Also, since the drums I8 and 29 are spaced from each other the cutting blade 32 will have a portion between the drums which Ywill form a straight line which will hereinafter be referred to as the path of the blade.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the arm 24 is adapted to be moved` about its pivot on the bracket I by a toggle mechanism to lower the drum 29 to facilitate replacement of the cutting blade. This may be accomplished by moving the hand lever 33 which is secured to the .shaft` 34 journalled in a bracket 35 secured to the beam I4. The arm 36, also secured to the shaft 34, is pivoted at 31 to the lower end of the lever 38 which is pivoted at 39 to the end 25 of the Y arm 24. The upper end of the lever 38 is bifurcated to fit over a stud 4u projecting vfrom a rod 4I guided in a. bore 42 in the arm 24 and l in a bore 43 formed in an ear extending from the slide 26.
The nuts 44 threaded tothe rod 4I act to move the slide 26 rearwardly as the l arm 24 is lowered so as to relieve the tension of the cutting blade. After replacement of a cutting blade, the hand lever is moved rearwardly until the stop screw 45 strikes against the base of the bracket 35 and the spring 46 is compressed by the collar 41 on the rod 4I and serves to move the slide 26 to again ten-Y ber 55 is secured to a slide'block 51 which is held by the gib plates 58 in a slot 59 formed in the bracket 60.
The height of the table 52 may be adjusted by turning the stud 6| one end of which is right hand screw threaded into a boss formed on theu slide block 51 and the other end left hand screwY threaded into the lug 62 formed on the bracket The sole support 63, shown in detail in Fig. 7,
- is provided with spaced holes 64 which slide over the studs 65 screw threaded to the table 52 and locked in position by the nuts 66. The springs 61 serve to bias the sole support upwardly away from the cutting blade 32 and the knurled nuts 68 may be used to adjust the heightV of the sole support to vary the distance between its sole contacting face 69 and the cutting blade.
The sole edge guide rolls and 'II are held to the sole support by the shoulder screws 12 and, as best shown in Fig. 8, the roll 10 is located on the cutting edge side of the blade 32 While the roll 'II is located on the other side of the blade and spaced forwardly of the roll 19. This spacing of the guide rolls defines a line of feed which is oblique to the path of the cutting blade.
Feeding of a sole past the cutting blade is accomplished by the feed screw which is secured by the set screw 16 toa shaft 'I1 journalled in the bracket 18 which is pivoted at 19A to the table 52. The bracket is biased upwardly by the spring 80 which iscompressed 1 by the screw 8l threaded into a bar 82 atand the sole support face 69 the screw 83 threaded into the bracket 'I8 is provided with a head portion which contacts the underside of the table and acts as a stop to limit movement of the feed screw towards the sole support.
The feed screw shaft 11 is adapted to be constantly rotated in a clockwise direction, as
vviewed in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, by the belt 84 driven by an electric motor 85 indicated in Fig. 2.
The thread on the feed screw is left hand and of a shape which allows it to penetrate the I screw is driven in a clockwise direction it tends to force the edge of the sole into contact with the guide rolls 'I9 and 1I as it feeds it past the cutting blade.
vAlso, as shown in Fig. 6, the feed screw is -tapered so that its end farthest away from the cutting blade is of smaller diameter so as to provide a bite between it and the sole support face 69 to allow easy entrance of a sole.
' The table 52 and the sole support 63 are maintained at an angle with respect to the path of the cutting blade and preferably this angle corresponds to the desired angle to be cut on the shank portion of the soles being treated. To
vary the angle, for cutting or reducing the forepart of the soles, a treadle 86 pivoted at 81 to the frame I0 is connected by the rod 88 to the table 52 in the manner shown in Fig. 2. Thespring 89 located between the beam I3 and the collar is pivotably mounted by the pin 56. The mem-.,
' position.
To remove the leather dust'created during operation ofthe machine the duct 95 indicated in Fig. 2 may be connected to the usual factory blower system.
In operation of the machine described a sole S is placed flesh side down upon the table 52 and its heel end is inserted under the sole support 63 into the bite between the sole contacting surface 69 and the feed-screw 15 substantially as shown in the position marked Start in Fig. 9; The feed screw thread then engages with the sole surface and urges the sole inwardly towards the guide rolls 10 and 1I as it positively advances the marginal edge of the sole past the cutting blade 32 which removes material from vthe sole in the form of a bevelled rand or skivturning of the sole to effect a continuous cut from the heel end at one side of the sole to the heel end at the other side of the sole, or entirely around the sole, is automatic and of course the operator guides the sole out of the machine when it reaches the position marked Finish in Fig. 9.
