This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hackamores, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient, expeditious and highly efficient training of horses, particularly, breaking in of colts, as well as to effectively control horses in games such as polo, or the like.

Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient operation without causing injury to the animal, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the invention in use;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention per se, with the nose band covering removed; and,

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional detail, taken substantially along the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings and detail, the invention consists of a hackamore which is designated generally by the reference character It] and embodies in its construction a flexible nose band 12 which preferably assumes the form of stranded wire, the nose band having free end portions which are transversely spaced and provided with a pair of relatively large lugs l4 connected together by a transverse pivot pin I6.

A double arm lever B is swingably mounted on this pin and has one arm 20 thereof pivotally connected to a fork 22 of a link 24, which is achieved by passing an eye 26 through the fork and through the arm 20, as best shown in Figure 2.

The remaining end of the link 24 is provided with a transversely elongated eye 28 which slidably embraces end portions from the nose band l2 so that when the lever I8 is swung in the direction of the arrow 30, the eye 28 slides forwardly and contracts the nose band, as indicated by the dotted lines 32.

The nose band [2 is provided with suitable coverings 34, 36 so as to prevent injury to the animal, and a pair of loops 38 are provided intermediately of the nose band for attachment thereof to cheek straps 40 of a harness.

The aforementioned loop 26 is suspended by a rope 42, or the like, from a neck piece 44, and the second arm 46 of the aforementioned lever I8 is provided with an eye 48 for connection to suitable rein 50.

When th invention is placed in use, rearward pulling on the reins will cause the lever l8 to swing in the direction of the arrows 30, thus contracting the nose band l2 and exerting a clamping pressure on the nose and mouth regions of the animal so as to effectively control and restrain the same.

In order to prevent the nose band l2 from being contracted to an excess, a stop detent 52 is provided at the upper end of the arm 20 of the lever I8, this detent being adapted to abut the fork 22 when the link 24 is slid forwardly to the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 2.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the. spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a hackamore, the combination of a flexible nose band having spaced free end portions, a double arm lever pivotally mounted between the free end portions of said nose band, a link pivoted to one arm of said lever and having an eye slidable on the nose band for contracting the same, and a control rein connected to the other arm of said lever.

2. In a hackamore, the combination of a flexible nose band having spaced free ends, a pair of transversely spaced lugs provided at the free ends of said nose band, a pivot pin extending transversely between said lugs, a double arm lever mounted on said pin, a, link provided at one end thereof with a fork pivotally connected to one arm of said lever, a transversely elongated eye provided at the other end of said link and slidably embracing end portions of the nose band for contracting the same, and a control rein connected to the other arm of said lever.

3. The device as defined in claim 2 together 3 with a stop detent provided on the first mentioned arm of said lever and adapted to abut said fork, whereby to limit the contracting sliding movement of said eye on said nose band.
