably coupling the flanges 3| and cylindrical portion I 4 together. The stove bolts and nuts 43 may constitute the means I5.
In Figure l the circular portion IB is shown in plan and, in Figure 8, in section. It comprises a rigid, continuous member with` the outer face thereof provided with a suitable filing or rasping surface 45 and its inner face adapted to engage the outermost parts of the faces 21 of the portions when the surface 45 is substantially flush with the surface 40 of the edge of the portion I4.
Means I'I to secure the circular portion I6 to the portions I I may take any suitable form. The circular portion I5 may be provided with suitable spaced-apart perforations 46 which may have bevelled mouths opening to the surface 45 to receive the shanks of stove bolts 41 with the heads thereof disposed within the bevelled mouths, and the end portions of the shanks extending into the spaced-apart slots- 34a in the portions I I.
The abrading device may be mounted upon a suitable shaft or spindle (not shown) in any approved way, as is well known in the art, for rotation therewith.
From the above, it is now seen that there is provided a continuous filing or rasping surface, with the surface 45 and adjacent parts of the surfaces 4I] substantally normal to the remander of the surface 49 (that is the surface 40 upon the outer periphery of the cylindrical portion I4). Thus, two adjoining suitable surfaces, normal to each other, of a workpiece may be led at the same time, or the peripheral surface employed for filing, or the circular surface used therefor.
Upon removal of the means II the circular portion I6 may be detached from the two portions I I. and upon removal of the means I5 and loosening of the means I2 and manpulation of the means I3, the two movable portions I may be slid, over the face of the fixed support portion I9, toward each other, whereby the cylindrical portion I4 may be removed (for resurfacing or replacement by a new cylindrical portion).
The flanges 3| brace and reinforce the cylindrical portion I4 when in tight engagement therewith and this tight engagement provides frictional contact to prevent shearing of the bolts 42.
Various changes may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claim.
I claim:
In an abrading device, a xed support portion having a substantially flat face, a peripheral edge, and an axial opening, a pair of movable support portions slidable toward and away from each other over said face, each movable support portion having a substantially semi-circular peripheral edge and a semi-circular flange extending from said edge; means slidably securing said movable portions to said xed portion so that the peripheral edge parts of the movable portion will overhang said fixed support portion; means for sliding the removable portions toward and away from each other; a cylindrical peripheral portion having an outer abrasive working face, an edge abrasive working face, and an inner face with said inner face engaging, in a tight-fitting relation, the outer faces of said flanges; means detachably securing said cylindrical peripheral portion to said flanges, a substantially circular portion having an abrasive Working face with said last-named working face extending to and merging into the edge abrasive working face of said cylindrical portion; and means to detachably secure said circular portion to at least one of said movable support portions.
