Application June 2, 1945, Serial No. 597,196
l The present invention relates to display cabinets and more particularly to display cabinets for displaying hats or the like. i
The primary objects of the instant inventio are to provide a cabinet of the general character above indicated whereby merchandise on display therein may be readily and conveniently removed by a sales person therefrom for inspection and examination by a prospective purchaser; to provide such a cabinet which is relatively dust proof; to provide such a cabinet which is attractive in appearance; to provide such a cabinet which is efficient for the purposes of its intended use; and, to provide such a cabinet which is reasonably economical in manu facture and in installation.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the cabinet, a portion thereof being broken away;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of a top forward corner portion of the cabinet;
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the cabinet; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal fragmentary sectional view of the cabinet showing the floor of the base thereof and the manner in which any of the several elongated vertically disposed doors may be individually selectively outwardly opened to remove displayed merchandise therefrom.
Referring then to the drawings wherein like parts of the structure shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, the cabinet there shown is provided with a base I0, spaced side walls ll, I2, a rear wall 13, top 14 and a plurality of glass framed doors l outwardly manually swingable.
A plurality of vertically spaced horizontally disposed racks 16 here shown as corrugated in form and particularly well adapted for the display of hats I7, are each secured at their outer ends to the inner surface of each of the oppositely spaced side walls ll, l2.
The upper surface of the floor of the base In of the cabinet and the under surface of the top thereof are each provided with a series of spaced wells 18, each well of a series in the 2 Claims. (01. 20-16) shaped brackets 20, one of each pair being secured adjacent the upper end of the door along one length thereof and the other secured adjacent the lower end of the door along the same length thereof, the free end of each bracket being provided with a laterally disposed pin 2| seated within a well Hi, all as best shown in Figures 2-4.
The opposite lengths of each door are here shown as provided with bevelled edges 22, 23, each acting as a cammed surface cooperating with the complementary cammed surface of the adjacent door and a helical contraction spring 24 secured at one end to a stud 25 vertically projecting from the floor of the base Ill and secured at its other end to a stud 26 projecting vertically from the free end of the bracket 20, serve to normally maintain each door closed against a vertically projecting stop 21 mounted on the floor of the base I0 of the cabinet, all as best shown in Figure 3.
In instances wherein it is desired to remove merchandise displayed rearwardly of any given door, as for example merchandise on display within the cabinet rearwardly of the first door, the sales person grasps the handle [9 and swings the door outwardly to its position shown in Figure 1 which causes the second door to be partially opened and the third and fourth doors to be progressively opened to a lesser degree because of the camming action between the bevelled edges of the several adiacent doors and which first door when fully opened is retained in opened position until manually closed, which retention of the door in opened position is ef fected by the action of the helical contraction spring when thrown past center.
The second, third or fourth doors may obviously likewise be selectively opened and similarly retained in opened position and since the several doors are mounted in the manner above described, merchandise on display within the cabinet may be readily and conveniently removed by a sales person therefrom for the inspection and examination of a prospective purchaser.
It will thus be seen the cabinet herein illustrated and described is relatively dust proof, is attractive in appearance, is efficient in its intended use and is reasonably economical in manufacture and installation, and while but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described. it will be understood that certain details of the constructiorishown may be altered or omitted without departing from the the same is defined by sides of the axis of movement of the doors for the inner surfaces of the doors, the vertical edges of adjacent. doors having complementaryrbevelled meeting edges in planes extending rearwardly and outwardly from the front surfaces of the doors, the contiguous bevelled edges of the doors having a camming action on each other to limitedly open the doors successively by movement of the end door and cause movement of each when the end door is opened.
V 2. A cabinet of the class described having a plurality of linear vertically disposed outwardly swingable doors each pivotally hung adjacent a vertical len th thereof between the ,top and floor of the cabinet in ..a line disposed rearwardly of the inner surfaces of the doors, the vertical edges of adjacent doors having complementary bevelled meeting edges in 'planes, extending rearwardly 4 and outwardly from the front surfaces of the doors, the contiguous bevelled edges of the doors having a camming action on each other to limitedly open the doors successively by movement of the end door and cause movement of each when the end door is opened, and spring means connected to the doors and movable to opposite maintaining a selected door in opened or closed position.
