Dec. 18, 1951 V. J- DE YOUNG ADJUSTABLE BISECTIONAL BACK REST Filed Sept. 15, 1945 IN V EN TOR.
j Var/7e Jack De You/77 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES OFFICE ADJUSTABLE BISECIIONAL BACK REST Application September 15, 1945, Serial No. 616,588
4 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a posture chair in which the back is adjustable to the individual using the chair comprising a pair of back members which are adjustable horizontally and these back members being supported for vertical adjustment as a unit and from front to rear relative to the seat.
Second, to provide a posture chair which supports the body of the user of the chair in a manner well adapted to relieve strains and minimize fatigue.
Third, to provide a structure having these ad vantages which is simple and economical in its parts and easily adjusted for particular requirements.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a chair embodying my invention, a figure being conventionally illustrated thereon.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on line 44 of Fig. 3 showing details of the mounting of the back members.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on line 55 of Fig. 1.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a pedestal designated generally by the numeral I, the chair seat 2 being supported by the swivel supporting spindle 3. This spindle is adapted for vertical adjustment but as that forms no part of my present invention it is not described herein.
The spindle is provided with a rearwardly projecting bracket 4 to which the rearwardly curved back bar 5 is connected by means of the arm 6. 'The arm 6 is adjustably connected to the bracket at 1 while the back bar is adjustably connected to the arm 5 at 8. This adjustment comprises a clamping head 9 on the arm 6 and a coacting clamp member H) with clamping screw l l. The connection for the arm to the bracket is desirably the same as that illustrated in Fig. 5 and therefore is not detailed.
The adjustable arm 5 and the adjustable connection for the back bar 5 to the arm 6 permits the vertical adjustment of the back bar and also tilting adjustment of the back bar-- that is, adjustment of the back bar forwardly and rearwardly relative to the seat.
The back bar is provided with forwardly inclined cross arms l2 at its upper end and padded back members [3 are mounted on these arms for longitudinal adjustment thereon and also for tilting adjustment, this being accomplished by the clamps l4 embracing the cross arms l2, the clamp being split and provided with clamping screws l5, see Fig. 4.
By this arrangement of parts the back mem bers can be adjusted to properly fit the body of the user and to engage the users back at a point most comfortable to the user both vertically and also to conform to the particular user.
The adjustment of the back members to and from each other is designed to accommodate persons of different size as well as difierent body shapes. The tilting also enters into this.
I have illustrated and described a highly practical embodiment of my invention. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other embodiments and adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody and adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a posture chair, the combination with a non-tiltable seat provided with a swiveled supporting spindle, of a back supporting bracket projecting rearwardly from said spindle below said seat, a rearwardly curved back bar, a supporting arm for said back bar adjustably connected to the lower end thereof and adjustably connected to said bracket whereby the back bar is supported for vertical and for front to rear adjustment, said back bar having a pair of laterally projecting cross arms at its upper end, a pair of padded back engaging members mounted on said arms for adjustment longitudinall thereof and for tilting adjustment thereon, said arms being inclined forwardly to conform approximately to the horizontal curvature of the back at the waist line, said arms constituting guide- Ways for adjusting the back engaging members forwardly as the same are adjusted outwardly on said arms, and means for adjustably securing the back engaging members to the arms.
2. In a posture chair, the combination with a seat, of a back bar having opposed laterally projecting cross arms at its upper end, individual back engaging members mounted on said arms for independent adjustment longitudinally thereof and for independent tilting adjustment thereon, said arms being inclined forwardl to conform approximately to the horizontal curvature of the back at the waist line, said arms constituting guideways for adjusting the back engaging members forwardly as the same are adjusted outwardly on said arms, and means for adjustably securing the back engaging members to the arms.
3. In a posture chair, the combination with a seat, of a back bar having opposed laterally pro jecting forwardly inclined cross guideways at its upper end, back engaging members supported by said guideways for adjustment longitudinally thereof and for vertical tiltable adjustment relative thereto, said guideways guiding the back engaging members forwardly as the same are adjusted outwardly thereof, the longitudinal line of adjustment of the back engaging members relative to the guideways corresponding approximately to the horizontal line of curvature of the back at the waist line, and means for holding the back engaging members in their positions of adjustment relative to the guideways.
4. In a posture chair, the combination with a seat, of a chair back having laterally projecting cross arms, back engaging members each having a single pivotal connection on said arms for horizontal and tilting adjustment thereon, said arms being inclined forwardly to conform approximately to the horizontal curvature of the back at the waist line, said arms constituting guideways for adjusting the back engaging members forwardly as the same are adjusted outwardly on said arms, and means for adjustably securing the back engaging members to the arms.
