UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLARD GOMEY, OF WESTBOROUGH, ASSIGNOR TO THE IMPROVED SOLE SEVING MACHINE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,849, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed August 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLARD GoMEY, of Westborough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Shoe, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part hereof, in which- Figure -1 shows a side view of a shoe, partly in section, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a shoe made after my invention, but not wholly finished.
My invention relates to securing the upper to the sole,'or to that part of the manufacture 1 of shoes and-boots commonly called bottoming; and it consists in a boot or shoein which the upper is inserted between an inner and an outer sole, both of which are channeled, the inner sole being channeled on the grain side, or that side which comes next the foot, and 'the outer sole being also channeled on the grain side, or that side which is outermost in the finished shoe, a line of stitches passing through both the soles and that part of the upper between them and from the bottom of the channel in the outer sole to the bottom of the chanel in the inner sole, so that the threads are covered by the channel-lip of the inner sole inside the shoe and outside the shoe by the 0 channellip of the outer sole.
In the drawings, A is the upper; B, the inner sole, and D the outer sole. The inner sole is channeled, and the lip b of the channel is folded back, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that it may be out of the way. The inner sole is 5 then applied to the last and the shoe lastedin the usual way, when the channeled outer sole is put in place, the lip d of its channel being also folded back. The shoe is then sewed, care being taken to have the threads on the inner 40 and outer surface line in the channels of the inner and outer soles, as shown in the drawings. The channel-lips b and d are then cemented down, as in Fig. 1, and the shoe heeled and finished.
What I claim as my invention is- The improved sewed shoe above described, having both its inner and its outer soles channeled, and stitches extending through both the inner and outer soles and the upper, and
covered on the inside of the sole by the lip of the channel of the inner sole and on the outside of the sole by the lip of the channel of the outer sole,'as shown.
WILLARD GO'MEY.
