Description
Dec. 18, 1951 5 l. KALDOR 2,579,190
' GARTER BELT Filed April fr. 1947 ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED `STATS GARTER BELT Irving Kaldor, San Francisco, Calif.
y Application April 7, 1947, Serial No. 739,825
The invention, in general, relates to feminine undergarments and more particularly relates to an improved garter belt affording support'for the abdomen and hips without likelihoodY of chang the skin.
Heretofore in the art, numerous types and styles lof garter belts have been devised ranging from the single strip for encircling the waist and having depending elastics with garter buckles, to the wider, girdle-like elastic bands. Many of these prior constructed garter belts are disadvantageous not only fromthe annoyance and discomfort standpoint but also because of their inability to remain in position on the body of the wearer in that they become folded or otherwise displaced during use particularly in walking. Other disadvantages, such as expensveness and inconvenience of manufacture, have rendered many of these prior garments undesirable and unsalable.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved garter belt affording a snug i-lt about the hips and abdomen for retaining the natural contours of the body, and affording retention of hose in place at all times.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved garter belt of the indicated nature which is additionally characterized by a construction which avoids all likelihood of chang of the skin, and which affords a soft comfortable garment admirably suited for close contact with the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved garter belt of the aforementioned character which is relatively simple to assemble and produce, bringing manufacturing costs to a minimum.
Other objects of the invention, together with some of the advantageous features thereof, will appear from the following description of a preferred and a modified embodiment of the invention which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the precise embodiments shown, nor to the precise arrangement of the various parts thereof, as my invention, as defined in the appended claims, can be embodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention, as viewed from the front thereof. V
Figure 2 is another perspective View of the preferred embodiment of the invention, as viewed from the back thereof.
rem, Y oFFIcE] f Figure 3 is a perspective view of a modified ernbodiment of the invention, as viewed from the front thereof.
In its preferred form, the improved garter belt sheets of cloth II which partially encircles the.
body about the hips of the wearer and which have their front side edges preferably cut on a bias as specifically depicted in Figure 1 of the drawings; each of such sheets II preferably being extended at the back of the garment from their bottom edges and on the rear portions thereof to afford cloth extensions I2 and I3 which t the backs of the thighs of the wearer. At the back of the cloth sheets II, I provide a joiner strip I4 of elastic webbing which is detachably connected centrally of its side edges, conveniently by means of hooks and eyes, and which is connected to the cloth sheets by attaching the side edges of the joiner web to the rear edges of the sheets. As shown, the belt is provided with a pair of elastic strips I6 and Il depending from the portions I2 and I3 of the sheet with garter buckles and tabs 3| fastened to the lower extremities of such elastic strips.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a piece or width of relatively soft material, preferably lace, for joining the front side edges of the cloth sheets Il to complete the belt for entirely encircling the body at approximately the waistline. The width or piece of soft material is designated generally by the reference numeral 2l in the annexed drawings and it is preferably cut to the shape depicted to afford two slanting portions 22 and 23 at the sides thereof and generally conforms to the shape of the abdomen at the sides of the body. The piece of lace 2I conveniently is stitched to the front side edges of the cloth sheets II and, to reinforce the same at the top, I provide and attach by means of stitching a fiat strip of tape 24 across the inside top of the lace insert. Moreover, a pair of spaced tapes 26 and 2l are sewn vertically from top to bottom of the lace piece 2| to reinforce the same in a vertical direction. However, in order to insure that no chang of the skin can occur by the rubbing` action of the garment at the abdomen or thighs, the edges of the lace piece 2| are left unselvedged and there is thus presented to the skin a yielding soft garment portion. To complete the belt, I provide a pair of elastics 28 and 29 at the front thereof and preferably extending from the tapes 26 and 21, each of which elastic strips carry a hose clasp 3| for supporting hose.
In view of the provision of the short elastic webbing I4 at the back of the garment, it is clear that the belt of my present improvement adjustably fits the body and permits of some expansion during the use thereof. Moreover, the soft material such as the lace piece 2| at the front of the improved belt affords a garment that is yielding at the front and which does not chafe the skin or otherwise render the skin sore from the normal rubbing action of the garment on the skin during walking. It is to be understood, of course, that the elastic strips I6, 28 and 29 which all carry hose clasps 3| also are provided with adjusting links for shortening or lengthening such strips to accommodate Various sizes of persons.
In Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a modified embodiment of the present invention which is in all respects similar to the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 except that the cloth sheets Il are replaced by elastic webbing I9 and the joiner web insert I4 of the preferred embodiment is dispensed with since the elastic webbing I will take care of required expansion and adjustment to the body.
It is to be understood that the appended claim is to be accorded a range of equivalents commensurate in scope with the advance made over the prior art.
I claim:
A garter belt comprising a pair of cloth sheets; said sheets being adapted partially to encircle the body about the hips of the wearer, a cloth extension integral with each sheet of said'pair of sheets and depending from the bottom edges of each of said pair of sheets at the rear thereof; said extensions being adapted to overlie the rears of the thighs of the wearer, a joiner web strip detachably connected together centrally of its side edges and connected at its side edges to the rear side edges of said cloth sheets; said joiner web strip being adapted to be disposed at the back of the wearer, a continuous unobstructed lace sheet attached at its side edges to the front side edges of said cloth sheets; said lace sheet having slanting portions at the sides thereof and being adapted to overlie the abdomen of the wearer, elastic strips connected to and depending from said cloth extensions, a pair of reinforced tapes attached to said lace sheet in spaced relationship and extending from the top edge to the bottom edge of said lace sheet; elastic strips connected to and depending from said tapes and hose clasps on all of said elastic strips for supporting hose on the belt.
