UNITEDN STATES PATENT EEICE.
sULKY-PLow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,971, dated May 1,6, 1882.
Application filed-March 2, 1882. (No model.)
Toollwhomftmay concern: Be it known that I, JACOB NIKON, of Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows; and I dohereby declare the following to be a ftlllpclear, and
exact description of the invention, suelra's will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to sulky-plows; and its object is to improve the construction of this class of plows, whereby the point of resistance tothe'draft may be brought close to the team and a direct draft obtained from the shoulder of the team to the center of the draft.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sulky-plow with an extended standard and suitable operating-levers and connecting parts, whereby the maximum leverage may be obtained in adjusting and regulating the plow, thus lessening the labor of the driver.
A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the braces, operating-levers, and connecting parts of the plow, whereby complication may be avoided andthe Amanufacture and use of the plow facilitated.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointedout in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a `perspective view of a sulky-plow constructed in accord-` ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with thefurrow-wheel removed. Iiig. 3 is a detached view of the axle of the plow. Fig. 4. is a similar view of the land-lever." lFig. 5 is a reverse plan viewof the plow, and Fig. Gis a detached view ofthe draft-frame and its supporting-bracket.
. A represents the axle of the plow, consisting of thediagonal main portion a and the horizontal arms a a2, the latter being arranged parallelwith eachother at opposite ends of the Vdiagonal portion u..
At a central point on the axle A is secured in any suitable manner the seat-support B, carrying a drivers seat, B.
At about the center of the axle-arm u' is rigidly secured the rear end of the plow-tongue (l by a bolt, c, or iny any other suitable manner. The outer end of the axle-arm u' is provided with a spindle, a3, to receive the furrow-wheel X, and upon the inner end of thespindle is pro vided an annular shoulder, a4, for a purpose hereinafter described.
V-shaped bracket, c', to the inner sideof the mold-board. l The inner side of the standard Iis provided with a guide-loop, G, secured at its upper end to the standard, a little below the upper extremity of the latter, and at its lower end at a point. a little below the center of the standard. VThis guide G embraces the plow-tongue C, and is adapted to be guided on said beam when theplow is raised and lowered.
Upon the outer side of the standard, and at a point preferably about one-third of the length of the saine from its upper eud,is provided a stud or projection, H, adapted to engage with a hook or stop, H', secured lo the outer side of the plow-tongue, adjacent to the standard, and
adapted to limit the downward movement of the latter.
To the upper end ofthe standard F is pivoted one end of a lever, I, the opposite end of'which is fulerumed on the spindle ai of the axle.
The standard is also provided with a toggleconnection, J, the forward arm,j, of which is pivoted at its frontend to the standard, at about the eenterof the latter, and at its rear` end `to the forward end ofthe rear arm,j, of-'the togupper end ,of the link ji' lis pivoted by a pivot, j, to the forward end of the bellerank lever K, the pivotal point or fulcrum of the latter AIoo . S5 D representsthemold-hoard of theplow, and
being in a bracket, L, secured upon the top of theplowtongue, nearits rear end. Thisbracket L consists ofa horizontal portion, Z, adapted to be secured to the tongue C by screws or bolts,
5 the outer upturned side, l', and the inner vertical side, Z2, which is notched to constitute the holding-sector of the plow. Between the sides of this bracket L is fulcrumed the handle M of the lever K by a pivot, m, which also serves to ro secure the handle to the lever. Said handle is also secured to the lever K by one or more bolts orscrews, 7c, above its pivotal point. Upon the inner sideof the handle M is arranged the usual hand-lever, N, and connecting-rod and dog to engage the teethof the sector Z2.
The draft-frame ofthe plow preferably consists of a strip of metal bent to form an outer side, P, the forward cross-brace, P', and ears P2, and the inner curved or semicircular side, P3. The rear ends of the sides P and P3 are pivoted, one on either side ofthe standard F, by'a pivot, p, which also secures the armj of the toggle-connection to the standard, said arm j being held between the standard and arm P ofthe draft-frame. The inner curved side, P3,
of the draft-frame admits ofthe attachment of a rolling colter to the plow-tongue, the curvature of said side being such that a colter would not be obstructed or come in contact with the frame.
QQ represent depending arms, pivoted on either side of the tongue C, adjacent to the draft frame, by a bolt, '(1. These arms are adapted to be pivotally secured at their lower ends between the ears P2 of the draftframe by a rod or bolt, It, to support said frame, and upon the rod It is pivoted a clevis, S, by its perforated ears s. The clevis supports by a bolt, T, the coupling T', to which the team is attached.
forward end to the beam C at a point in rear of the arms Q Q', and at its opposite end to the arm c2 of the axle. -Upon the outer end of the axle-arm o2 is rigidly mounted a land-sector, V, and the said arm is internally threaded to receive a screw-pivot, fu, of thc bell-crank lever W, the short arm of which is provided with a spindle, lw, upon which is mounted the landwheelX. The inner side of the lever is provided with a hand-lever,Y,pivoted tothe landlever, and provided with a rod, y, which is guided in a perforated lug, 1', of the lever W, and terminates in a dog, y2, adapted to engage theftecthof the sector V.
By the construction of plow as thus de scribed a direct draft is secured from the plowstandard. 'The plow may be readily drawn backward out of the ground by forcing the lifting-lever backward; and the depth ot' the furrow and the Working position of the plow are regulated by the lever W, to which the land-wheel X is secured.
By the peculiar construction of axle above described the furrow-wheel is adapted to fol `M2 represents a diagonal brace, secured at its low the plow in the furrow, while the land-- wheel is projected forward and, with the weight ofthe driver, takes all weight from the shoulders of the team and evenly balances the plow.
It will be apparent that many slight changes 7o in the construction of the plow may be made without departing from my invention; and hence,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with the tongue provided on one side with a hook or stop, of the plow provided with an extended standard, having on one side a loop-guide, 8o through which the tongue passes, and on its opposite side a stud or projection adapted to engage with the slop on the tongue, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the axle, plowtongue, and extended standard, of the lever I', pivoted at one end to the axle, and at its opposite end to the upper end of the standard, a lifting-lever, and suitable connections for raising and retracting the plow, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the axle, plowtongue, and plow, the latter being provided with an extended standard, of the lever I, pivotcd at one end to the upper extremity of the standard and at its opposite end to the axle, thcvlil'ting-lever, and a toggle-connection provided with a stop, and pivoted at its rear end to the axle and at its forward end to the standard ata point above the mold-board of the plow, substantially as set forth.
4. In asulky-plow,the combination, with the standard and its toggle-connection J, of the d rait-frame, substantially as shown, pivoted to the standard at its rear end, while its forward end is suspended loosely from the tongue and adapted to receive the coupling for the team, substantially as set forth.
5. In a`sulky-plow, the combination, with the plow-tongue and.vertically-moving standard, of the draft-frame pivoted at its rear end to the standard above the mold-board, while its opposite end is supported between swinging arms dependingl'rom the tongue, and provided with means for lateral draft adjustments, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the plow-tongue, of a' bracket adapted to be secured'thereto, and provided with upwardly-projecting sides to receive the liftinglever, the inner one of said sides being notched to form the holding-sector of the plow, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing v witnesses.
